Confirm rearm/repair/refuel on upon spawning on field.

There is a repair bug in the game so on initial spawn pilots should look for the repair techno chat icon on right of screen.  If none appears, leave server and rejoin the server to correct this.  Be aware that if this occurs in the first 15 minutes of mission, you will likely not be able to rejoin for that period of time.  Thereafter it should not be a problem.

Week 1 - We've confirmed that there was a mission logic error preventing Entente from completing their Contact Patrol that was on station near Lens.   This means that the result mutually agreed by Entente and Central Commanders is

1 Entente
0 Central

Week 2 - Fierce fighting around Lens dominated everyones attention this week.   Elsewhere, it seems that certain targets were reinforced (actually the objects used didn't have ability to show damage in game leading to repeated attacks on some of them) and pontoon bridges had invisible spans (actually they probably need more than 1 span to be destroyed to stop vehicles).   Additional glitches causing salients to not disappear once ground forces were destroyed as well as the "about face" apparent retreat of Entente forces in the face of certain victory when a supply train arrived for them (tea and crumpets anyone?) required some discussions post mission.

Commanders from each side convened and agreed that Entente had captured the southern ground objective and had held it at the end of the mission for +2 points.  Additionally Entente had attained the ground objective in Arras for +1 for a total of +3 points.  Unfortunately while the mission logic issues negatively impacted Central significantly, it was not possible to quantify those impacts based on other performance factors, so no adjustment for Central was possible.

A forensic audit of mission logs lead by J5_Matthias and attended and discussed with Mueller and myself confirmed the above.

3 Entente
0 Central

Easter Break - no missions April 16th

Week 3 - April 23rd

3 Entente
2 Central

NOTE:  parser shows 4 points for Entente for this mission but one point shown was coded to confirm completion of Spy Pickup.  Spy Pickup is not eligible for points.

Week 4 -

6 Entente
0 Central

Final Outcome - must outscore opponent by more than two points (3 points or more) to win.

13 Entente
  2 Central

4/06/22 Notice to Pilots

News Along the Trenches:   Rumors are that there are spies and saboteurs suspected to be active on both sides of the lines!  They say we are flying late afternoon/evening missions this week!  4:30pm - 8:30pm with sunset sometime after 7:30.

Rumors of an all-red Fokker Dr.I officially are unconfirmed due to the darkness.

Changes being made for next weeks mission to reduce server load are removal of the following:
2 refuel/resupply points on each side

1 artillery position from each strong point
2 heavy bombers from each side (from 5 to 3)

Look forward to another immersive and dynamic mission next week!  If you haven't already, please be sure to sign up on your teams weekly sign-in to let them know if you are flying.

3/6/22  Notice to Pilots

After discussing the gravity of current events in Europe, Jasta 5 has decided to continue to plan for this years twelfth annual spring campaign.  This community is built around a game which is a distraction from real world events and its members, our friends and yours, all represent cultures and nationalities from across the world.   Our hope is that this campaign will continue to bring all of us together and in doing so, contribute to a more tolerant and closely connected world that makes war like the one we recreate online and the those that are currently ongoing around the world more difficult to wage against one another.

This years campaign mission is being written by J5_Mueller.   J5_Adam, Kurtz28, IRFC_Artun, and 103_Larner  are contributing in the researching of historical unit locations and producing historical paints that will be added to HSD ahead of this years event.

The dates for this years event will be:
Saturday April 2, 9, 23, 30 from 1700-2100 GMT (correct to your local time zone).  Time may adjust slightly.
There will be no mission Easter weekend April 16.

This will be one of the most dynamic WWI  multiplayer campaigns ever (both RoF and Flying Circus).  There will be a moving front in game, logistical supply effects for supply targets.  The intention is that each week the map will begin where the map left off the previous mission.  We look forward to Handley Page and Gotha high-altitude bombing targets.  More details about the structure of the missions and plane sets etc. will be forthcoming shortly.  Follow this thread to be automatically notified when information here is updated

For the interim however, we ask that pilots indicate their interest in participating in this years event and which side they prefer by responding to the poll here.

