4K cockpits for Great Battles WWII Planes!!

Recommended Posts

Great to see texture quality being improved, mods like this are much needed but it seems to me that this mod improves textures only where there are already details, making them less blurry, but it won't add any on previously flat textures. This actually increases the gap between the graphic quality of BoBp cockpits and the ones of the previous titles. I hope that at some point in the future someone will find a feasible way to improve older planes to the standard of the new ones. In the meantime, thanks to all the modders working hard for the community.

That's the devs job man, they have to update or I will not buying anymore

Honestly, despite it being a clear issue that i hope to be tackled (I'm talking about both textures and polygons), I'm skeptical that they would go back to restore older assets.

Addeing additional details (when upsizing) in e.g. photography is possible to a limited extent (with A.I. software like Topaz Gigapixel) and even then many photographers are not that keen about it (and/or are even completely against it). In case of "flat textures" how can even an A.I. know what to do with those !?

Indeed, this is precisely why an automated attempt won't work: an AI wouldn't know. I fear that best results would be obtained through manual/"artistic" work, obviously this means much more workload, sadly.

For those of us unsure how long it takes to boil a three-minute egg, could someone please explain exactly which file goes exactly where, including where the "commond texture" file goes?

Thank you in advance. :)

@CanadaOne

For Canada?,

hope it makes sense but let me explain:

Cockpit files

4K Cockpits BOBP\data\graphics\Planes\P51D15\Textures..here are the files

commond texture files

4K Cockpits BOBP\data\graphics\textures\common\  put this one into your mods folder and activate it via JSGME There is nothing else to do!

This is how i did:

1,Download  file 4K cockpits BOS-20200419T112647Z-001 (example)

2, Unzip downloaded file (i have 7 Zip)

3, You see   folder 4K Cockpits BOBP

4, Here are different ac zipped. K-4, G-14....P51D15

5, Unzip them too

6,  Now you have this folder P51D15 (example only for one aircraft, but you know there are 9 other)

7, Inside this folder you have a "data" folder

8, Cut out this "data" folder and put it back into "4K Cockpits BOBP" folder      This is what you see now    4K Cockpits BOBP\data\graphics\Planes\P51D15\Textures

9, Do this with all files.

10, Delete all aircraft folder P51D15 (example for one) ,  these folders must be empty now because you cut out "data" folder

11, Put your  4K Cockpits BOBP folder into you mods folder and activate it.

I know its a little bit of work, but so you can activate the whole folder instead of activating all aircraft seperately

Fell free to ask me, if there is any trouble.

Edit:

I merged all the data folders together in the 4K cockpits folder, ran the command texture mod first in JSGME and then the mod folder and I think it's working. Thank you.

4K Cockpits BOBP\

Sorry but why are you creating a seperate folder structure for this !?

Why not simply UNRAR the many Oyster_KAI downloaded *.RAR files to ...

YOUR-DRIVE:\Program Files (x86)\1C Game Studios\IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles\data

=> the full and correct folder structure is already in the RAR files, ... so why would we use a seperate program and 'install' directory for this !?

e.g.

D:\Program Files (x86)\1C Game Studios\IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles\data\graphics\Planes\A20B\Textures

There will already be '*B.dds' files in those textures folders already, but -normally, unless you already had some 4k pits- no '*c*.dds'

And  most of the 'common' files will get overwritten at :

D:\Program Files (x86)\1C Game Studios\IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles\data\graphics\textures\common

... and -of course- run IL-2 with MODS on !

Am I missing something here ???

Is this not OK Oyster_KAI ???

Please correct me ?

Thanks !

I thought @Yankee_One's BOBP folder is in the JSGME MOD foler?
so he can only overwhrite old files in MOD folder, then install all planes at a time.

in order to avoid someone have a wrong install, maybe I can make a all in one pack

OK, so I take it that when we do not use JSGME at all we can indeed simply UNRAR the archives to out original IL-2 game INSTALL ..\data ... folder structure !???

In that case (not using JSGME) we don't need a seperate folder structure !?

Works for me.

Thanks

Because I am a bear of very little brain, it is kind of how it was explained to me, and by some magic I have figured out how to use the JSGME and I like that I can turn things on and off.

