Thought I'd give this elegant beast a go. Weird Russian ILS takes some getting used to, and keeping the speed stable is tricky. Having to fly in through a thick plume of smoke is rather distracting, though apparently entirely authentic. ?

Not an elegant landing. Steep, and misaligned. No LSO-bot to tell me how bad I was though, for now at least. If they add one, will he grade me in Russian?

Some TOMCAT fun (has to be said TOMCAT, not Tomcat, see C. W. Lemoine's channel for explanation, lol). Me vs 4 Mig 25's,

And then some low level dicking around cause its a lot of fun....

Further misadventures in marine aviation...

Harrier time. Trying to learn how to land the thing on a ship. Seemed better to practice on a CVN, since it gives a little more room. My first attempt was more of a collision than a landing, though it taught me one useful lesson - if you come down hard enough, you will bounce, giving the opportunity to try again a second or so later. ?

My second sortie was educational too. Can you see what is wrong in these photos?

I'd given myself plenty of room and (fortunately) altitude to establish myself in a stable approach. Which worked well enough up to a point. And then this happened. I expect experienced Harrier pilots will spot the mistake. It took me some time, and some wild manoeuvres, before I figured it out what I'd done. It started as I slowed down,  well behind the ship. Or thought I had. Strangely though, the CV seemed to be going away from me rather fast.  The HUD said I was doing 30 kt. The wind over deck was 20 kt. The carrier was moving away at 50 kt...

Yup, that's right, I was going backwards. Which a Harrier will do, if you move the nozzles back all the way. ? Or at least, it will for a bit. Eventually though, aerodynamics will overcome idiocy as you accelerate backwards, and it will try to flip round to point into the direction it is moving. And perform all sorts of wild gyrations as it does so. Hence me ending up 80° nose down, at 470 ft, descending at 900 fpm and 20 kt, with the HUD reading an AoA of 'your guess is as good as mine'. Somehow I managed to recover, only to go thorough the same gyrations again before I finally realised what was happening. And more to the point, why.

Having twigged the problem, I moved the nozzles forward to the approved 82° position, ? confirmed that I was (more or less) in control in a hover, and set off after the carrier. The actual landing was as gentle as I've managed in the Harrier so far, though the LSO seemed to be rather upset that I wasn't using any of the fancy wire things they've got draped across the deck. ?

You're a wee bit steep on your angle, back off just a hair and you're in like Flint.

Due to no flying for a month. I cooled off the interest a bit. I imagine Harrier time will get me into it again. Long tome have passed since I sat in that pit. Nice maneuvers Andy. I envy your persistence

I bought the 109, it had to happen. I wanted a German prop to hop the Channel in. Not many, if any, of the planes left interest me. One or two of the upcoming ones look good though.

And the Syria map is another Day One purchase.

It is areas looking like that. I would wait and see on release.

You find such flyovers on internet. I have been in area sort of. Actually been in most dcs Map areas.  I only once recogniced a area while flying over. And that was clod. Coming in over the cliffs over dover well I saw the whole coast area. It was unreal how I could recognize everything.
Except from that I really cannot relate to game maps and call them realistic

Oh I am. But mostly ww 2 areas I can relate to. I do not particularly relate so much to post ww2 war. I started with DCS because of the choppers SU 25 snd A 10

Good, the Federation of Accredited Map Sluts needs as many members as possible.

Probably the A-10 that got me into DCS. The A-10, like the IL2, is irresistible.

I live in S  E kent, and can tell you the clod map is rubbish compared to the new DCS channel map. The DCS map is the first channel map that actually has a correct height map, and i can fly down all the valleys that i know well,  something that always bugged me in the clod map.

That might be true, I fly P 47 on that map and really enjoy both france and English coast.
But at the time I flew over this map was not there. Next time I might find that true

How is dcs ww2 multiplayer? I have the p 51, 109 and dora from a while back but I cant get into most servers without a map and the ww2 assets, not sure I want to buy all that unless it's worth it.

First time ever I felt DCS WW2 was worth anything was when channel map and P 47 arrived. P 51 is good also but not alone.

I can't speak to the multiplayer part, but it's fair to say the Channel Map and the WWII Assets package give you the best WWII eye candy available. It's really a step above.

On the down side, you need solid hardware to make it run well. The map is said to chew up a lot of RAM.

Mmm...Death Metal? Especially if it's Scandinavian Melodic Death Metal - that's super cool?

Do you have a link to such video?

Although, I must agree, something like Cannibal Corpse doesn't fit for such kind of videos.

It's an instrumental of Mighty Wings from Top Gun, and probably why he picked it.

It doesn't fit the video, but I'll be damned if I let anyone hate on the foremost song from that soundtrack ?

Yeah hoping he's being sarcastic if not, someone needs a little dip in holy fire.

edit: to be fair the video itself is beyond dumb.

Just took the Harrier up for the first time on the new rig. (Had to reset all the controls on all my planes.) Couldn't use it at all on the Channel map before, now getting 50+FPS and it looks great. Perfectly suited for that map, very cool to VSTOL on those great looking grass airfields low cruise the hills.

Watched a good video on setting up your Nvidia card, really improved the image. Still can't find my Steam screenshots though.

Do you have a link to the video? I’ve not changed my settings since forever so wouldn’t mind seeing if I could get some improvements?

DCS world (not my cup of tea) has just released P-47D and retails on steam at £32.99 our Battle of Normandy with 10 planes and terrain looks like a real bargain.

Different people have different desires and expectations when it comes to flight sims (or anything else, really). Having choices is good.