Good choice. I likely won't be able to participate myself, but I'm sure my J2 Kameraden will appreciate it.

(OTOH, it is Bloody April. Maybe I do deserve a break...)

Thanks to community members, Kurtz28, IRFC=Artun, 103_Larner and J5_Adam we are able to bring you a completely historical skin set this year with aircraft and squadron paints done accurately for the participants of this period in the war, and yes that means the Baron and his flying circus with all their color will be in the air along with Capt. Roy Brown and his flight of Camels. The plane set areas of action and skins and squadrons were all extensively researched for months to provide the most accurate recreation of the events of April 1918 that we are able to provide with the assets available.

Does that mean I won't get to see everyone's colorful personal skins in action? I did take pleasure in recognizing pilots' individual skins from both sides and talking with them after the battles.

Correct, skins will be locked and no personal skins will be used, but the parser and any recording should still reveal who you were fighting against and i agree, i enjoy the personal skins in the Flugpark as well,  but opted for a more historical approach for this campaign.

Thank you for posting this! The situation in Europe is difficult to navigate and each squadron has to do what it believes to be right in these trying times. I'm sure we all hope for it to end very soon! In the meantime, I'm excited to see the heights that this year's Bloody April flies to!

Personally, I can't guarantee every weekend in April and I usually can only fly for around 2 hours at a time, but I certainly look forward to participating when I can. ?

Interesting, I don't think I've ever flown with that setting before (unless it's been active on Flugpark without me noticing xD ). Anything in particular to look out for?

Warm the engine before flying, otherwise it will fail on t/o.

Yes sorry Herr Spyboy , the skin packs are called April 1918 Entente and April 1918 Central, try to update skins for the plane set of the mission ie DR1,Pflaz,Alby,Halby and au version ,Dfw,Camel,Se5,Dolphin,Bristol f2 and 3, DH4, individually to be assured you have all skins in the mission, the skins packs will be updated between now and the campaign, to include No.19, No.56,No.57 and No.64 squadrons for the Entente and a few more Central skins that are scenario appropriate, planes will be returned upon landing at home airfield but will not respawn if ditched or destroyed, almost every aircraft has a unique skin thanks to the dedicated skinners working behind the scenes to help make this as true a recreation as is possible.

The rearm-truck at La Brayelle was not rearming nor repairing or refueling for me while AFP5_Klopstick did get ground-support. According to Daedallus it was because I did not tip the ground-crew. That is true. But I decided to mention it to you anyway. I was flying a DR.1 and later an Albie. Klopstick flew the Gotha.

Yeah, this also seemed to happen on the Entente side as well sometimes. Every once in a while, someone would try to repair/rearm/refuel at an airfield and it wouldn't work. To my knowledge, this is a bug in the game, not the map. Other people are able to RRR at the same airfield at the same time. Sometimes the victim was able to RRR after taking off again and flying to another airfield, other times the game had to be restarted for repairs to work at all.

Salute gents, just for clarification because I know it's been a matter of confusion in the past.  In the current rules, it reads "15 minute re-fly".  As I understand it, this means only you cannot takeoff and fly twice in 15min correct?  For example, you spawn on the field, crack the prop on takeoff, you can't fly again for 15min.  If you takeoff, fly a sortie and land successfully, you can go again immediately, correct? Thx in advance!

That's correct.  There is weird thing at the beginning after you first take off in the beginning of the mission.  If you prang or for whatever other reason need to respawn, you can't for the first 15 mins of the mission.  IN ADDITION, there is a 15 min wait for captured/killed.  In your example, if you take off and land you can take off again, as long as you don't exit mission (don't exit mission because you'll lose a very valuable plane out of inventory!  Always rearm/repair/refuel and take off in the same plane again).  The limited plane inventory is why the logistical targets (fuel depots, train/convoy delivering fuel/parts/etc.) are significant to defend (and destroy).

So just to clarify on repairs, there is a repair bug in the game so on initial spawn pilots should look for the repair icon otherwise they can leave and rejoin the server to correct this.

