Hello,

I am fairly new to IL2. I encounterIl-2.exe.8408.rared some crashes during several Missions of "Battle of Bodenplatte". The most prominent one (see crash file attached) occured during the P-47 Mission "River Fire". I also attached a screenshot (was taken with my phone as my PC was not responding anymore). You can see the mission start screen with the map which is basically red. I encountered this "Red Map" problem with the resulting game crash also on the "Wind of Fury" scripted campaign. Only once I was able to get my PC to respond and take an actual screenshot (see CLR-Fehler: 80004005). Every once in a while I got a glimpse on other error messages but was not able to take screenshots.

However, this "Red Map" problem does not occur all the time. Most of the time the crash follows the same pattern:

  • Start the mission "River Fire" (because I need to pick the game up somewhere and I really like the P-47)
  • Take off as planned and follow the rute on the map
  • Somewhere around wpt. 2 the screen freezes. At this point I can:
    • still Pause via "p"
    • still hear the engine roar
    • some inputs are recognized (firing the guns, throttle adjustments). I can tell by the sound only...
    • otherwise, the rest is frozen (tabing out, going to task manager, etc) does not work and I have to turn off the PC the hard way...

Same also happens during the Me-262 "Bomber Hunt" mission. Other missions I can´t tell since I haven´t tried them yet.

Please help me, I am not much of a PC guy and can´t solve this on my own... I´d really like to play ?

Thank you in advance,

Markus

Hello agian,

I just tried the Tempest "Rat catcher" mission and the game crashed. I could not find a dump report but I attached some from a couple of days ago. CrashDumps.rar

This tiem I got another error message (see screenshot). The crash wouldn´t allow the PC to respond anymore... I am really desperate...

The game is currently running via Steam. Some days ago I ran a file check, it updated - did not work either. Re-installation did not help either...

Hope someone can help!

Regards,

Markus

1. try to make "verify integrity of game files" in the game properties(in steam);

2. reduce the graphic settings options in the settings.

Hello,

Thank you for your response!

Today marked the first time that the game also crashed on a Fortress of the Volga mission (it was #4). Game just froze but I was able to use the task manager to kill the process.

I tried to verify the game files via steam last week (before my initial post) but the crashes still happened. I then deleted the game and re-installed but to no avail.

Just now i went from High graphic settings to Medium to try your idea but it did not help - i still had the same crashes (tried several different missions) . I used the FPS counter during a mission, was always between 47 and 80, not the best but I am ok with this!

Setup of the PC:

AMD FX8350 - not overclocked

RAM 8 G

MSI GeForce GTX970 - not overclocked

I don't know what CTD means, but the crashes appeared mainly in Battle of Bodenplatte content (apart from afore mentioned today's Fortress of the Volga crash)

Ah, I see... So the problem might not be Software related but in fact Hardware? Hm now i got to figure out how to tune my PC (or get a new one... Or just stop playing..)

24gb of ram (from the post you linked) really is a lot, didn't think the game required such a hardcore machine :(

Toda i tried again on the lower settings but got another crash, this time actually with an error related to memory. I will lower some more settings and try again but I got a bad feeling

Hello, reporting multiple game crashes (once a month on average) :

Both occurred with the following:

In what game mode (MP/QMB/campaign/scenario);  MP

In what mission;  Combat box (Rhineland) and TAW (Stalingrad).

What did you do before the crash;  Just performed a mission normally ; start up, take off, transit, combat : happened flying different type of aircraft : bf109, 110 .

What happened in the mission before the crash;  alaways happens in the thick of things, over target area, when firing to an opponent, low over the ground (50 to 100m high).

Additional info you think is relevant to the crash.  the game freezes for a millisecond, just for me to print in my mind the picture of the muzzle flash of my guns firing, then I go immediately back to desktop without further sign or warning. TAW reported me as a DISCO and accounted me for shot down as I had received light damage. Last crash happened yesterday just after the update but I had had that before.

Thank you for your time if you investigate.

Hello, reporting a game crash (happened only once so far) :

occurred with the following:

In what game mode (MP/QMB/campaign/scenario);  MP

In what mission;   TAW (Stalingrad)

What did you do before the crash;  loading the server map after it had flipped (i wasn t connected on the previous one,  tried to join after the reset).

What happened in the mission before the crash;  crash happened when joining : instead of getting on the map screen i ended on a spectate view in background with  the server list in foreground, and the mouse cursor stil in waiting mode.

Additional info you think is relevant to the crash. I let the cursor wait for about 5min then did an Alt Ctrl Del to get out as it was obviously frozen. When i relaunched the game all my graphic settings were gone (i ended in window mode, with different res...) and some game settings as well (music, sounds...). This happened after the Hurricane update after I had the opportunity to fly on Combat Box for 1h without incident.

