New AMD CPUs still have to demonstrate they are better in single threaded performance. In the previous generation Intel was better: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gJmnz_nVxI6_dG_UYNCCpZVK2-f8NBy-y1gia77Hu_k

That is true.

We know YouTube hypes these and tells you something different, but remember: Only believe hard, actual facts.

I am hoping the new AMD top-of-the-line can finally compete in single core performance - under avx instructions and with a steady, *never throttling once*, boost. But I'm not getting my hopes up, not a horse I'd bet on.

I wanna know what sort of cooling you're using to keep your chip at 5+Ghz constant with an AVX offset of 0 :)

But you're right, we don't know if the new Ryzen's can hold 4.8+ indefinitely on a single thread, iirc they shuffle to keep thermals in check on that core. Then again doesn't Intel have a 56sec lock on max boost?

I have my 9900k running  5.2 GHz on all 8 cores with 0 AVX offset, using a Corsair H150i Pro AIO cooler.

Not if you know the motherboard BIOS. Just set the limits really high and the chip stays at max boost max power draw.

My chip is an 8086K @ 5.1ghz, hyper-threading off, something like 1.38v CPU vcore, RAM at 3800mhz 1.4v. The CPU is cooled by a fairly modest Noctua air cooler, the NH-U14S (needed a smaller one for RAM compatibility). My secret is that I delidded the CPU and replaced the crappy thermal paste with liquid metal, which got be about a 15C temperature reduction.

But yeah. Get a 9000 or 10000-series Intel with the soldered TIM and a 240/280/360mm AIO and you'll be fine at 5.0 or 5.1ghz.

Reverb G2 starting to ship soon according to HP rep on r/HPReverb.

Final production units are on their way. Looks like they're remaining fairly close to the recently announced timeline of early/mid November for the first batch of pre-orders.

Exciting times!

Is anyone volunteering to get a Zen3 5800X so we can benchmark it against the Intel line-up in IL-2?

I'm thinking 5900x next week if that'll do?

Sorry if the answer is buried in previous pages, but what PC spec is likely to be necessary for decent performance in IL2 GB and Reverb G2.  I run a PC with

CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700 CPU @ 3.20GHz

GPU: GeForce RTX 2070

Memory: 16 GB RAM (15.88 GB RAM usable)

SSD+HDD

Would you purchase a Reverb G2 in confidence with this spec?  Or would I be better with the Rift S (until I have upgraded my PC in a few years).

Grateful for thoughts/comments

The problem with the 8700 (non-K) chip is that it's a bit too slow for good VR frame rates. You need to hit 90 FPS for the Reverb G2, 80 FPS for the Rift S (and Valve Index). You're also a little too slow with the RTX 2070, even for the Rift S, and definitely too slow for the G2. RAM speed is also a factor, you want at least 3200 Mhz or better. With your current setup I think you can reliably hit half-framerate mode, (40 FPS doubled to 80, or 45 doubled to 90).

With the frame doubling mode you're going to see "ghosting" on planes that are moving rapidly past your field of view, such as in a dogfight. For some players they don't mind the ghosting, for some players (like me) they can't stand it. So I reduce my settings a lot in order to try to hit the full frame rate.

You might be able to buy or borrow a Rift S to test it out on your rig. If you don't like the frame doubling mode, you can return it (depends on the retailer -- check their policy).

I would 100% recommend VR but for IL2 (and the other flight sim) you need a very powerful rig to hit full frame rate. I was playing the other sim at 60 FPS doubled to 120, though, and it looked fine to me. The ghosting is more of a factor for up-close WW2 knife fights.

3.2GHz is the base clock, but if you activate the TurboBoost option at BIOS you could run at 4.6GHz which is much better, but still maybe not enough for full 80 or 90 fps (depending on settings). To mantain the 4.6 GHz you will need to mantain the CPU temp below certain limit. What CPU cooler do you have?

You can consider to buy a 8700K (2nd hand o perhaps new) or 9700K. And resell your 8700.  This is what I did when I upgraded from my old 4790 to my current 4790K.

You need to know also what is your RAM speed. Install CPU-Z an provide a screenshoot of the memory tab.

For GPU your 2070 would be quite OK for RiftS and similar devices. For Higher res devices you should upgrade. The beauty thing is that we have plently of new options for GPU at very good prices.

Update on the Shipping situation through bestware / Germany:

So VR is dead, eh, just a passing fad.  Think HP just marked the consensus wrong, people will shell out in a big way in numbers, but the hardware has to be good.

Is there a dummie's guide to configure and use the Reverb with IL2 (assuming the G1 and G2 will be similar)? Written for someone without any VR background at all.

@SCG_Fenris_Wolf has a WMR/G1 section in his help page here:

I just got an e-mail from bestware. It seems there is a one week delay compared to the information above. The first batch will reach them next week which is week 47 instead of week 46 which would be this week.

To be fair their reddit page is more transparent then 99% of the 3080 / 3090 retailers keeping their customers in the dark...

Beginning to look like those of us in the states are going to be bringing up the rear on this one.

I believe this 13 % is just for this one retailer. Others may be able to send out more of their orders with their 1st batch.

Noticed this morning a pending charge on my credit card account for the Reverb G2.

Logged onto Connection and it has a tracking numbers, says pending shipment. UPS 2nd day air, so maybe I will get either Sat. or Mon.

Thanks.

Going to be interesting, see how much faffing about with WMR I will have to do.

The question I will be curious about, is whether I will want to officially retire the Rift S or not.

The answer to that will probably depend on the controller tracking on the Reverb G2.

One thing I have always loved about my Rift S, is no muss no fuss at all, just plug in and play.

Huh. How about that. Tracking says mine should arrive tomorrow. I had no idea.

You should be able to get some good info on the Radeon cards releasing later this month.

Should be heavy contendors.