Kudos and appreciation to J5 and @J5_Mueller for hosting this campaign. Such a step forward in terms of immersion and mission making creativity when compared to recent years. Naturally, there are always things that go wrong when the scripts are so ambitious, but the concepts were right on the money. Thanks to the J5 leadership for letting us run wild with our historical skins idea. ?

To the Central Team- we salute you! Given the obstacles in your way, you handled yourselves valiantly and put up 4 weeks of solid fighting. We look forward to the next one!

It was my first time playing Bloody April and it was an honour for me. I really like the concept with moving targets and start with cold engines, also the refuel/rearm mechanic.

Thanks for the effort create all this!!

Negative: Sadly most time I played the blue side was outnumbered, we tried our best to resist but maybe in the future find a way to balance the number of players before the mission starts. Otherwise just translate: „viel Feind viel Ehr‘“ ?

Really not amused I was about to make the experience getting chute killed under this conditions. ??
I not expect this on a Flying Circus/Flugpark Server and we should take care this not getting business as usual here.

But that only affects one opponent!

To the rest of the red team:

It makes us sweat but it was nice to see your well organised attacks and great skills and the good tactical concept you followed ???
I let AC/DC speak for me:

We salute you!

I’d live to give a big “THANK YOU” to all involved. Not only those at the top, who organised the event, but to all the pilots involved. Without all those that took part, then these type of events could never happen. Win or loose a fight is only part of the bigger picture. The ups and downs are one of things that makes it so rewarding. Congratulations all.

I had a lot of fun with this campaign. There were some incredibly immersive moments of flying. Wee 1, I was assigned to drop off the spy in the night while other scout pilots executed raids on the front line airfields.

After navigating a busy airfield to take off into the darkness and watching the other planes vanish, I crossed the lines high enough to safely avoid trees in the dark, but no more. I was constantly on the alert for enemy planes who might spot me coming in. During this I saw a stream of tracers in the distance behind me: one of our raids was hitting an airfield with glowing tracers spattering off the ground and ricocheting into the sky. Then the airfield started shooting back: red and yellow tracers flying the same path but opposite directions. For a moment a small part of the sky was lit up brilliantly, then it was over. In the far distance, another part of the war had just happened according to the plan we'd built over the last week, but I wouldn't hear if it actually worked until I got home again. I just had to carry on and hope they hit the target and escaped safely.

A short while later, only a few minutes from the designated spy drop-off, I heard another engine noise, different from my own. Looking around, I caught a momentary glimpse of another plane, I think it was a Pfalz DIII. In the darkness, it was impossible to be sure. I dropped to the deck, thankful my gunner didn't open up and give me away. The spy drop-off was mostly uneventful, although the bonfires to help me find the airfield were very cool. I spent the rest of the flight behind the lines searching for the fuel dump and other targets.

Week 3 I was assigned to pick up the spy (we forgot to pick him up Week 2). This time the mission was during full daylight, so there was no way to hide in cover of darkness. Things started well enough, with an uneventful crossing south of Arras to avoid enemy airfields. I was fired on by a distant Flaming Onion that barely missed me. The random burst of tracers and exploding shells forced me to drop down under a hill to get out of sight since trees don't block line-of-sight for AI and AA guns. I managed to navigate to the spy airfield, which is no easy feat when you're under treetop height and can't see cities and forests and roads. On my arrival, I saw several planes south of the airfield at about the same time as the bonfires were lit up to mark the airfield for me. Unfortunately, this also marked the airfield for anyone else nearby, like those planes just a bit to the south. Gotta land safely, pick up the spy, and escape before those planes notice me and chase me down. Settle in for a fast landing, but the planes aren't in profile anymore, they are heading either towards or away from me.  Slight bounce, but not bad, come to a halt. Where's the spy? Nothing yet. Turn off the engine, maybe that's what he's waiting on. There he is! Get in! glance back tot he south: the planes are a bit bigger. Start the engine, full throttle and tweak mixture, then push the nose down to get the tail up and start a fast takeoff roll. Wheels up, planes are higher than me and still closing from 10 o'clock. I'm above the trees now, time to turn north and extend away, relying on my engine for safety. Check back and the wings have an even span, but Albs and D7's have bigger top wings? That's a Camel coming in! and an SE5! There's not supposed to be any friendlies back here, but holy shit I'm safe now! I almost crashed the landing, almost cracked the prop on takeoff, almost had a heart attack while trying to escape. The sudden relief was intense. The rest of the flight back to the lines with 2 camels and an SE5 was spent calming down and getting returning to a sense of normalcy. The SE5 stayed with me all the way to an airfield. Turns out I'd gotten lost and went to the wrong airfield. Once on the ground, I had to call up Mueller and ask for directions! Even once I learned where to return the spy to, I still drifted off course and had to search around for a bit before I saw another SE5 heading tot he front and followed an opposite course to get to the field and deliver the spy.

