There are chances of rain, bad weather, hazy fog, early dawn and late dusk brightness (or lack there of), and parts of the mission can be in complete darkness.

When it rains, it's not like previous rain in the game. Now the rain only appears where there's pockets of clouds that support the rain. Therefore, if there's less clouds then there's less rain.

There are also chances of clear and beautiful skies.

Description:

Apologies for this one coming a little late, but there's some sneaky surprises in store for you this in this mission! For this FNF, I've set the time of day to the early mornings of o'dark-thirty. Pilots will begin the mission by fight in the darkness and under cloud cover with searchlights looking for enemy warplanes in nearly every city along the front line. However, as time ticks by and the sun comes up, the bomber boys will no longer have the cover of darkness to protect them. The mission loosely follows the Wild Boars of JG30, as they attempted to find a means to stop RAF night time bombers without the use of radar systems. Don't forget, if you like what we're doing, consider donating to our Patreon, as it keeps FNF and Combat Box going. See you in the skies!

-----

September 1943 - In May 1943, the British acquired a Junkers Ju 88 R-1 night fighter when its crew defected to the Allied side and flew the aircraft to Scotland. The aircraft carried the initial "B/C" form of the UHF-band Lichtenstein radar, so its existence was revealed to the Allies; subsequently, RAF Bomber Command was approved to deploy a new form of window or chaff (aluminum strips) sized to jam the Lichtenstein B/C radar. This brought about the need to deploy new night-fighting methods that no longer relied solely on AI radar until the longer wavelength, VHF-band Lichtenstein SN-2 radar could be perfected and produced for use in German night fighters defending the Reich. To this end, fighter pilots wherever possible sought to identify and intercept enemy bombers by sight. This was to be achieved by acting against the principle of the blackout, and Herrmann proposed that the attacked city was to produce as much light as possible. Being contrary to orthodoxy, this method was resisted by most cities and not enforced. As a substitute, searchlights were used to illuminate the sky.

Using former flying instructors experienced in blind-flying techniques suggested the ideal weather conditions were when a certain lower-level cloud cover prevailed, since then the bombers would be silhouetted against the back-lit clouds and the high-flying German fighters could easily spot their targets. Since the Wilde Sau technique only worked if the lighting was adequate, its application was limited to the immediate metropolitan city areas, as in most cases this was the only place where an assembly of sufficient searchlights was in place. It was therefore essential that the RAF's intended targets were determined quickly.

RAF High Command set a priority list of targets:

  1. Aircraft factories and assembly points
  2. Ball bearing industries
  3. Synthetic fuel plants
  4. Nonferrous (Aluminum) industries
  5. Other war industries

Now it's the pre-dawn in the middle of September... The low clouds could potentially hide planes but in the right lighting conditions... Will the Wilde Sau find their marks or will the RAF bombers get through unscathed?

I didn't know SRS and Discord can play nice together.  I'll get some mappings worked up for that. I've been wondering if CB Discord is busy on those nights when SRS seems dead.

I'm also at the point of being ready to just leave the HUD off.  The text chat annoys me, and Between the HOTAS and/or being in VR, the last thing I want to do is try to 'txt' away in the chat channel to coordinate a dogfight!

Anyway, big Thank You to the Combat Box 'staff' for bringing us these missions every week, and the awesome SRS radio!

@Alonzo and team:

#1 Thank you for your hard and expensive work for keeping the Combat Box server running.

I would like to give you some feedback that you can use or toss out the window and this is a labor of love :) which I an grateful for.

I haven't been playing of late because of the selection of Luftwaffe aircraft are not historic and not immersive enough for me. If you are going for historic/semi historic - do both sides justice.

Example: Operation_Spear_Oct_1944:

The RAF have the correct aircraft for the period (Supermarine Spitfire XIV, Hawker Tempest V, Supermarine Spitfire IX, North American Mitchell III, Hawker Typhoon IB)
The Luftwaffe on the other hand have aircraft dated back to 1942 - this was not the case.

In the future you can use Mike Holm's website for reference https://www.ww2.dk/, just give him credit if you don't mind.

For example: III./JG 26 was operating in the area during Operation Spear and here is what they had available:

image.png.a67fe38a76bbcb48730639457c5a24c8.png

58 G-14s on hand, 47 service ready

II./JG 26 had this available:

image.png.a20f458c7477644ae601952864a80ba6.png

 a mixture of Fw 190A-9s (25) and Fw 189A-8s (2) on hand

There are no late models in service - the Luftwaffe replaced aircraft too - contrary to what misinformation we get from the History channel.

This is the main reason a lot of us Luftwaffe exclusive guys don't fly on Combat Box much anymore. Which sucks for me because the missions are so damn cool!

https://combatbox.net/en/mission/12848/

what are you talking about ?  there is not enough 190A8s and G14s ? out of 19 axis players 14 played multile sorties with thouse airplanes, 3 used 1943 BoK airplanes and 2 dont even have bobp.

