Nothing fancy, just simple and functional.  Getting ready to add bass shakers under the seat platform for connection to the SimShaker sound module.

It's a good looking rig. Have you considered head tracking? You don't have to go for an expensive TrackIR, there are plenty of cheaper options, and I think it'd really increase your enjoyment. (Maybe you have head tracking and I just didn't spot it in the pictures).

Yes, I was looking at Track IR, but found that it has issues with variable refresh rate monitors.  I also play DCS, and I was going to have to fool around with settings in order to lock my frame rates at 60 fps to prevent stuttering with Track IR.  I recently bought a new custom gaming computer that will deliver far more than 60 fps.  So, I was not going to put the brakes on my new gaming rig just so I could use Track IR.

I contacted Natural Point about this limitation and they will not respond to me.  So, until that issue gets resolved, I will put off getting Track IR.  I don't know if the cheaper tracking options have the same monitor refresh rate issue or not.

That seems weird. Head tracking is basically mapping your real life head movement to a virtual joystick, which is then used for pilot head movement. The update frequency for the head tracker should be unrelated to the refresh rate on your monitor. We had this query on our Discord in the last couple of days and someone said they had head tracking working fine with a 144hz monitor. I suspect this is just bad info or some strange quirk with the (expensive, probably garbage) TrackIR(TM).

Posted

It is a well-documented problem discussed at length in the DCS forums.  Has to do with the  latest Track IR camera having a refresh rate of 120Hz.  If your computer monitor is not 120Hz , or a multiple thereof, e.g., 60Hz, you have to cap the fps in DCS to 60 Fps.  Otherwise, you get continual stutters.

Even though 60 fps is very playable, I don't want to fool around with the hassle of  trying to get it to work satisfactorily.  I will just wait until there is a hardware/software fix.

Has no one in the IL2 forums ever experienced this?  Maybe it is a DCS programming issue that IL2 has circumvented.

Posted

Weird.  I've had 120 hz followed by 144 hz monitors running for more than ten years now, using trackir, and DCS.  This is the first time I've ever heard this.

News to me as well. Have to check this in DCS. Having a 120Hz screen and some stuttering in game.

There's my "Do It Myself" cockpit pictures from my man cave = my home. I'm a musician and those instrument and accessory cases are very good side walls and bases to my DIY throttle console, keyboard, tablet, mouse and beer cans. Because I fly mostly Luftwaffe aircrafts also the very comfortable car seat is from BMW! :)

From the last picture you can see my prototype (first one) throttle console, it's three years old now. It's alittle bit different than my production models which you can see here in my Official Web Pages: Kanttorin Kone Throttle Console

Nice and I see, you have the same "issue" like me, namely your flight duties depend strongly on the cat's mood...

And ....I have had 2 cats ?

Well, we're all a bunch of individualists in a certain way - cats are very individualists too, independent and therefore very suitable companions for us.

They do what they want, choose their people (companions too) and do not obey in any way. I love their being.

OK, this is the very definition of W.I.P.  May I present "Forbin...The Covid Project!"  (Don't judge. Everyone's sim has looked this way at one time or another. )                                          Early this Spring, starting off with little more than a laptop and a mouse, I decided to build a sim.  As you can see things got a little carried away.  Today I'm in the process of setting up my just received Warthog HOTAS.  In a few days my SimStore Takeoff panel and Combat panel should arrive along with my Logitech Switch panel.  Nothing is fastened down yet, still trying to see what works or doesn't.  Although it is up and running quite nicely, thank you.  And all this done without plans!!!  Who knew, right?  I fly VR so blind tactile ergonomics trump appearance. If it is ever finished it'll be somewhat of a hybrid of simpit and that old laptop I started with...................

Irony #1. I'm getting over a back injury and currently it's too painful to sit in the 'cockpit', yet laying on the floor sorting out USB cables is fine.

Irony #2. One of the reasons I built this is that I cannot any longer afford to fly full scale.  Yet so far it has cost more than it did to get my Private ticket.

LBR=HBartels: Nice setup!  I'm curious about the switch/knob/button box.  Are the knobs pots for axis control? I'm always looking for more sliders. Also did you construct it yourself?   Thanks in advance!

Hi Chief

I buy. This Knobs are digital recorders/encoders, are not very useful in il2 but on dcs is very good.
You need one that has potentiometers to have more axis.

Thanks for the reply.  I fly DCS as well so may have to look into one of these...............

I use the encoders in IL-2 for selecting bomb and rocket salvos and timings. Works very well for that and other minor buttons.

Starting out with nothing more than a laptop and a mouse I'm gonna go ahead and call it complete, but I suspect it'll never be really done.  Still got a couple of gremlins to eradicate, but overall the system is running quite well.

Very beautiful these panels, does it work well in il2 and dcs?

Here is mine, wanted something on casters that folded up cleanly to store under the corner of my desk. When I’m ready to fly, I wheel it out, unfold it, and play. Platforms for the Throttle/Stick adjust on 3D printed brackets/clamps. The front uprights also mount steering wheel for use with racing sims as you can see my pedals are actually for a car setup. Throttle quad/button box is all personally designed and 3D printed. Excuse the blue knobs, I ran out of filament and really wanted to finish it off!

For IL-2 everything works very well with the exception of the Logitech switch panel.  That's for X-Plane & MFS which are installed but not setup yet.  With DCS the WinWing panels seemed to have tanked my FPS in VR.  One of those lil' gremlins I mentioned.  The two large panels in the back are real and are from the Flight Engineer's station of a C-141B.  Just set dressing there--non functional.  (For Now!)

After spending 35 years in aerospace I like to think of myself as a fair decent mechanic.  But for the life of me I can not screw two pieces of wood together without making the dog's breakfast out of it.  The ingenuity and craftsmanship here are almost a work of art.  Well Done!

I made it minimalistic, as I do not have dedicated room for flying :)

When I do not play:

When I play:

Devices are screwed on aluminum plate, throttle quadrant is angled so I can at same time push HOTAS throttle and RPM on quadrant. Cable management is  3d printed ( https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2742694 ), or not printed ( https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:48220 ).

Still work in progress but it allows me some 3 point landings in a 109 ? PC is tuned up, rock solid, last bit of hardware is a Reverb G2.

I'll be getting rid of the table this week, monitor going on the wall with kb & mouse on a sliding rack. I fly VR in IL2, Elite and Squadrons so as long as the seat is comfy I'm good to go. I might raise the MFG's a bit (about 15cm).