Directly overwhrite the data folder  is no problem, I do this too:)
but remember do not delete custom_photo and XXXXXX_B(normal map file) in texture folder.

Thanks again.

Thought so ... would be strange if it worked for me that way and ... I did not use a JSGME for these MODs

(for 4K custom skins this is also not necessary, and in for custom skins we don't even need MODS on).

Good luck with an even brighter future of these awesome 4K cockpits !

It is a shame that we have to have MODs on to see them as I very rarely fly offline ?     I suppose the problem might be that a person could use a cockpit mod to make it all invisible and get better vision than everyone else.   I can only hope that one day 1C decide to do an official version of 4k cockpits.

That has been my feeling from the very beginning ...

Hopefully, this mod might become officially implemented in the future as the External 4k textures done by other members of this community. Let´s keep our fingers crossed .... in the meantime. :joy:

As I have explained before, 4K external textures are immensely easier to produce and re-create. Cockpits are a lot more complex and as I have explained many times, if someone would re-do them from scratch that is really what my team would like to see since we don't have the resources, time or money. But because it's so much work it's unlikely even if someone or group has the talent. Plus that doesn't include geometry improvements which would really set them off. Right now, this mod largely sharpens textures, which is great and Oyster has the right idea with re-making larger special sections that really need new art not just an upscale. So, I really do like what has been done, not throwing shade at it, but some of you act like we are negligent on how are cockpits are made. Plus many of these cockpits were made years before I took over development. I'll keep watching and see how far this current work it can be taken. Good job Oyster.

And these can be used online in Mods On servers. That's up to the community not us.

I would pay for a ultra texture pack, you could sell it separately, many games do that to

Hi Jason

At this time the work done by the team has been insane (...without forgetting the three factors: resources, time and money), however in order to save time and resources it would be a good option to have the same approach (but official), with the reconstruction of textures via AI / Deep learning.

I am not so sure about that !

Indeed, the results we got from Oyster_KAI are and look fantastic.

However I guess the IL-2 Devs have some kind of tool(s) for these pits and skins etc. that produce the *exact same* result each and every time !?.

It is source material.

However, if they render something (like what we are talking about here) what we regard as improved in some way and they use some kind of fuzzy 'AI' logic tool to get there I guess the community might get furious (as they do at times :-) ) because each time (upgraded versions of-) those tools might produce different results.

I know that the photographic community can get very upset with each upgrade of e.g. Topaz A.I. Gigapixel because they say the newer version did not improve some of their pictures, but made it worse in (some) cases.

Jason and his teams will surely have their (probably many other!) reasons, but I am sure they know why they say it may not happen (at least at this time).

But, in the meantime, lets enjoy this fantastic MOD from the OP !

@Oyster_KAI Would this same technique work for the other texture files? I know most planes have the main skin texture for painting the liveries on the outside. However, they have a separate texture that is low resolution for things like wheels and undercarriage and the cockpit interior of the main model (the cockpit you see from the F2 outside view not the cockpit as seen sitting inside the plane). Would this technique be able to help get those textures less fuzzy as well?

That is indeed yet another BIG improvement ... indeed ... EPIC (not only the kids call it that :-)) !

This new big improvement will almost surely also be applicable for Flying Circus s well as Tank Crew !!!? Would be anazing if, in time, this would also become a reality !

@What VR resolution, maybe too low to notice ???

On my flat-screen 4K (32"+) there is, IMHO, a significant noticeable difference !

Indeed, I know, but maybe not everything and also maybe this technique allows for improving (kind of sharpening) without actual upsizing to a bigger Mpixel file and that way it could be improved nevertheless !??

Do you need to run mods on to use these new improved 4k cockpit textures? Reluctant to use otherwise as all the good multiplayer servers are "mods off" which is a shame ?

Sadly, yes, until the devs integrate this into the main game, it´s no gonna be on any of the better MP servers.

I can't even spot planes online so I am running offline now, until they fix the issue so I can enjoy the 4k cockpit

Look into TC, The Panzer IV texture quality is  apparently better than Tiger, there is room for improvement.
