A complete guide to set up Head-tracking (Opentrack)

I was curious about this also, Google translate worked. Have to give this filter a try. No recommended settings but a good description of the filter properties.

Well, I've tried everything I can think of but nothing works :(

Are you running both IL2 and OT with admin privileges? If you just open OT up and start tracking does the octopus rotate as you are moving?

You can watch these videos to see if maybe you missed something.

I've done all of those things. The octopus rotates and everything seems to be functioning 100% normally - but it just doesn't work in BOS ?

This has got me stumped! Are you using the Steam version of the game? Starting OT before starting the game? Check the settings here:

It's not running via Steam.

Should 'Enable both' be the setting within the freetrack rollout? ATM mine is set to 'Use freetrack, disable Track IR'.

Posted

Try enable both first, and then the other options if enable both doesn't work.

Posted

Ok. One other thing, I know that F9 lets you switch through the different view modes (snap views etc) but does this also kinda switch Track IR/OT on and off?

Posted

If OT is running when you start the game then F9 only gives you centered. The game sees OT which overrides some of the view mappings. Starting the game with OT completely shut down gives all the view options when using F9.

Posted

Aha - it works now. Thanks! It was just that freetrack setting that needed 'Enable both' ;) Now I just have to redo the calibration etc :)

Great! Glad you got it sorted out!

Hi all, I hope that someone can help me. I have the official track hat and am using the standalone OpenTrack software. I tried getting the dimensions of the LEDs and fed them into OpenTrack and although the left and right movements are excellent its the looking up and down where I have the issue.

Are there any default measurements for the LED placement? Or can someone provide me with their settings that have this working well?

What exactly is the issue with looking up/down? If you are not getting the full 90 degrees up/down go into the mapping and make sure the pitch is set to 180 degrees.

I will try to explain with my poor English my issues. Maybe someone will be kind enough to help me.

I tried to set up OT as fine as explained in the previous pages. However, I have the impossibility to look 90 degrees overhead or all the way down to my seat. I also don’t have the same visibility to my left six as on my right six.

When I try to look behind me, on the left, I can’t see much after my seven as from the right side, I can go all the way to my six without problem.

Looking up, I can’t go more than 70 degrees. It’s quite annoying, especially in combat or when trying to form up with wingmen and/or leader...

Maybe you need to fiddle with the mappings. Here are my settings for Yaw and Pitch:

I’ll try that, thanks

Thanks you @J2_Bidu!

It works.

Only annoying thing is, now, I can't look to my six. More I can do is 5. Some other tip to fix that?

Well, you can force the yaw to reach maximum value earlier. I don't stretch it too much because it feels a bit artificial. To look at six I lean to one side and twist my head to the other, much as you'd actually do IRL.

With OT running open the mapping window and select the yaw tab. Yaw left and watch the motion of the marker as it slides up. When you have turned your head as far as is comfortable for you observe where the marker is, you then want to slide the top point to the left until the marker moves to the top when your head is turned. You can use the same for left/right, or make separate mappings for left/right. This is artificial for sure, but it will give you the movement you are looking for.

There is a new smart phone app just out which tracks your head position using the phone camera, and feeds it to Opentrack via wifi. Its called SmoothTrack and sells for $9.99 / £9.99

After a bit of usual tweaking of Opentrack settings I have got it working really well on BOS. Very impressed. No wires / headsets / LEDs / special cameras and very cheap. Would recommend it.

Hi all,

Im brand new to flight sims and I’ve been losing the airfield and crashing my spitfire for a couple of Weeks now?

I have just got SmoothTrack running with OpenTrack, but when I try it in the sim the head tracking is all over the place.

ive tried different settings, but still no luck.
I was wondering if anyone else is using the same setup and would have any info or a profile to get me started.

It has to track your face, correct? Is there any backlighting or anything like that in the room you are using it in? When you open OpenTrack just by itself, does it seem to work smoothly and just go crazy in game>

Hi thanks for the reply.

no there is no back light, it’s just very jittery in the game.

