I’m jealous.

One of the things I find endlessly fascinating and alluring about GB is the history.

So in the U.S. original New York is essentially gone, what little remains of original Boston or Philadelphia is a few hundred years old. Been there but a moment.

In Britain you can walk into a 700 year old Pub. Just from a structure standpoint that’s amazing to me, even if it was originally a carriage house or something. However in some cases an establishment has actually been a pub for all that time! You just can’t get that here. I use a pub only as an example - point is…history. I geek out on it a bit.

So I’m envious of your fantastic vacation. :)

If i chose to walk out of my front door now, in less than 2 minutes I could be stood outside Lincoln Cathedral with my back to a Castle (bit grand calling it that but it was/is) that dates back to Norman times if not more having walked under a stone gate dating back to the Romans. 5 minute drive in the other direction and Im at Scampton and all the more recent history that holds.  But im sat dumped in front of my puta cos a) its gone midnight but mainly b) because I take a lot of it for granted.

I think sometimes we Brits mock the enthusism of visitors without realising how lucky we are.

@Lusekofte I really pleased you enjoyed your stay (but can assure you that not all of the rest of the uk is same :-))

Some of it. I won't name names, since it would upset the inhabitants of Slough, but there are places I'd definitely recommend avoiding, if you aren't a fan of anonymous nothingness interspersed with reminders of the futility of existence.

Easy to take for granted I'm sure. I do the same thing with my surroundings (Pacific Northwest woods etc), just outside my door.

I have to make a point to remind myself to appreciate it sometimes.

I've got to go visit Raptor..... he's a stones throw from the Welsh border, if DNA is accurate I'm 72% Welsh, 23% Scots Irish, with some Norwegian and German to top it off. Besides Rap owes me a pint. I've done did a 20 year long World Pub crawl thanks to the USN,  but never got to GB.

What's wrong with Slough? Wales is okay but it looks really old. Slough is modern. And don't forget the renowned beat combo group Cliff Bennett & the Rebel Rousers hailed from the picturesque surrounds of Slough.

The church a few hundred metres up the road from my house is over a 1000 years old......

They had some really impressive design features in those old churches, the main one being the building is always at least 10 degrees C colder than outside......

According to the historical documentary Hearts of Iron IV, Slough started WWII.

Back on topic, though, I watch Welsh TV, have a Welsh name, and live in New South Wales, so does that make me an honourary Welshman? ?

Sir John Betjeman who's opinion of Slough is well known, described the Town Hall as "a striving for unity out of chaos". Which is possibly accurate. They were striving for it, though one might well argue they didn't actually achieve it. And, entropy being what it is, the inevitable consequence of creating anything vaguely ordered out of chaos is that one increases bland uniform nothingness everywhere else. Slough is what the heat death of the universe will look like. The Town Hall is a monument to humankinds futile attempts to stave off the inevitable. As such, it probably merits listing...

@Gambit21 @Hoss If any one really is over here and up for pub crawl let me know. I've been in them all - well all of the good ones anyway. I spent thirty years being paid to travel the length and breadth of Britain and took advantage. ?

@Lusekofte if you are still around Shrewsbury then you need to visit the Loggerheads in Church Street. One of the great survivals from a lost age.

@DD_fruitbat afraid I won't be getting down your way for a pint again. No relatives left in East Kent now and the house is sold. ?

See that is just incredible to me.

There’s a listed barn on the property where I live…it’s 50 years old or so. ?

The house I'm living in now is well over 100 years old. I stayed in a Welsh farmhouse once that dated from the 17th century.

@Lusekofte I’m going to return the favour here.

My wife and I went camping around Norway for our honeymoon. Up from Oslo, past Lillehammer, over to Bergen and then back through Telemark. The speed limit of 80km/h was odd at first but then relaxing - everyone was driving at the speed limit so you just trundle along.

We adored the peacefulness and lack of people. We found some beautiful little places - a lake in a forest or a brook with glacier ice water.

We enjoyed everywhere we went. The people were unfailingly polite and thankfully most spoke English. The “best” part for me was the hotdogs at every service station and the fries with piffi allkrydda on.

Camping just shy of a glacier and sharing a single flipping expensive bottle of beer was bliss.

I doubt I’d have liked the winter but I do want to go to the north around Tromso. One day…

We are now planning on what to do. Take the plane we reserved or prolong our stay.
Our daughter will study in Wales two more years. And we will come back two more years. We might take a flight to Glasgow next time and do Scotland before visiting Aberystwyth again. We been from north to south and it all been very exceptionally good experience. Love the places and people here

Was there 1 month moving all the family houses from Svea to Longyearbyen

And build up a one room accommodation for the workers instead.
It is kind of one of the places I rather be in a cruise boat and see it from small boats.

Agreed; it's a great place. If you cross the border back into England again let me know. You were only 40 miles away from me in Cardiff. I'll even buy you a pint.
