Everyone, thanks for the suggestions and comments. I ended up going the nuclear route: wiped my drives and reinstalled Windows 10. IL-2 + Varjo Aero appears to be stable with only the software for my peripherals and a VPN installed and running. I’ll add Simshaker next and see if that changes anything.

If the issues resurface, I’ll look at my memory and PSU (as suggested by @RAAF492SQNOz_Steve and @chiliwili69, respectively). BTW, my PSU is a Corsair HXi 1000, and I don’t use mods.

@Varibraun, I’m sorry the Aero didn’t work out for you.

That PSU unless really old should be quite adequate.

In that case you are fully covered for your 2080Ti, that PSU is also able to suply 83.3A for the 12V output.

Gald to see you solved the problem.

Just a heads up - today's Varjo Base updated has some major issues, might want to hold off a bit on installing it. I am holding off myself. They are fully aware of it and are communication on their official Discord channel.

Lol, they heard XRNeckSafer was working and had to put an end to that!

I only had to reset the software to fix the issue I had.

Good to know thanks. I still have not updated, may take a look at doing so tomorrow. Kind of hoping they get things sorted first.

Same experience here as well.

Still holding off here, will see how things look over on their Discord later today.

For anyone on the fence who is concerned about trying it out and being able to return it:  I found their return process to Helsinki from USA to be easy and efficient.

It was a total of 10 days (with 2 weekends) from my email request to return until the refund showed up on my card.  DHL picked up the headset directly from my house within 4 hours of scheduling.  So, great customer service.  I certainly may be a Varjo customer again down the line.

Varjo has identified the problem with 3.6 and hopefully hot fix coming next week. I have not yet updated to 3.6 and will hold off till the fix is out.

Note for Varjo users: We have identified a critical bug in the 3.6 Varjo Base release that can cause compositor crashing/blurriness for the user. We apologize for this inconvenience, and we are working urgently to fix it.

If you have updated Varjo Base to 3.6 already:
We are working on a hot fix now (3.6.1) that resolves the issue, and the ETA for this release is next week.

The quick fix today is to:
1. Either roll back to 3.5.1 through our downloads page (Varjo Base - Older Versions). This should clear all your issues.
2. Or, you have the ability to factory reset Varjo Base under Support -> Troubleshooting -> Reset Factory Settings, which will reset settings back to default. This fix can help you with blurriness, and  3.6 can work fine with this fix being done first.

If you haven’t updated Varjo Base yet:
We recommend using the previous Varjo Base version until the issue has been resolved.

Our team would like to thank the whole community for providing information and assistance in resolving the current issues. Thank you.
We’ll keep you posted as we continue to work on this. (edited)

Mind if I ask why you decided not to keep it? Do they charge restocking, shipping etc?

Hi @TX-Zigrat - No restocking or shipping (either way), everything was refunded, so there really is no risk in giving it a try.  I discussed my decision to return it in the post below, but @gnat has been successful running it with the 2080ti, so I may have been a bit hasty on the return.  Once I get a new system later this year it will definitely be on my consideration list again depending on what else is on the market at that point.

For anyone who’s interested…

I’m getting 50–60 FPS depending on the environment (e.g., 50–54 FPS on the ground and in clouds, 55–60 FPS immediately after takeoff and everywhere else) with the following hardware and settings:

- RTX 2080ti overclocked on a curve and with max power and temps

- i9-9900k at 5ghz

- 16gb RAM at 3600mhz (previously 32gb but I discovered that the RAM was indeed at the root of a bunch of PC issues)

- 1000w PSU (if that matters in this case)

- Varjo resolution quality high

- SteamVR render resolution at 130%

- screen res at 1024x768

- shadows at medium

- mirrors at medium

- distant landscape detail at x2

- canopy reflections off

- horizon draw distance at 100km

- landscape filter off

- clouds quality at high

- Antialiasing is MSAA but I have it off because of the SteamVR render resolution

- Dynamic resolution factor full

- full screen unchecked

- SSAO unchecked

- HDR checked

- sharpen checked

- 4K textures checked

- distant buildings unchecked

The game looks great and runs smoothly. No hiccoughs (after I removed a stick of RAM).

There was an argument in the forum if the Varjo had better performance, it feels that is does, and I think the reason is that you can run at at lower resolution than the other headsets and still get a much better and a very crisp image, mine runs very smooth 90fps most of the time with a 3090ti resolution is 3260x2796, before I used to run the VivePro2 at 3524x3020.

HDR try to see how you like it un checked, in the Varjo looks better IMHO and you gain FPS.

Posted by Varjo this morning regarding the 3.6 Hotfix on their official Discord:

3.6 Status update:

We have found the cause for the issues and are working on it.

It is essential that we can deliver an issue-free hotfix for you. To succeed in this, we must strictly pay attention to the quality instead of providing anything in haste. To avoid urgency-born issues, we have allocated additional time for improving the hotfix. We understand that waiting isn't what you would want right now, and we share the frustration. Working on the fix is currently set as a high priority. We will do everything in our power to make sure that the update can be delivered as soon as possible. Meanwhile, you may continue using Varjo Base 3.5.1.

Thank you for your patience.

Tried it out. I can't tell a difference between HDR on or off, and I got about 4 extra FPS. Thanks for the suggestion!
