Wardogs gaming pictures.

I'm moving my pictures and posts from the "Has TC peaked" thread to remove some clutter. I'll be adding to this over time. More to come as time permits.

Tabletop gaming is just a 3D version of video gaming using models/miniatures.  Some guys go full out with super detailed models, whereas I prefer to use slightly less detailed models made primarily for gaming. They are going to get broken at some point.

I 've been a Battletech player for 25 years and also play X-wing, GF9's Tanks and Tanks modern age.  All use printed movement tables and dice to determine hits and damage. Occasionally, we will do a mix and match game that mixes sci-fi and real world just for fun.

1/87 scale M60A1's on the table as they would be in a normal tank on tank game.

In the the second PIC, we added in some larger scale BT mini's to do some combined arms.

The tank stats were created using a BT design program that is going on 20 years old.

Some 1/48 scale WWII armor being used with GF9's ruleset for their game Tanks. Super simple to use and games last maybe an hour, so getting a few in on a day of gaming is no issue.

The  manufacturers game mini's are 1/100 (and I have hundreds) but my tired old eyes don't play well with small stuff anymore so we will use 1/72-1/48 depending on the scenario a good bit. Just double the distances for movement etc.

Super simple to use and games last an hour, so getting a few in on a day of gaming is no issue.

How big are the tables?

My home game room table is 4' x 8'. We can add a 2'x4' extension if needed, but it gets really cramped moving around the ends.

Back when I still did public  games, we would often reserve three tables at the local game store and push them together for a 12' x 6' game surface.

These pics are from a 2002 game. At some game events, we ran three separate table with different terrain on each. City, desert and rolling hills/forest.

I haven't done anything public since the coof started back in 2019, so we just play at my house on the shop table whenever the boys come down to play.

And..thats enough of a thread derail in the TC forum.  To say I love tanks and big metal death machines is an understatement.

And I would like to see TC grow myself since I'm a much better tanker than I am a pilot. ☹️

I used to play the Avalon Hill war games back in the 1970's.  That was good stuff back in the day.

Still have all my old Battletech stuff from the 80s. Many good games with friends. Had one memorable campaign where we used Battleforce/Aerotech/Battletech in conjunction to do a planetary assault. Only bad thing was it took forever to finish. Lots of other tabletop games all boxed up. Starfleet Battles was another favourite.

I played my first BattleTech game back in 1991 and even ended up playing a few tournaments. Never won, even if one time I reached the finals. One of the most balanced games in terms of rules and overall conception. A gem. Other than that, yes, Avalon Hill is a legend even here in continental Europe (I've been living all my life both in France and Spain, countries where these games started to be famous -and imported- as early as in the 1970s).

If you allow me one comment Wardog, these games using miniatures I wouldn't call them "table top gaming". Plenty of other games are table top gaming as well, classic war games using hexagonal squares... and even roleplaying is "table top gaming". I'd say "miniature gaming" for games using distances in their rules, rather than squares I mean.

I mentioned roleplaying. It is a fascinating category of games. I roleplayed mainly from 1990 to 1995, with very sporadic RPG sessions since then. In roleplaying I spent those years playing RuneQuest, Star Wars (D6), MERP, Call of Cthuhu, Vampire, Aquelarre, Far West, Ragnarok, and many others.

In the domain of tactical combat (small scale combat, or skirmish gaming I may say), I have not good but EXCELLETN memories of Cry Havoc. Again: a gem.

More recently I played X-Wing and a few others.

But all of this is very time consuming. If I had the time I'd play a classic wargame about Waterloo (1815). I have the complete boxed set but never found the time nor the people to play with...

There is a free program called VASSAL that allows people to play many wargames online, either live or by email. It began as an aid for Advanced Squad Leader, but now has modules for hundreds of games. It is free and java based. https://vassalengine.org/

Nice, do you have some particular title to suggest to try?

I have used it to play ASL both by email and live; and solitaire some of the Operational Combat Series' games. But I don't do much board wargaming these days.

Nice thread, I play quite a lot of hex and counters wargames, mostly with a few gaming frinds with the same historical interest. And yes Vassal is great if you can't play face to face.

Here's some of the games I played this year:

Bloody April, WWI air combat game

The Dark Summer, D-Day and the breakthrough until August 1944

Empire of the Sun - the whole Pacific campaign

All these are produced by GMT Games-

Yes, my group did one campaign, and never did another. After that, we stuck to singe day events.  As life progressed, those got shortened to afternoon events...

And, Starship combat was also on the agenda back in the Late 90's, early 2000's. We liked the Full Trust rules for it's simplicity.

I sold all of my Full thrust fleets and about 90% of my SFB ships back in the mid-2000's due to getting laid off from a job. Didn't touch space combat again until X-wing came out.
