chiliwili69 Posted June 4, 2021 Posted June 4, 2021 (edited) Hey!! I just was reading your posts and just checked my email and just 1 hour ago I recieved an email from HTC saying the device has been sent through UPS. The estimated delivery is wednesday 9th in the evening. I made my order on 11th-May. Let´s see. One thing I don´t know is if I will be able to do the setup without controllers. With the VivePro, Pimax5K+ and Index I didn´t need them, but let´s see with the VP2. Edited June 4, 2021 by chiliwili69
dburne Posted June 4, 2021 Posted June 4, 2021 (edited) Just checked again and mine still says waiting for fulfillment. Keeping fingers crossed hoping it will ship today. Edit: Still nothing, waiting for fulfillment. Perhaps won't ship till next week. Guess I should have waited and ordered from an e-tailer rather than pre-ordering with HTC, seems some are getting them faster that way. Edited June 4, 2021 by dburne
slikslik Posted June 5, 2021 Posted June 5, 2021 One question...Assuming we, the owners of the 8kx, have it all set up perfectly, is this the 8kx killer? I'm interested in buying the Pro 2, but that 120 FOV tells me there will still be a binocular effect when in a flight sim. What say you? Flight simmer input is especially appreciated....take care all...Eddie.
mattswe Posted June 6, 2021 Posted June 6, 2021 I'm very interested in a comparison with the vive pro 1, since that is what I use now. Is the glare (god rays) similar to the vive pro 1 (which is really bad on that regard)?
ICDP Posted June 6, 2021 Posted June 6, 2021 (edited) Yes is the quick answer. I remember trying the Index and hating it because of the god rays. I have an 8KX that has only limited god rays but poor glare and the colours aren't great. So a VP2 will be better in some areas and worse in others and I will try it and return it if it doesn't work out. Apologies but should clarify that glare is the glow of the LCD and more like lightbleed that shows in dark scenes (even without contrast). God rays are the searchlight beams that show up in high contrast scenes. So Half life Alyx in an 8KX and my older G1 looked like I was in a grey mist in low contrast dark areas. IMO the 8KX can't match the Vive Pro 2 in anything except for FOV. So, as hard as this sounds, but I say this as an early KS for 5K+ and 8KX, and I really wanted the 8KX to work properly so much... It doesn't match the Vive Pro 2 imo.

I'm getting more and more interested in this headset. At 120 FOV, is there still that binocular effect? I had the Rift S, and it really was like looking through binoculars. Thanks for your input SCG...take care....Eddie.
dburne Posted June 6, 2021 Posted June 6, 2021 Received my Kiwi VR Face Pad Replacement Kit. Now just waiting on the headset to put it on - c'mon HTC!
SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted June 7, 2021 Posted June 7, 2021 (edited) Guys, make sure to set Display Settings in the Vive Console by yourselves (Ultra). Then, after restarting SteamVR, check the video settings in there - they default to various resolutions there depending on GPU it seems, so I've read. Whenever you change anything in the Vive Console, check resolution in SteamVR again. The thing is still fresh and you'd get dynamic adjustments. E.g. I first selected "Extreme", then looked into SteamVR - and what was up with the picture quality?? Took a while until I realised Steam had set SS to 2200x2200 - below native display resolution even... So check that out Set ~3000, or 3400 (if you want to match Reverb G2 PPD horizontally). The aliasing is less hard anyway, you'll see. Edited June 7, 2021 by SCG_Fenris_Wolf
SCG_Redcloud111 Posted June 7, 2021 Posted June 7, 2021 Interesting. There is no way to stop this dynamic change based on GPU in steamvr.settings file? Or maybe in some Vive config file?
Jade_Monkey Posted June 7, 2021 Posted June 7, 2021 Also awaiting fulfillment. Ordered on May 11th too. I did see a charge go through on June 4th though, looking forward to it.