Asides from the spy pickup and a contact patrol, I spent most of Week 3 and all of Week 4 on the ground managing the various flights, receiving reports, and then pointing them at various objectives that needed attention. Kotori did that job Week 1, and Week 2 was done by KingoftheDingoes. Sitting in the HQ is a very different experience to flying and fighting. With no reports to go on, it can be very boring. Sometimes reports are less than helpful: "I got into a dogfight in this area. I put bullets into an enemy but then got shot down." Sometimes reports are very useful: "Spotted a flight of 2 scouts and 2 two-seaters near this location, heading that direction at some altitude. We engaged and shot down a two-seater and a scout, the other two were driven off with damage. I was shot down and the other two in my flight are damaged and returning for repairs." Reports from the recon planes about a giant hangar in the back area and of a particularly fancy house spawned rumors of a zeppelin in the area and a visiting VIP. Turns out one of these was the Paris Gun and the other was an enthusiastically decorated chateau inhabited by the pilots of Jagdgruppe 2. During week 3 I got a very concerning report that our entire flight covering the southern sector had been shot down by a large hostile force which continued on to Amiens. Worse, I had no spare pilots to send, everyone else was on other missions and had not reported back. The next week we held back a flight specifically for cases like this, and I sent our reserve flight down south after reports of a large push down there. This was followed up by a report 5-10 minutes later that the middle sector lost a train heading to Lens and an unknown industrial facility on the outskirts of Arras was being bombed, and yet I had just sent the reserves to a different location! Well, sometimes you gotta live with your decisions and hope the pilots in the air can make do. I also recieved reports from other flights that attacked front line airfields in an attempt to cut off and prevent repair and refueling near the battle zones. Everything was marked off on a map I'd printed off to track the progress of the battle,  which helped . It's a sort of manual implementation of the Air Marshal, except that I wasn't connected to the server and had to rely on reports from players.

After each week, pilots posted After Action Reports in a specific section of the discord to allow us to try and figure out the tactics and strategies of our opponents. Some read straight out of the history books, while others described challenging fights before getting shot down. We also noticed a few bugs and how to work through them. These AARs were used as a basis for recommending commendations to pilots for actions vital to team success or which demonstrated exceptional skill.

Here is a video of my experience flying Week 3. It's a bit slower pace than some of the combat-heavy replays I've seen from the campaign, but still some interesting stuff. That's because this is mostly about the experience of flying some of the scenario-based missions. There were several moments that really got my hackles up thinking I was about to blow the critical spy recovery mission, but I made it through. I also did a contact patrol, an attack on a train, and attempt to attack an AA gun that turned into a failed defense of our tanks.

I also have Kotori participating in the attack on the Paris Gun with the F.Circus boys, also during Week 3. After some minor confusion over the planes and mission to be flown, the flight got off all right. On the way over, he spotted a pair of Gothas on the deck and was tempted to attack. However, the objective was more important. The attack on the Paris Gun suffered several casualties before they destroyed it and moved on to scouting the back likes. There's some stunning sights of the formation of SE5's together in the clouds.