Just this guy https://combatbox.net/en/sorties/21332/=DW=_bangat/?tour=43 lost 6 190A8s in 1h of play... LOL

Also missions have early models of airplanes so ppl who dont have later versions have something to play with, there is P-40s, Spit Vbs Huricanes and P-39s available on missions, are they not early opselite models also ?

Does Combat Box actually *want* people to use SRS?  Perhaps you prefer to use Discord and this is why your opening post just makes a passing reference to SRS being available then provides a link to downloading the DCS version.

If you actually want more people in SRS I would suggest you provide a link in your opening post to Jasons thread explaining where to get SRS for IL2 and maybe also provide a link to the INFO part of your own website where you tell people how to use it. in Combat Box.

Uh, yeah we definitely want people to use SRS. I've updated the first post to be clearer about that. I didn't actually realize we had such old info there.

If it looks like I've made a mistake please just point that out. The passive-aggressive thing can be a bit counter productive. We're all on the same side here, for gaming ?

Sorry.  I was frustrated after downloading and installing the DCS version only to find it was the wrong one.  Apologies again.

Hi! There is a bug in the website that generates the invalid invite links. You can fix it by manually inserting "combatbox.net" after "http://", like so:

http://combatbox.net/en/squad/join/256/aUEf9Q

Edit: The bug should be fixed now.

Description:

Looking to get your level bombing action in? Want to fly the best planes and destroy your enemies? Never had the chance to use the fabled Me262? Well now you can do all of that thanks to this week's FNF designed by @Barnacles! The mission has it all. Players will be able to fly and fight against multiple Me262s! Level bombing pilots will have picture perfect targets in Tilburg and Koln with very light scatter clouds. Pilots will be able to use their best fighter craft from the Dora to the Lighting to the Tempest in this action packed mission. This is Barn's third mission to FNF and I'm excited to try it out.

Additionally, I want to thank our current Patreons! That's everyone in this Discord with an orange name. Without you guys, there's no way Combat Box would be running. Thank you immensely! Briefing:

8 February 1945 - This mission is based on the situation running up to Operation Varsity (24 March 1945) where Allied forces started advancing towards the Rhine in anticipation of moving the front towards Berlin.

Records are patchy, but Staffeln of I. and II./KG 51, of Kampfgeschwader 51 "Edelweiss" (KG 51) (Battle Wing 51), are recorded operating Me 262 A-2s in the ground attack role from airbases in the area. Though German records are lost, Allied intelligence reports show that there were regular jet operations from Essen Mulheim and Rhine-Hopsten airbases, although the Luftwaffe only seemed to commit to jet operations when the threat of fighter-bomber raids were low. Even then, they only managed a handful of sorties on the days when they could operate, with 6 airframes being noted as the most deployable in the records available.

Briefing:

November 1943 - German and Allied artillery have taken up positions to either push or defend their section of the combat area. Overhead, P51b and Spitfires fight Fw190s for control of the skies. And whoever owns the skies, sends in bomber forces to decimate the enemy ground forces in that section. Each side is making their final pushes before the winter snow sets in.

The war has become a big machine that is being assembled and disassembled by both sides as the front lines ebb and flow each passing minute. Troops and pilots are taking the brunt of the war machine, as each day a friend, son, brother, or father is killed in a meaningless attempt at grabbing more land for their side. Will the war end by Christmas? Will the coming snow force an unofficial stalemate? Will winter supplies come in to the front lines before snowfall? Only time will tell.

Firstly, Love your server, you're doing a great job!

Since this latest update, I'm unable to get my SRS to connect automatically to your server. So, I wondering if this was a change on your end?, ie you have disabled the auto connect feature, or has my setup has gotten mucked up somehow.(the more likely problem)

Basically wondering if others are having issues auto connecting...

Thanks.

Cheers,

M.

We have not changed anything with SRS. 99% of the time, when a player can not connect to SRS automatically it's one of two things:

1) Their installation isn't correct. Please install the latest version here: https://github.com/ciribob/IL2-SimpleRadioStandalone/releases/latest

2) They have auto connect prompt ON. Meaning, when you connect to a new server, SRS will prompt you to say, "Hey are you sure you want to switch to this new server?" You then have to leave the game, go to SRS and say "Yes, I'm okay with switching to this new server." You are probably not completing that step and wondering why you're not auto connecting to Combat Box (after playing on another server). Turning this off will fix that problem.

image.thumb.png.ca914d744e57a2727add70b6fcff391f.png

Turn Auto Connect Prompt off to stop the message from coming up when you switch to a new SRS server.

