Tobruk Attack Ludicrous VR

Now this is an interesting video contributed by J-Hat taken from our Work-In-Progress Virtual Reality Visual Update that he recorded through his VR headset (right lens only).

Note from contributor J-Hat:

"Here’s another video of the Tobruk attack mission, this time in VR. I put my SteamVR SS resolution down to 70% so fps was mostly above 45 with a few dips (performance is just slightly better than at 100%). Gameplay is smooth though. Fully playable with this ridiculous amount of a/c in the air attacking Tobruk all at the same time.

It’s being run on a high end current gen pc."

Sorry J-Hat, not that I have anything against you, but I love the sound your engine makes while dying...

Other than that, superb video, thank you TFS.

(trigger michael caine accent) - you were supposed to show you could fly a P-40 without blowing the bloody engine up.

And thats what you call a target rich environment

@9./JG52_J-HAT amd @Riley

Thanks for taking the time to make and share. Seems the entire PR output currently rests with you two.

Couple of things immediately strike me - the first is volume and longevity of the smoke colums - they look very good. THe fires a llittel less so but this could also be the fps affecting them. Second is the terrain - i dunno if that the new or the old but, at allitude it again looks very good.

A couple of other things popped into my head (theres more than enough room). The sun reflection on the ocean appears to be "cut off" in some segments of the video - obvious the whole thing in a WiP but I just wondered if that something thats been noted (it could also be me, I'm currently PFD'd with muh back so have the attention span of a 3yr old with ADHD and a bag of sugar).

I did not see how many AI were placed obviously this had an effect on the frame times in certain parts. CloD is generally well regrded for its abilty to populate missions withoput turning into as slideshow though. As a 2D, flat earth, VR denying luddite, the lower frames here both me not. What would perhaps be good to see in future videos is a more conservative scenario that enables the VR to run at what the Snorklers would consider to be schmoov frame times. As a minimum Clod needs to match GB in this regard if its to carve its niche.

Finally both J-Hat and Riley are doing a great job at promoing CloD/DWT currently. I, for one, really appricate the effort (and it is an effort) taken. Without wanting to sound needy though, some more videos that show off improvements to the stuff people have noted they didnt like (the improvements on the map's surface in both the Channel and Med, airfied visibilty in DWT or the general object view distance fixes maybe) over and above dogfights and action may also help. As stated above, these videos are worth a 100 love letters. keep them coming and thanks.

Yes, Boo, the clouds' shadows on the ground seem to be a bit too dark. And, on the water, clouds seem to cast shadows that prevent a proper reflection of the sunlight.

Other than that, since a few videos now, it seems that the lighting of the environment cast clouds' shadows with the proper angle, so this, in my opinion, has been fixed.

Thanks, @BOO

re cloud shadows, yeah, it’s the time of day. Atm cloud shadows are for noon, so when the video is roughly at 12:00 they look correct. Not the case in this one. Cloud shadow (positions, color, intensity and shape) is being worked on and it had been noted by TFs already in the beta forums.
As have others things that are noticeable in the video. Believe me, I am a pita with my reports ?

I always think there is a certain granularity (is that a word or even spelt right?) to the graphics in CloD/DWT that adds an element of believability to the whole affair whether viewed in a VR HEADSET or with your dog sitting in front of the screen trying to catch the aircraft flicking by. GB doesnt quite acheive this, though isnt at all bad and even DCS can feel a little "drawn" at times.

Watching the video (and Pattles in the past) always helps to remind me of what I do love about the game despite all the things I dont. It also reminds me not to put myself in front of J-hat when he's got his mad on and full ammo belts!

@343KKT_Kintaro really, you are going to derail this one too? I knew I shouldn‘t have clicked „show this post“.. let it reach enough people with relevant information first, please.

It's a honest question. I'm not derailing anything, I'm reading your posts and want to understand them.

Hey Boo, J-hat is not in a good mood, so please tell me, what do you mean by "snorkels"? I'm a diver in real life (even if I stopped diving years ago) thus the classic meaning of "snorkel" makes few sense here. At least to me.

Agree, I’m curious about the “snorkel” reference, too

I’m guessing it’s a reference to how putting on a VR headset is kind of like putting on a snorkel mask. Just my guess though.

LoL! Sorry mate but not a good guess IMHO. A mask is a mask, and a snorkel is a snorkel. This guy below (source: Commons) is equipped with his mask on his face and his snorkel in his mouth:

He means if you wiewed it through a snorkel (tunnel vision, poor quality, difficult to see any detail). Just an anology.

Now, back on topic?

Thank you Puma, I didn't know that. Really. Even Charlo-Vr and Hoots were looking for a simple answer to a simple question.

J-hat, reread your first post after my question about the snorkels. If you simply had answered my question, we wouldn't have lost all of this time, we wouldn't have post all of these useless messages. As a conclusion: you are a professional forum derailer. Not me. You, J-Hat, you yourself and nobody else. Have a nice day.

Yeah, sure, you are right. But Boo hasn‘t answered yet, so technically we still don‘t know and can‘t get back on topic… I‘m with Hoots on this one.

Forget with who you are, J-Hat, for this is not what you are saying since the very beginning. This and this, are not acceptable responses in a forum. You are being rude with me, end of story. I kindly ask you to stop that once and for all.

Thank you Dagwoodyt, now we know you could find it is normal to enjoy flight simulation with a snorkel in your mouth...

WTH? Are you going crazy? How‘s that rude?

You always go off on a sidetrack, fact! Just like you did with this one. I asked you not to do it. You posted a huge picture of a snorkel diver! And are talking about what the analogy was, then accuse me of being a a professional derailer?

I thought you were joking, but now I know you weren‘t. And even though I am the professional derailer you keep going on with this that has nothing to do with the original topic.

Really… but whatever, I‘ll remember who I am dealing with next time.

I said, long enough ago, that I ask a simple and honest question. I'm asking what the word "snorkel" (or "snorkeler"?) is doing in this thread. If you think that only Boo knows the answer, then you should have answered something like "I don't know Kintaro, let's wait for Boo comes back to the thread and answers your question". This is not what you are doing J-Hat. You are agressing me. Please, stop.

The topic is too far off for me to reasonably clean up. I am locking the thread. Riley, you may repost your OP without edit and there will be no moderation regarding a duplicate post, so the original discussion may resume/continue. If you do repost, send me a PM and I will drop a link here as well.