Thank you for your time if you investigate.

I have been a long time user but only flying around once a month recently. Since most recent update (Update 4.502), i have experienced multiple  CTD loading quick mission. Aircraft selection is fine then next stage = CTD.

@Redwulf__68, please read the first message:

To analyze the CTD, i need a dump file and preferably a mission file(gen.mission), it is located in the \il 2_folder\data\missions folder.

Hi There,

I am out of practice doing this kind of system investigation.

Please explain what you mean here:

1. To enable Windows Error Reporting, run (double-click) this log file:
\data\EnableErrorReporting.reg

I saved the text with file name .bat into my IL2 directory ran in & nothing happened. What am I doing wrong?

2. In a case of the game crash open the folder where crash dumps are stored, you can do this by running this batch file:
\data\ViewCrashDumps.cmd

Same answer for as above, saved the text with file name .bat into my IL2 directory ran in & nothing happened. What am I doing wrong?  how can I find crashdumps?  is this in IL2, windows or where?

3. Sort the dump files by date to find a newest one-

Seems easy but I don't know where to look

4. Zip the newest dump file "Il-2.exe.****.dmp" (**** is a random number)

Two CTDs on Combat Box MP server tonight.  Had one disconnect prior to this. Using SRS, EDtracker software, and OpenTrack 2.3.10. Never had a CTD from Multiplayer before, only occasional disconnects.

EDIT: one other person reported a first-time CTD in that mission afterwards in the chat.

I run a server computer hosting the AKA_Expert and AKA_Private Campaign multiplayer (MP) channels. I have a second computer (my game computer) on the same network and was able to connect with the server's MP mission without difficulty until a couple weeks ago when the server started kicking me to the Win desktop as soon as the mission map should appear (after files are downloaded from the server). I am able to join other servers for MP. I have tried correcting the problem by adding a router to the ISP modem and ports are open for 28000-28009 and 28100-28109. I've attached my most recent crash dump file. I was able to connect one time in the past 2 weeks and the mission performed fine, but when I tried to connect to the same server mission (AKA_Expert) I got kicked again after the server files downloaded. Any suggestion will be much appreciated!

  • When you encountered the crash; after filed were downloaded and the scroll bar was all the way to the right
  • In what game mode (MP/QMB/campaign/scenario); MP
  • In what mission; while trying to enter the AKA_Expert and AKA_Private Campaign server
  • What did you do before the crash; Tried to join the mission on the server
  • What happened in the mission before the crash; the files downloaded from the server and the game crashed just prior to displaying the mission map.

Update: This message was initially posted on 11/15/20. I finally resolved the problem by upgrading the computer, reinstalling Windows and DirectX. In addition, the server was modified to look for version 6 instead of version 4 IP addresses. No crashes since!

What are your system stats? A DX error like that sometimes means a problem with the video card.

I have a crash dump file. Here it is.

This occurred under the following conditions.

1. Playing Scripted Campaign mission 2 Lightning Strikes.

2. Game locked up at point of carrying out bombing mission on target.

3. Came off Autopilot and proceeded to bomb target then it locked up. Did not crash to desk top or back to steam.

4. Mouse still worked and could close the game but took a number of try's with ctrl+alt+delete to get task manager to open on screen where I could close the game.

I have no crashes with the game, only the Editor.

But i found that autopilot does not work always with TC at least with an waypointed tank route ... you cannot switch it on or off after a few waypoints been executed any more ...

I don't know if that's also with other GB modules however. (This is since game 4.505c.)

Attempting any quick start mission. After selecting the mission and clicking 'Start' I get a CTD

In what game mode (MP/QMB/campaign/scenario); QMB

In what mission; Any, across multiple maps

What did you do before the crash; select mission and choose plane

What happened in the mission before the crash; N/A

Additional info you think is relevant to the crash. I haven't played for around 4 months, I've just got a new monitor and have tried running at 1440 and 1080. Neither are working. Did a complete fresh install but it hasn't helped.

Ok, found it. Having EVGA X1 Precision (the Windows application version) running caused the crash. Using the Steam version of EVGA X1 works perfectly. Why that's the case I've no idea...

More accurately, it's the OSD overlay that was messing it up.

  • When you encountered the crash;

Started getting this kind if crash since 04/14/2021.

  • In what game mode (MP/QMB/campaign/scenario);

MP on Combat box server, wings of Liberty, quick mission. I noticed that it happens on Reingland map

  • In what mission;

different missions that use Reingland map

  • What did you do before the crash;

Performed normal flight without any noticable interraction

  • What happened in the mission before the crash;

Got to the area with high probability of interaction with enemy aircrafts

  • Additional info you think is relevant to the crash.

