AndyJWest Posted August 6, 2019 Posted August 6, 2019 (edited) Flying something different: a Horten Ho IVa flying wing glider in X-Plane. ? A Stinson tows me to 2500 metres. Seemed wise to start high, as I need to learn to fly it before I land... Prone position looks uncomfortable, but gives a good view forwards. Handling is a little tricky. Not very stable in pitch or yaw. I managed to find one good thermal, but staying in it was hard work. Managed to land back on the runway. Those big spoilers are really effective. Trooper117 Posted August 9, 2019 Posted August 9, 2019 Such a great looking game... it's getting better too!
AndyJWest Posted August 11, 2019 Posted August 11, 2019 More X-Plane gliding: ridge-soaring the ASK 21 over Aoraki/Mount Cook, New Zealand. ? 12,800 ft on the clock. I'd been another 100 ft or so up at my highest point. This is looking back the way I came, up the ridges on the right. 1

Trooper's screenshots are of Elite Dangerous, not SC. More X-Plane mountaineering, this time in the Andes. That's Aconagua in the distance, at 22,837 ft the highest mountain outside Asia. 28 minutes later, I'm at the top. Or rather, 300+ ft above it, in a healthy updraft. Hard to get any higher though, as the area of lift gets smaller as you climb. I've done Everest too, but I cheated somewhat by starting with a winch launch from Syangboche airstrip, at 12,500 ft. I'll probably try it again sometime from an airfield I can actually get back to. Not sensible with Syangboche, as I'd be landing downwind on a short runway with a mountain face at the end... Anyone else trying this in X-Plane should remember to turn off hypoxia. 1
Bremspropeller Posted August 16, 2019 Posted August 16, 2019 F-86 on patrol over Korea, heading for MiG Alley. At 50,000ft one surely has slipped the surly bonds of Earth. She doesn't quite like it up here - I'm in moderate buffet all the time. Coming back into the pattern above some undisclosed UN airfield in South Korea. Turning base. Quite a nice view this evening. Base-to-final turn. Dirtied up, she flies like a champ, too! On a low-level fam/ navigation trip over an undisclosed town in southern Korea. I guess that qualifies me for the Mach Busters Club! Base-to-final after an uneventful mission over Korea. 2 1

Bremspropeller Posted September 20, 2019 Posted September 20, 2019 (edited) Fooling around with the FlyJSim 727 V3 above the skies of Sydney. The airplane is a lot of fun, but it needs to be flown hands-on. The 727 is one of the most important airliners in history: It brought jet-traffic to a runway near you: It could take-off and land on very short runways and - especially the later versions - could serve transcontinental flights in North America or even Australia. The wings almost tear themselves apart when you deploy the flaps, so lots of trim-changes are going on. You need to be on-speed or you're all over the place. Going beyong Flaps 15 puts a lot of drag on the jet and you better be ready to grab a fist-full of throttles or high sinkratey will occur in no time at all! The TLAR-setting (That Looks About Right) for Flaps 40 is 5000lbs/hr of fuel-flow on each engine! No matter, they were wired-shut for Stage III Noise-Category compliance... Flaps 2! Only a section of leading-edge slats is deployed. Flaps 5 adds two more sections of slats, some inboard Krueger Flap leading-edge devices and the first movement of trailing-edge flaps. The 727 prototype in United-colours on a worldwide sales-tour at Brisbane. The actual airplane can be seen at the Museum of Flight in Seattle at Boeing Field. Now who is the schmuck who took off on that taxiway? On the run for Melbourne. Fly the entire departure? Ain't nobody got time for that! Ansett and TAA were in fierce competition and flights were usually scheduled simultaneously. It wasn't unheard of to have crews play (dirty) tricks on each other to get a short cut. Airspace speed-restrictions weren't introduced till the 90s, and 727s and DC-9 only had one speed after sucking up the gear: Barberpole! The 727 could hold 380KIAS out to 20 miles on final - the DC-9 could do 300KIAS in to 10 miles (280KIAS Slat-speed)! Coming back in from the active for a nights's rest at Sydney. Semor76 Posted September 21, 2019 Posted September 21, 2019 (edited) My new ride....a Lotus 49b. Build in ´68 for the 1969 F-1Championships. This sweet little Car is hell on Wheels with 415PS at 535kg weight and a top speed of nearly 300km/h Had a blast with it at tonight´s 30 laps online race at the 1967 Kyalami (Southafrica) track. Finished with a good 7th from 18. This beast is insanely difficult to learn. But once you master it, it feels so rewarding. Back in those days, guys like Graham Hill or Jim Clark must had balls of steel. Today in Sim racing, so many jumped on the GT-3 hype train. I can´t see it anymore. I´m more for the classic Formula/ Touring cars from the 60,70,80 and ´90. Tracktion/Stability Control, ABS and those electronic stuff is totaly overrated ? Edited September 21, 2019 by Semor76 1
Bremspropeller Posted September 21, 2019 Posted September 21, 2019 It's so refreshing to see he old cars where everybody was experimenting in a shop and when they didn't have a multi-million big-corporation budget behind them to test their cars. Way more attached to the fans and people tweaking their own cars. 1

Yes!! A holiday trip from Gatwick to Minorca in one of these in the early seventies. i must have been eight or nine. After the excitement of boarding, taxiing past the other planes and take off, I fell asleep. Dad got himself invited onto the flight deck and when I awoke the stewardess took me up there too. I was absolutely agog!! 9/11 did for air travel as a fun, exciting and pleasurable experience. R.I.P. 1

It’s not a destroyer sim, but you might be interested in Atlantic Fleet. It lets you command RN, RCN, RAN, and Kriegsmarine destroyers (as well as submarines and capital ships) in turn-based tactical battles that take place in the context of a larger campaign. https://youtu.be/zn0uVe3hnZA

NETSCAPE Posted September 23, 2019 Posted September 23, 2019 (edited) A Soviet Platoon is nearly wiped out by 4 x 8 cm GrW 34 at a range of 2,000 meters. The 369th Croatian IR perform flanking maneuvers on Soviet mortar positions. A light mortar crew moves into position to provide covering fire. --- Mortars lay smoke, Artillery pounds the tree line and heavy MGs suppress the enemy... Angriff! 3rd Platoon, the reserve, is sent to their baptism of fire. Recon reports no enemy armor so all available guns are used in the fire support role. Edited September 24, 2019 by NETSCAPE 2

Bremspropeller Posted September 27, 2019 Posted September 27, 2019 Leaving Sydney for a leisure-trip. Any guesses? You had me at "Gear Up!" Leaving Lord Howe Island with a light 727-100 for a CIVA INS test-flight to Norfolk Island. The trip is about 550nm and I took a fuel-load of roughly 1000nm range at normal cruise. The 727 took off (Flaps 20, packs off) with about 25% of runway-length to spare. Descending into Norfolk at sunset. The runway isn't exactly of the "intercontinental" size either, but it does not create any problem for a light 727. If you have never heard of Air Gemini, you might check out this video - it's in French but some visuals are awesome (despite the crappy resolution):
