Can't see gunsight in Bf 109 F4

I'm new to IL2 BOS.

I have no problem seeing the gunsight in the Yak1 and other planes I tried.

However, in the Bf109 F4, I can't see the gunsight. I realized that my head is much too low. I tried to use page up / down, but nothing change.

FYI, I'm using headtracking.

Is there a way to fix the too low position of the pilot?

Its offset to the right. You are supposed to look through it with your right eye only. Like a red-dot sight for example. Obviously this doesnt work on a 2d screen.

Default F10 should be to save your current view. So move your view to the gunsight and then press F10 to save this view as default.

@J2_Oelmann yes, I know it's offset to the right and that I have to slightly lean to the right to properly see the gunsight (at least, that's how I do when playing the Bf109 with other sims)

@216th_Jordan Thanks for the hint about using F10 for saving the default view! I'll test that, but how can I move my head up? Page up / Page down were not working for me.

I am not sure if you will be able to use PageUp and PageDown with headtracking, maybe you are "cenetering" your headtracking view incorrectly?

Hi.

First  check the key bindings for the pilot head movement in game. Be sure they are the same keys you are trying to use. And that this keys are not in conflict with other function... if so, they will show an orange icon, you can hover your mouse over to see whats the other function asigned to that key.

On the other hand, look arround and check what functions your tracking software has, and wich keys you shoud use.

As far as I know, you CANT use pg Up and Pg Down to adjust the head position while TrackIr is working, probabaly your traking software is the same. You can either PAUSE the tracking software, adjust the view and save it with F10, or you can start the game without the traking software, adjust it, and later start the game with the tracking software on.

Every plane has is "default centered" head position, that you can adjust this way.

On the other hand you can leave the default view position as it is, and adjust your IRL position, to compensate for what you need, re center the tracking software and this will make your IRL neutral position as if you where leaning or puting your head up/down.

I wouldnt do that last option,at least with trackIR, because every time you have any kind of interference issue,or if  your view drifts, or even if you change planes, you need to "find" this new IRL head position so it compensates what is not set up properly in game. And also, most people I know use some kind of "curve" on their trackIR setings so the movement near the center (looking straight ahead, with head centered) is damped/slowed, and when looking/moving arround, the movement is multiplied, so you can look at your six. This means that if you "center" your traking while leaning to one side/looking to one side to compensate, when you go back to your natural position you will be looking through the sight, but your ingame movement will be multiplied instead of damped, making the whole sensitivity setings in your traking software a bit useless...

TL:DR

Check il2 and tracking software needed keybindings.

Pause/turn off traking software.

Set desired head position, on each plane and save as default.

Un pause/turn on tracking software and test results.

You cannot use pageUp/Down when using headtracking. Either use headtracking to move the head in the correct location and save or disable headtracking and move to the position with page (etc.) Keys, then save.

Be careful playing with the F10 view as it can REALLY screw you up if you use TIR and its not easy to return it to normal. I ended up copying over my settings from Steam to get it back and removed the damn F10 binding! If you fly DCS you do not want that key bound in IL2!

Can I make a suggestion:

Move your head into position using your head tracker. (Move it so you can see your gunsight)
Pause the tracking to keep your head still.

use pg-up pg-down etc for any fine tuning movements

Press f9 & f10 to “freeze frame” and lock your head tracking in position

This will now be your default head position and you should now always see the gunsight.

@216th_Jordan & @Tipsi, thanks! While not having headtracking active, I managed to move my head up and align it with the gunsight, then save this default view with F10. It seems to be fine with headtracking active too now.

@GPatricks  thanks for the warning! indeed, coming from DCS, I probably pushed F10 a couple of times, thinking it would display the map. As you suggest it, I'll remove this binding.

So, if F10 creates a new default view, what does F9 do? and is there a binding to restore the default view to its "factory" setting?

dont think there is a binding to reset it - but in your game data directory the LuaScripts directory holds your views. In there is a backup directory. You can either COPY the relevant one out of backup or just delete the one in LuaScripts and game will reload it for you (not sure if this works for steam as well)

F9 freezes TiR(pauses better description) your head tracking. So you freeze your head in the look ahead position then adjust your head with keys then save with F10

In VR, there is also some kind of "Center view" button, but I do not know if that also applies to non-VR head tracking. On my install, it's bound to numpad 5, but I'm not sure if that's a default binding or if I manually bound it.

When starting a flight, I always pause the game, close my eyes and orient my head towards what feels like straight forward, then press numpad 5 and open my eyes again. That way my head is in the right place in front of the visor and looking in the right direction.

What I strongly suggest is disable TIR (same goes with VR) and go through each plane, setting up the default head position.

This is especially worth doing in VR because in many of the planes (especially FC planes) the default position is too far back and it's also aligned with the gunsight which in any plane with an offest gunsight means you'll be sitting off centre.

It helps to reassign the “snap view save” from F10 to something like Alt+F10 so you won’t accidentally reset them.