Did you try changing the smoothing setting in the games camera settings? Might deal with the jitter...

Hi’

thanks for the comment,

ive had a look at the game, but can’t seem to find any smoothing settings. Could you tell me where they are exactly.

For my track hat clip this works, and assign a button for the reset center on your joystick controller or keyboard, you''l need that often.

Copy this *.ini file into your opentrack users folder.

Settings might be (slightly?) different due camera and place of it, and false light from a lamp might cause problems.

Thank you very much to all that replied to my post.

I now have OpenTrack and SmoothTrack working together, albeit still a little jitter but not as bad as it first was.

Not sure which filter you are using in OT, but you can make some adjustments to the filter setting. These are mine for the accela filter:

I am also happy with "Smoothtrack".

There is even now the option for USB connection, so better latency.

Where is that option for USB?   I downloaded the app today and all I see is the WiFi options an the only instructions are for setting it up for WiFi.

I've found a great way to connect SmoothTrack on Android to Windows via USB which should work a lot more reliably than via your WiFi. It does not even require an update to SmoothTrack.

- Enable adb-debugging on your device https://developer.android.com/studio/command-line/adb.html#Enabling
- Download the open source "gnirehtet" server (1 MB): https://github.com/Genymobile/gnirehtet/releases/download/v2.5/gnirehtet-rust-win64-v2.5.zip and extract it.
- Download Android platform tools (8 MB): https://dl.google.com/android/repository/platform-tools-latest-windows.zip, and extract the following files to the gnirehtet folder:
adb.exe
AdbWinApi.dll
AdbWinUsbApi.dll

- Plug in your Android device via USB
- Double-click on "gnirehtet-run.cmd" in your gnirehtet folder
- Your device will ask you whether you want to connect to the VPN connection Gnirehtet is creating for you - say OK.
- Press Windows key -> "Command Prompt" -> type "ipconfig" -> find your IPv4 address
- Now start up OpenTrack, set UDP as input (check its port), start up SmoothTrack, enter your IPv4 address + port and hit Start!

I'm interested in the track hat clip solution, Is it possibile to place the camera on top of a laptop screen? If this is the case, do I need to recalibrate every time I close and reopen the laptop?

Make sure you get the "PS3 Eye Monitor Clip". That should allow you to place it on your laptop. Keep in mind that the PS3 Eye is a bit heavy so sadly I cannot guarantee that it will stay perfectly on the top of your laptop screen.
Luckily, it's not a big deal if the camera moves a bit so you wont need to calibrate each time.

Thanks so much for this post. I have been using open track in IL-2 and DCS and it has been great, with that said I do have a major issue that I am unable to look completely straight up. This causes me a lot of heartache where I lose targets when I am in a rolling scissor. I took some screenshots of what happens when I move my head up. Looking straight forward up is no problem. The issue is if I try to see if I wanted to tilt my head fully back and look at directly what is above me. The camera seems to get stuck in the front part of the top cockpit. I took some screenshots so you can see with the graph of what it looks like.

If you are tilting your head back, and not just looking up, you're inducing some movement on the Z axis. You may have to do some experimenting with the "relative translation" settings tab on the options window.

Just got to this sim (and Tan Crew) coming back to simming from years back.
Does anyone have a starting point for fine tuning settings for Combo: Camera (PS modified), Hat Track Clip Pro, and Open Track.

Thx in advance,

I have modified PS-3 eye with DelanClip, and I'm running OpenTrack.

I believe first and foremost you have to buy and install the PS-3 eye driver. It's inexpensive: 2.99 USD (Paypal)

You can do it here: https://codelaboratories.com/products/eye/driver/

I can share my OpenTrack configuration with you if you need it, but it wasn't too hard to do. Yours may differ due to distance, camera placement, lighting conditions.

But I could never do a better job than what's done here:
