Did you enable autorotation? Than of course there is a jump when adding the offset at certain angles... A video might help to better understand what you are seeing.

Bam! You got it, sir.  That was the reason.  I just undid autorotation and now I have smoother tracking, thank you!

@J2_NobiWan

First of all, thank you so much for making this app. I used another solution previously, but your tool excels in user friendliness ?

In case you are still open to adding functionalities: would it be possible to have multiple buttons for the manual rotation left/right? Currently, I can only choose one button and one button only for each functionality.

I currently use 2 buttons on my throttle, which works very well, but I also have a button box that I use and not having to switch when my hand is on that device in a moment where time is of the essence would be a very welcome feature.

FC2 has been purchased btw. Not related to your app, but still ?

That should be doable, @JG1_Greif. Give me a few days... :)

Updated first page:

Update v2.07:

 - fixed GUI font
 - Added option to select up to three buttons L/R for manual rotation.

@JG1_Greif, to use this select "Multiple L/R buttons" in the "Options" Menu.

As always, let me know if I broke something... :)

Gave it a try, it worked as you describe and works great in game as well: both sets of manual L/R view buttons work ?

This gives me much more flexibility, so I'm very happy with this. Many thanks for adding this, and also for adding it so incredibly fast!

VRNecksafer already was a great app, you just made it even better for me (and possibly others) ?

Hello NobiWan, I have used your program in IL2 and its amazing. I know you hear this all the time but thank you so very much for your time and effort in this provision. Makes the game so much more enjoyable.

I was reading through the forums and noticed the version for Index and DCS isn't available yet. I just transitioned to the new DCS 2.7 and its really amazing. Is there anything I can do to help you with this? I am retired, have an Index, discord channel, and all the time in the world. I would be more than happy to be directed by you for data or have you log into my system to collect data if any of that helps.

What ever you need I will be happy to oblige if any of that can help you. I build my own computers and have a lot of flight hours so I'm not completely useless, yet. lol

Thanks again for all the great work sir. You made the game fun for me.

Thanks @Condor060 for your kind words and for your offer to help!

I might come back to that but for now I have great support by two Index users ( @vrFlyer3 and @Nanolab).  The current problem is more that my free time is a bit limited. This will change soon hopefully.

Looks like you have some good fellas helping out. Thanks again for everything you have provided NobiWan. Like I said before, you made the game so much more fun for VR users. I hope you patent your work and sell it to Steam or some other VR provider. I would GLADLY pay for this application be it from Steam or yourself. I think you found the undiscovered nitch in the VR world and I hope you are compensated well for your provision.

Hiya @J2_NobiWan, I wanted to thank you for your work on VR NeckSafer.

This software is amazing (when it works) ?  Strangely, I've only had one successful attempt at being able to use the software in DCS (I don't have IL2)

Every time since, I have been unable to use software as it is intended.

VR NeckSafer Startup, Setup, and Troubleshooting Process:

I use a SteamVR setup HMD utilizing two SteamVR 2.0 Base Stations (not windows mixed reality) and my startup process is as follows:

1.) SteamVR (Normal and Beta) calibrated to be seated only (ie,. In SteamVR I am located directly over the middle of the VR space, and everything (height, position, rotation) are perfectly centered

2.) I completely close SteamVR and every associated program with it buy exiting AND also verifying via Process Lasso.

3.) I run VR NeckSafer (2.07) as admin and as a result, SteamVR is initialized and loaded. (Again, Position in VR space (height, position, rotation) are perfectly centered.

4.) I launch DCS (Open Beta Standalone... ((Not the Steam Version))

5.) Once in DCS, I goto (any instant action scenario that places me in any cockpit in any aircraft on the ground with the engine off)

6.) Once in the cockpit of any aircraft sitting on the ground, I ALT-TAB to VR NeckSafer and perform the following:
      6a) Options-> Game Mode--> Forced Seating

6b) Options -> Position Compensation --> In Seated Mode

6c) In the Calibration section of the main screen, I click on the "Set Reset Button" and then assign the same button that I use to "Recenter VR Headset" in DCS's UI Layer

6d) I do see that the VRNeckSafer.cfg file is created in the same directory of the VRNeckSafer.exe (just to verify that it is working)

7.) I ALT-TAB (or) click back into the DCS Window (DCS Window is now IN focus)
7a) I click my Recenter VR Headset button (which is also the same button assigned to the VR NeckSafer "Reset button")

7b) The VR View in DCS is reset to center

8.) The VR NeckSafer Application window (Upper Top Left) shows "VRNS (0 deg)" in Black (not Grey) colored font
8a) The VR NeckSafer Application window, Calibration section, "HMD Yaw:" information shows 0 (or +/- 1 degree) (ie,. centered and aligned properly with my DCS VR centered position)

9.) I do NOT assign any buttons to the Manual Rotation

10.) I DO click on the Auto Rotation "Enable" checkbox then delete all Rows of ACT, DE, ROT, L/R, FWD until only 1 Row of ACT, DE, ROT, L/R, FWD values remain.
       10a) I change the values in the single remaining row to: 100, 45, 35, 10, 0

11.) I switch back to DCS (DCS Window now in focus) and Once again, "Recenter VR Headset" by pushing the assigned button that is the same for both DCS and VRNeckSafer

11a) As I press the Recenter VR Headset / Reset Button, the VRNeckSafer Application button (seen in the background and behind the DCS main window does Flash Black)

11b) The DCS window cockpit view once again is centered.

12.) I turn my head left or right to the 100 degree trigger point and the VR view places my VR view at 35 degrees aft of 100 BUT.. I am now Below the aircraft and at about 1 foot above the ground.
12a) Turning head left or right does trigger the auto rotation view BUT I am still below the aircraft and now the HMD Yaw: = approximately negative (-130) to (-178) degrees
12b) Pressing the Recenter VR Headset / Reset Button RESETS the HMD YAW to the new (inappropriate -130 to -178 degree LOW and rearward facing VR View)

12c) Pressing the Recenter VR Headset / Reset Button MULTIPLE Times (in quick succession) may rarely return the VR view to the proper COCKPIT VR View facing forward.. This may occur once out of 100 presses of the Recent VR Headset / reset button.

13.) Disabling the Auto Rotation "Enable" Button allows me to Recenter my VR Headset and properly return to the Cockpit VR view facing forward.

13a) This obviously disables the software from performing any Auto Rotation feature

13b) Re-Enabling the Auto Rotation feature and performing any head movement causes the same exact problem that occured in Step 12 through 12b

If you'd like for me to provide any SteamVR data, I can do that if it would help you. For everyone else, if anyone has any tips, ideas, or other solutions known please help ?

Thanks!!!!!

Opencomposite doesn't support the overlay/background interfaces yet that VRNS needs for its functionality.  You could ask the OC developer if he is willing to implement those interfaces in the future...

Thanks @zhousaifu for the detailed report. Problems with VRNS on lighthouse based systems (Index) in DCS are a known issue. Still trying to fix this but it will take time...

Hi @J2_NobiWan

First of all thanks for this awesome idea, it is a game changer.

Unfortunately as a DCS Oculus Quest 2 user I am facing some issues and I am not able to use the application.

To make a long story short actually whenever I use a button or in autorotation mode  DCS does not apply the rotation and instead traslate my body just on top of the canopy.

In order to come back to the center position I have to reset it

Can you support me?

thanks

Hi @Avalon1966

try these steps and settings:

1. Start Oculus

2. Start SteamVR

3. Start VRNS

  a) in VRNS set OPTIONS to default:

    -  App Mode: Overlay

    -  Game Mode: Auto

    -  Position Compensation: when seated

  b) in VRNS set Reset Button to same button as the DCS "recenter VR Headset" button

4. Start DCS in SteamVR mode: "DCS.exe --force_enable_VR --force_steam_VR"

Usually DCS will run on the Rifts and Quests in Oculus mode. VRNS however requires SteamVR mode.

With the parameters above you can force DCS to SteamVR mode.

Unfortunately this comes with a small performance hit so you will loose some FPS.

5. Check: VRNS should show (Mode seated) in the lower left.

6. When sitting in your cockpit and facing forward hit the Reset Button (must be the same for VRNS and DCS) to calibrate everything

That should do the trick.

With the App Mode in "Overlay" you should in theory be able to skip steps 1 and 2, because VRNS will start SteamVR which will start Oculus.

But sometimes that process fails (for example if Steam needs an update) and the VR system gets into an unstable condition. If that happens I recommend a clean reboot.

Safest way is to start everything manually.

Cheers,

Where should I put the above mentioned parameters? I am not sure if I have to put it on steam

I do have really wierd case.

Reverb G2, latest steam (beta) and  wmr.

App is running and tracking,  buttons are clicking. Its just nothing happens with my viewport

Basically very same with autorotation - headset detects yaw, adds rotation ... and nothing happens in game :(

well, you HAVE to use ROOMSCALE STANDING, instead of sitting for this tool to work.

At least with WMR.

S! @J2_NobiWan

Your tool is a game changer (literally ?) and I use it every time I play IL2. You recently were so kind as to add the functionality to make it possible to have multiple buttons for manual left/right rotation, which is incredibly useful, thanks again for adding this.

For the same reason as for the multiple left/right rotation buttons I was wondering if it you would have the time and energy to add the same functionality for the button that resets the view i.e. to make it possible to define multiple buttons to reset the view in game. I have some high priority commands programmed on my button box so having this functionality would allow me to be able to reset the view (which I do quite regularly) while keeping my hand in place instead of having to switch to my HOTAS, searching for the reset button in VR (i.e. feeling) in potentially hectic situations, so that's why this additional functionality would be very useful for me.

I am somewhat hesitant to ask as you are so kind to do this for the community for free, which is incredibly generous already. As such, if you don't have the time and energy or just don't feel like it, I would like to insist that is absolutely fine.

Hi @ftordeur, VRNS is based completely on the functionality provided by the OpenVR/SteamVR API. So, as long as MSFS isn't based on that API I don't see VRNS working with it. On the other hand, I really do not fully understand the relations and interactions of the individual VR environments, so you never know... ;)

I just get an empty zip file when I download the latest v208. Twice.

So then I tried v207 and it sort of works in IL2, but the reset is odd. If my head is turned when I re-center, the new center point is offset from facing forward.

In DCS it is unusable for me, since it just throws my head outside in front / below the cockpit and turns it sideways every time. I can't figure it out.

Vive Pro 2.

Also, is there a way to just have a "check-six" button, that looks 180 degrees behind? While still being able to use the left/right buttons to pan.

Looks like your AV protection (browser or windows) is preventing the download. VRNS was plagued by false AV alerts from the beginning. You should be able to disable the alert for that zip file

The reset behaviour is as intended, just like the normal IL2 "Default VR view": Wherever you piont your head at when resetting becomes the new "forward" direction.

Are you using the "Accumulative" mode and use the reset button to set it back to 0? In that case you have to look forward when pressing it.

Thinking about it, it might be a good idea if I add a separate, dedicated "Accumulative back to 0" button and not use the normal reset button...

I've heard reports that Vive Pro 2 and DCS are working fine together. It's important to press reset once when seated in the cockpit...

Sorry, my bad. Yeah, it was Firefox preventing the contents of that zip file from downloading, but not telling me. No idea why just that version only. Got it now.

Meantime, I just went back to using OVR Advanced Settings (rotations) along with binding my joystick as a virtual Xbox game controller in Steam. Have to launch OVR before SteamVR for it to recognize the stick.

I set up a 4-way hat as follows:

Fwd: Reset view to current default aircraft forward view (i.e. the last view previously set by game VR reset), every time regardless of which way my real head is facing at the time I press it. NOT the same function as game VR reset (I already use VoiceAttack for this, like once a game session maybe).

Aft: Toggle 180 degree instant rotation = perfect 6-check every time, as long as I started at default Fwd view above

Left: Pan left about 90 degrees per second (fine rotation) as long as button is held. Nice to set up a wing-facing view for orbiting a ground target.

Right: Same as above but right.

I'm just used to it working like this on my previous HMD, I think.

NobiWan, I enjoy your solution so much. Right now in DCS until Im in the mood for IL2 again. However, as DCS' snapshot feature is so awful especially getting it to work in VR: Is there a chance you can intergrate also to amplify looking up beside left and right? Thing is, that I often have to look 90 degress up in tight corner fights  -  often for longer periods to see if enemy is moving along canopy. Neck, shoulder and arms are already suffering enough. ;)

Posted (edited)

I've found the fix for my problem which is what Avalon1966 was describing. I don't know if it will help everybody but it might help those with the same setup I have,

DCS standalone and the Reverb G2. I don't have IL2 so I don't know if you might have the same type of configuration.

After resetting my environment in WMR and checking the floor level in the cliff house... plus resetting the setting position in SteamVR I went back into DCS. One thing kept ringing in my head, J2 kept saying to assign the same re-center button on the HOTAS for centering NSVR and DCS. I had already cleared all the setting that made Num5 the re-center button, and since NSVR didn't have the option to use the keyboard to re-center I was confused.

That is until I went into CONTROLS and the UiLayer. I found an item there titled "recenter VR Headset". BINGO. Once I assigned that item and the NSVR reset to the same obscure, out of the way button on the HOTAS I have not had any problems with it. I hit the reset once I am in the cockpit and I haven't had to touch it the rest of the flight.

Yes! I use it everyday to make sustained turns in my Mig19 of check my six in my 190 ?

I just add fixed 90degrees without any fancy special settings.

As for looking up. Do you know a way to get a snap view in DCS that actually work in VR. Because it would do the job for me concerning looking up. I guess you have lots of experience with view controls. Didn’t get it to work with all this numpad insanity of DCS ?

Hi spreckair,

first thing to check is that you have all the files (.exe and .dll's) extracted into the new folder. Next thing is that you need SteamVR installed (not OpenComposite). And then you should double check if your anti virus program is not preventing the execution. Let us know if this helps!

Cheers,

Sorry mate, never used snap views, not even when I was still using TrackIR... Personally I find looking up much easier than looking to the sides since I can lean back my whole body instead of just my head. That depends of the type of chair you are using, of course... ?

oh I see :)

well after 2 prolapsing spinal disk in shoulder area I’m a bit sensitive. (Before VR).  After a longer IL2 FC VR session I had new problems in my left shoulder (was mostly looking left behind). They were pretty strong and even months later I still feel it.
That was the moment I look for a tool like yours. Usually I fly WW2 in DCS or cold war these days. For checking my D9 six, your tool is great. Same for circling in my mig19. But some circles are so long and tight that I have to look 90degreees up for a longer period. Short view up fwd would be no problem. But I’m too scared to look up so straight for so long. Because I lose sight so easily, especially in VR im afraid to make breaks looking up. Guess I need to dig deeper in DCS view system ??
But as I said. Your tool is already sooo much help. Thanks again for this.

btw: you use the exact same profile pic I used in the ROF forums ?