I tried to run steam version and non steam version of the game, and same issue happens on both of them. Also, I ran "Verify integrity of files" on steam, with it finding and downloading some files (Position in planes cockpits I guess, since every time I do verification those positions reset). After checking integrity of files the issue is still there. Also noticed that in tex.log file there are reports about failed load in graphics folder. I was not able to upload vrserver.exe dump file because of 5Mb limit and not being able to compress to smaller size.

In what game mode (MP/QMB/campaign/scenario);  QMB

In what mission; Prokhorovka Map

What did you do before the crash;  Trying to play any QMB on that map regardless of it being tanks or planes results in a CTD

What happened in the mission before the crash;  Hitting start mission on the briefing page crashes the game.

Additional info you think is relevant to the crash.  Haven't been able to use that map for almost a year.  Even tried several clean reinstalls.  All other maps and QMB work fine.

I have had a serious problem with the game for some time now that either causes a system crash with a blue screen and automatic restart in windows 10 at some point in the simulation, or simply a crash to desktop. About one in three missions ends up doing this. Before update 4.6 it was fine.

System specs attached.

The problem happens ONLY while playing Great Battles.

I verified files trough Steam, replacing some, but crashes continue.

I don't use any mod, but skins.

Conclusion
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2 crash dumps have been found and analyzed. A third party driver has been identified to be causing system crashes on your computer. It is strongly suggested that you check for updates for these drivers on their company websites. Click on the links below to search with Google for updates for these drivers:

nvlddmkm.sys (NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 466.11 , NVIDIA Corporation)

If no updates for these drivers are available, try searching with Google on the names of these drivers in combination with the errors that have been reported for these drivers. Include the brand and model name of your computer as well in the query. This often yields interesting results from discussions on the web by users who have been experiencing similar problems.

Read the topic general suggestions for troubleshooting system crashes for more information.

Note that it's not always possible to state with certainty whether a reported driver is responsible for crashing your system or that the root cause is in another module. Nonetheless it's suggested you look for updates for the products that these drivers belong to and regularly visit Windows update or enable automatic updates for Windows. In case a piece of malfunctioning hardware is causing trouble, a search with Google on the bug check errors together with the model name and brand of your computer may help you investigate this further.

Bug check description: This indicates that an attempt was made to execute non-executable memory.
This may be a case of memory corruption. More often memory corruption happens because of software errors in buggy drivers, not because of faulty RAM modules. Memory corruption can also occur because of overheating (thermal issue). There is a possibility this problem was caused by a virus or other malware.
The crash took place in the Windows kernel. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver that cannot be identified at this time.

please read the first post of this topic.

Please read what I wrote in my previous three messages; there are answers to all of your questions in first post of this thread. If you have no answers, it's useless to make other questions.

@greybeard_52, here are published messages with dumps of the game il 2, in your particular case, you put simply extremely settings for your system. I'm with your settings if I run the game, it uses at least 20-24 GB of RAM and 6 GB of video memory( I have 64 GB of RAM and 11 GB of video memory), tell me where your computer additionally still have 8 GB of RAM and 2-3 GB of video memory? Please, lower the graphics settings to the Balanced level to start with and use the MSI Afterburner to see the RAM and video memory usage on your system.

-DED-Rapidus,
I set the graphics to BALANCED and the defect disappeared. Later I only changed the Landscape filter to "Sharp" to eliminate shimmering, the Antialiasing type on MSAA to reduce jagging and I checked VSync to remove tearing. I have kept under control with the MSi Afterburner the committed RAM memory (which seemed to be the criticality of my system) and now it does not exceed 9 GB (of which 3 already occupied by programs running in the background). No crashes so far. Thank You very much.?

However, I have two observations to make:

1). Why, with four times the minimum requirements, my system cannot afford a medium to high graphics setting? You said earlier that for the settings I had before it took at least 20-24 GB of RAM and 6 GB of video memory. Could you publish here, or where you think it appropriate, for all users, a simple table of minimum requirements for the various graphics settings (LOW, BALANCED, HIGH, ULTRA), in order to reduce the probability of such errors?

2). With my previous graphics settings, Great Battles ran flawlessy on my system up to version 4.5. Could it have happened that the current version has introduced some criticalities in the management of the RAM memory?

Cheers,
GB

@greybeard_52, there are no changes, everything is purely individual when loading the system) the BP map loads the system very well.

  • When you encountered the crash;  Been a week or so, every session.
  • In what game mode (MP/QMB/campaign/scenario); MP, campaign, haven't tried in QMB or scenario since I'm most interested in MP.
  • In what mission;
  • What did you do before the crash; Started VR (Odessey Plus), Neck safer, and the game.
  • What happened in the mission before the crash; Nothing.
  • Additional info you think is relevant to the crash.   Steam update??

I've noticed that the game seems to be leaking a file, every time I verify the game files through Steam one file is always needing to be allocated.
