Lennard2612 Posted December 28, 2024 Author Posted December 28, 2024 (edited) The Seafire skins inspired me to create some "what-if" skins. So based on some alternate reality: As the performance of the Seafires remained inadequate and accidents during carrier operations kept rising the Fleet Air Arm was unsatisfied. With the Hellcat and Corsairs not available in numbers the FAA was therefore looking for an alternative carrier fighter. The performance of the Mustang II and the recent Mustang III was improving and with the wider landing gear this seemed to be a more suitable aircraft. Therefore, in early 1943 carrier tests where carried for the FAA on the HMS Illustrious with a modified P-51C with arrestor hook and reinforced landing gear. After thorough testing the results were found acceptable and an order was given to North American. These new planes would be based on the P-51D or Mustang Mk.IV and called Seahorse Mk. IV in FAA service. Shortly after the order from the Royal Navy the US Navy also placed a small order for deployment on USS Yorktown. In USN service it would be designated as FJ-1 Seahorse. - Link to actual carrier testing performed by the US Navy (and reasons given why this never became reality). Seahorse Mk. III FB126 Skin of the Prototype Seahorse, a modified Mustang Mk. III FB126 flown from HMS Illustrious in the Clyde in early 1943. Link to download Seahorse Mk. III FB694 Skin of the Seahorse Mk. Lennard2612 Posted December 28, 2024 Author Posted December 28, 2024 The Seafire and Seahorse skins inspired me to create more "what-if" skins. Now based on this alternate reality: As the performance of the Seafires remained inadequate and accidents during carrier operations kept rising the Fleet Air Arm was unsatisfied. And with the Hellcat and Corsairs not available in numbers the FAA was therefore looking for an alternative carrier fighter bomber. The performance of the Typhoon Mk. Ib was not left unnoticed to the Royal Navy. Altough there were concerns on the engine reliability, in early 1944 carrier tests where carried for the FAA on the HMS Illustrious with a modified Typhoon Mk. Ib with arrestor hook and reinforced tail section. After thorough testing the results were found acceptable and an order was given to Hawker. These new planes would however be based on the Hawker Tempest Mk. V and called Sea Tempest Mk. V in FAA service. Sea Tempest Mk. V PR347 Skin of Sea Tempest Mk. kraut1 Posted December 29, 2024 Posted December 29, 2024 (edited) Interesting ideas and skins. Only for information if you want to create missions / campaigns (Sorry maybe you already know this): -Concerning Netherland Air Units / Operations @Heliopause supplies us with detailed historical informations: -Our Kuban map looks a little bit like New Guinea or Borneo / Indonesia, so there are already some skin packs and mod packs existing. -unlabeled Kuban Map by @Off_Winters https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/piflkidp7caj5yl4eui37/Kuban-unlabeled-GUI-map-by_Off_Winters-v01.zip?rlkey=12w6yo59vch9qelef9agzv4mn&st=qzlxsttu&dl=0 Off_Winters has worked really hard to remove hundreds of russian labels manually! This map is a great basis to create other Kuban based GUI maps by adding new labels with GIMP. Small hint: by using only the medium detail level you have only to add each label 1 times. IL-2 GB Pacific Link Collection: https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/89042-il2gb-pacific-current-status/ -If you want to fight as a pilot from Netherland together with the RAAF, USAAC you could use the adapted EMG with your skins for easy and quick mission creation: Edited December 29, 2024 by kraut1 2
