DD_Friar Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 (edited) Salute Perhaps a strange request but I am trying to manipulate a mission that has been built by Syn_Vanders generator. I need to be able to tweak some of the units and settings within it but they are bundled as groups. I seem to be having an issue being able to ungroup them so I can make changes. I have tried setting them as the "Working Group" to make changes but still seem to be having issues. Is anyone able to advise please on the best way to Un Group bundled objects? Cheers DD_Friar Edited August 11, 2021 by DD_Friar
Thad Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 Salutations, If I remember correctly, just select (click and drag) around the entire group and then 'ungroup' it. You can then make changes and if desired 'regroup' it.

We need more detail about your issues. Exactly how did you set the group as a working group and exactly what issues did you have? For example, were you able to select the green icon representing the group, right click on it and choose "Set Group as Working". If not, it could be that your group is part of another group and you need to make that group the working group first. An easier method is to right click your group in the mission tree and choose "Set Group as Working".
DD_Friar Posted August 9, 2021 Author Posted August 9, 2021 Salute @JimTM I am trying to unpick a mission generated by the Easy Mission Generator utility (All hail the great Syn_Vander) so they are groups put together within that. I have tried clicking on some of the groups and selecting "Set Group as Working" and then looked for the "Ungroup" but that option does not become available? Many thanks for your attention and replying. Friar
Leon_Portier Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 I dunno if I understand the question right, the ungroup button ungroups groups
DD_Friar Posted August 9, 2021 Author Posted August 9, 2021 I am not seeing that option as available. Its greyed out If I could make it active, I do understand that is what would solve my issue.

Hit the reset working group button before trying it, I think it needs no working group active to work. Also make sure you have only the actual group object selected. DD_Friar Posted August 9, 2021 Author Posted August 9, 2021 (edited) Here is the position I have @[N.O.G.F]Leon_Portier I think your post crossed as I was putting this together. Edited August 9, 2021 by DD_Friar
JimTM Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 (edited) To ungroup a group , you must select the green group icon, but you cannot do that if the group is the current working group. If your group "G" is contained within a parent group "P", in the mission tree you can make P the working group, select the group G icon in the viewport, right click on it and choose "Ungroup". However, if it's difficult to find the parent group, do the following: 1. In the View Port, note the ID number of the group icon (e.g., group G) that you want to select. 2. In the "Search and Select" menu, choose "Find Mission Objects". The Find Mission Objects Dialog opens. 3. Under "Filter" select "Group". 4. Under "Double click result option" select "Move camera to object", "Select Object", "Select in mission tree", and "Set Working Group". 5. Click the "Find" button. Group IDs are shown in the left pane. 6. In the find results box, click the ID heading to sort by ID. 7. Scroll down to the ID for your group and double click it. 8. Close the "Find Mission Objects" dialog. 9. Right click on the selected group in the Viewport and choose "Ungroup". The current working group is now the parent group (if there is one) or the entire mission. More group information: Find the Group Containing an Icon That You Want to Select (pg. 25 in the editor manual) Add/remove an icon to/from a group. Edited August 9, 2021 by JimTM 1
Sketch Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 (edited) I'm not sure why imgur isn't embedding anymore...??? The forum mods need to take a look at that! Anyway, here's all of the gifs -> https://imgur.com/a/BuWSqwN How to ungroup an object in the Mission Editor https://imgur.com/nLY6gro First, set the correct working group. In the above image, I want to ungroup 'Dynamic Frontlines', which is a child of 'Templates and Frontlines'. Therefore, I must first set 'Templates and Frontlines' as my working group since it is a parent of 'Dynamic Frontlines'. I'm doing this by first selecting the parent group in the outliner, and then right clicking to get a context menu. In the context menu, I'm selecting 'Set Group as Working' https://imgur.com/J9v0iRy Once you are in the correct group (whether it's the top most group, or a parent group), you can then locate the group that you want to ungroup in the viewport. Or... Using the outliner, select the group you want to ungroup, then right click again for the context menu. This time select, 'Set Camera to Object'. This will center the viewport on the object you want. https://imgur.com/kD1qN23 Now that we have the group located in the viewport, let's select it. To select the object in the viewport, we can either make a marquee selection by left click and holding to drag around the object in the viewport, or we can just simply left click the object in the viewport. Once selected, you can then right click to get a different context menu. In this menu, the 'ungroup' should not be greyed out. Select the 'ungroup' and you should be good to go. ------- NOTES: https://imgur.com/Z4CJsYL Now there maybe a case where you can see a group, but you can't select it or you can't ungroup it. That's most likely because you have 'show all groups' enabled in the toolbar. Make sure it's turned off unless you need to see something in a group (I almost never have it enabled). https://imgur.com/GyoPAm0 There maybe a case where you can't see anything selected in the outliner, or you're not sure what group you're actually in (see the above image). This can even happen when you load the mission for the first time because the mission editor retains the last working group. If this happens, you can easily right click anywhere in the viewport to get a context menu, and select 'Reset Working Group'. This will put your working group as the top most group in the current mission you're editing. Edited August 9, 2021 by Sketch 1

I have taken another look at it and am now able to get at the items I want to remove / modify. Given your stated goal is to remove/modify items in a group, I think we may be able to help you some more It should, after all, be possible to do what you want without going through the trouble of ungrouping your objects and then re-grouping them when you're finished. You state that setting that group as the Working Group works, but that you're still getting issues. Mind sharing what those issues are? 1
DD_Friar Posted August 11, 2021 Author Posted August 11, 2021 I have it sorted now thank you. I now understand the Set Working group "unlocks" the units that make up that group. They can be amended. I then re-set the working group when finished. I am now happy with the process but thank you anyway.
AEthelraedUnraed Posted August 11, 2021 Posted August 11, 2021 Glad to hear it works! Good luck with mission editing, and if you've got some additional questions, let us know!