I did a search but got several hundred results.  Because combat box and sketch had strong memories (I was much more active 2 years ago) I chose this one... I am sorry these are newbiw questions but I am swamped by the generic earch for "Discord"

 - Is there an official IL-2 Discord?

 - Is there a Combat Box/ Sketch Discord? If so, how is wifi in your van down by the river?  :)

I got the email today about the new IL-2 patch and a huge wave of "why did i ever stop" hit me hard.

COMBAT BOX VEGAS RETREAT 2022

Date/Time: August, 12th and August 13th
Server: In Real Life at Las Vegas, Nevada at the Luxor Hotel

It's official... We're three years old. Can you believe it? We started Combat Box back in April 2nd, 2019 and have been committed to making great experiences and develop an ongoing community of like-minded fliers. We started with a computer upgrade in the basement of @Alonzo's house. The computer was used for Minecraft of all things... Now-a-days, we have two dedicated machines running the website, the SRS clients, the SRS bot, and of course our two servers - the Dogfight Training server and the Main Combat Box server.  I remember the first set of maps we had, one in particular was the D-Day invasion, and while it had many performance issues - it was the hallmark of greater things to come. Now we're hovering over 40 maps, each with their unique flavor! Crazy! Some of my favorites include Mitchel's Men, A Bridge too Far, and Operation Frantic.

Are we done now? Not in the slightest! We have really big plans coming up, that we've been working on behind the scenes. We still have Friday Night Flights scheduled each week, where players fly a completely new mission! And we have some other events in store too - racing, dogfights, team deathmatch, and more.

I want to thank everyone who is a part of this community, the admin team, and our Patreon supporters. Without you guys, there's no way we would be as successful as we are. Here's to another three years of great success!

So, how do we celebrate this amazing success? By going to Vegas of course!! Yes, I said it... Vegas baby! We're hosting a community retreat on Friday, August 12th, 2022 and Saturday, August 13th, 2022 in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Luxor Hotel. After three years, it's time to meet everyone's pretty faces in person. Come join me, and the community by drinking, socializing, gambling, hanging out, and just relaxing with like-minded nerds and their families. If you have additional questions, ask in the Combat Box Discord's general channel. You can get more information on this retreat by going here -> Combat Box Vegas Retreat 2022

Maybe we'll meet @Jason_Williams???

Hope that helps pin the problem down.

Please join us in just over an hour to commemorate the D-Day landings, with a special play-through of our "Operation Neptune" mission (not seen on the live server for over 2 years now!). This is our interpretation of the events of D-Day and uses the beautiful northern coastline of the Kuban peninsula to re-enact the landings at Omaha, Gold and Utah beaches.

Hi Alonzo,

I don't know if this is a bug, but... I was playing Operation Market Garden yesterday, with SRS text-to-voice on. I was flying on the German side. Every time a voice alert came on the radio for Flak sector 3 being under attack, the simultaneous on-screen message mentioned Flak sector 2. As I was flying right over sector 2 at the time, I could see that there was no attack going on. Whereas the voice alert about sector 3 mentioned a grid coordinate, which makes me think it was the correct one.

This happened repeatedly, and it seemed to involve only Sectors 2 and 3. I'm wondering if there has been a mix-up in the mission coding, so that the two Flak sectors have become mixed up.

Cheers.

May occur sometimes - just go into your games directory, then the data folder where you will find the multiplayer folder. Here you go into the
dogfight folder - now you can delete the Alonzo folder. After this, just run your game and select the Combat Box server and connect. All necessary
files and folders will be downloaded again.

Thank you, Therion.  When I tried again, it was a different map and it seemed to work OK this time (I think no download was required).  I will keep your method in mind should it happen again.

It happened again today; deleting the "alonzo" sub-folder did not fix the problem.  It just seems to hang in the download process.  I waited a full two minutes and nothing happened.   I cannot cancel it, and the only option I have is to end the il-2.exe with Task Manager.    I checked and the "alonzo" folder has not been recreated.

I love Combat Box; it's a terrific experience with SRS so I hope the problem gets sorted.   The population of the server went from 20+ to less than 9 players while I was trying to get in.   I was able to get into the Finnish War server no problem, including downloading files at the start of the connect process.   I'll try again after the map changes - I assume the server reboots when a map changes?

Yeah ?

That's the type of server I was looking for ?

Of course the majority is flying single engine fighters BUT there are a lot of oportunitys for twomot Bombers and fighters too !

Not a big deal, but the user posted here below was extremely rude in the last minutes of the FNF after a good game. I was speaking in the chat seeing if anyone wanted to jump on enigmas cold war server and this guys telling me to fuck off and stfu like some teenager. Not much appreciated. Just being completely rude and disrespectful for no reason at all.

I love when I see people trying to tell people to shut up. I always think, "Or what?" They gonna do nothing and just trying to sound big. Its just hilarious.