I use this for a similar reason while running the G2 on an RTX2080: https://github.com/elvissteinjr/SteamVR-ForceCompositorScale Initially my quest was to find a way to always have crisp steamvr overlays but going by the steamvr.settings file I think the parameter also affects what Fenris mentioned. At least on my end I no longer see it suggesting that I set the resolution to anything under the 100% mark as it would before I used this addon. For reasons unknown it also helped with lowering in-game frametimes by about 0.5msec on average on my end and I can't figure out why. Edited June 7, 2021 by 335th_GRFirdimigdi
blue_max Posted June 7, 2021 Posted June 7, 2021 Wow, I'm really hoping everyone that gets a VP2 will put a semi-detailed review in this thread. I'm getting more interested in buying this from the relatively positive vibe here.
dburne Posted June 7, 2021 Posted June 7, 2021 Hoping to see mine this week but who knows. My pre-order changed Friday morning to " released for fulfillment" and is still showing that this morning.
SCG_Redcloud111 Posted June 7, 2021 Posted June 7, 2021 (edited) Hey guys I got my VP2 today and have spent a few hours with it. I am very happy with it. Here's my take. I had a slight hiccup after installing in which I could only get 120ghz in Ultra mode. All other modes were giving me flickering screens. With the very specific help of @SCG_Fenris_Wolf, he guided me to do a full removal of PiTools, as well as reinstall SteamVR and clean out a few appdata folders, all is working perfectly. So, I also recommend this critical step. For context, I am coming from a Pimax5K+. My first impression was of clarity and sharpness. Then of much better blacks than on Pimax. I also had no problem finding the sweet spot. And I have edge-to-edge clarity. The small bit of glare doesn't bother me because I am used to it. FOV is equivalent to Small on Pimax (with a smaller VR Cover, which I use), so that is fine with me. One very interesting surprise is that in Half Life Alyx, No Mans Sky, and Star Wars Squadrons, I think the Steam throttling was adjusting things for smooth game play. In FPSVR I could clearly see I was not getting 120ghz but I was experiencing no stuttering. This very much felt like reprojection but without the artifacts (as far as I could see in my cursory first plays). I am very happy with this in most games, outside of IL2, where we will want to lock in 90fps. So, I hope they offer this in Steam or Vive console. So, this definitely feels like a step up from Pimax. I will be playing around with the settings. Fenris suggested we shoot for 3100 x 3100. As he said, it is prudent to check in SteamVR to see what resolution is being output because this is affected by an average of your GPU. Also, I have not tested IL2 because of the display problem. dburne Posted June 7, 2021 Posted June 7, 2021 HTC still shows mine just as released for fulfillment - C'mon HTC let's get busy!!
ICDP Posted June 7, 2021 Posted June 7, 2021 When was your estimated delivery date? Mine was end of June so I can't complain that it has been sitting at shipping processing since Friday.

It is a very minor reduction, but it doesn’t affect me negatively at all. The slight rounding of the Pimax at the bottom is gone, but that was never in focus because the periphery of the Pimax, even on Small, was alway slightly distorted (which you do get used to, of course). I hear the straight-edged panels of the VP2 may bother people coming from Index, but like Sebastian says, this may be mostly due to Index users more accustomed to looking through more of a square rather than a rectangle. I have heard some players of HLAlyx want that vertical FOV for an easy glance down , but I haven’t been bothered. Here’s a question, what sort of TV would you rather have: a big 4x3 that looks like a large-framed painting on your wall or a wider 16x9 that looks like a movie screen stretching left to right? Anyway, the truth is we will want both at some point, but my guess is that horizontal needs to be filled out first. 1
mattswe Posted June 8, 2021 Posted June 8, 2021 Ordered it yesterday evening from a 3rd part retailer, now it says it´s shipped and will be coming tomorrow. Cant complain about that.
dburne Posted June 8, 2021 Posted June 8, 2021 (edited) Just checked on mine this morning, seems it is shipping via Fed Ex and scheduled for delivery tomorrow. Finally! Edited June 8, 2021 by dburne
ICDP Posted June 8, 2021 Posted June 8, 2021 Good luck dburne, enjoy and hopefully we can all stop buying new HMDs every few months in search for the holy grail. Who am I kidding ? P.S. I think you ordered on the 13th and I orderd on the 14th, so if I get mine soon then I will be happy. 1

Who am I kidding ? Exactly As I said in my review, this is somewhat of a sidegrade from Reverb G2. Upsides and downsides definitely. His first impressions will depend on whether he likes crisp pixels or softened ones, and whether he runs at 3400x3400 to match 3100x3100 on the G2, whether he uses replacement foam, whether he only launches SteamVR and looks at white text on black background, whether he gives the headset several hours so his vision can adapt, and how important LH tracking is to him too! It's like the G2 merged with the Index and you replace them with one device. Use Boom3D for the speakers Edited June 8, 2021 by SCG_Fenris_Wolf
dburne Posted June 8, 2021 Posted June 8, 2021 Well Fed Ex has now changed my estimated delivery date from Wed. to Thurs. Somehow I am not surprised... Oh well what's another day I guess.
Gomoto Posted June 8, 2021 Posted June 8, 2021 (edited) I cant stand soft pixels, I like mine crisp! The blurry filter is built into my body already ? Edited June 8, 2021 by Gomoto

dburne Posted June 8, 2021 Posted June 8, 2021 Now I got a text message on cell phone from Fed Ex stating delivery tomorrow so who the heck knows lol.

SCG_Redcloud111 Posted June 9, 2021 Posted June 9, 2021 7 hours ago, Gomoto said: I cant stand soft pixels, I like mine crisp! I agree. I remember being bothered by the filter on the Odyssey+, and I was always pushing my Pimax to be as crisp as possible without tanking FPS. I can tell you, though, that I don’t mind whatever ‘softening’ they are using on the VP2. For example, when I tried the new DLSS in No Man’s Sky on my Pimax, no configuration worked so that I had crisp visuals and good FPS. The picture, even on Quality, was too soft in the Pimax if I wanted good FPS. I had to sacrifice one for the other, so I turned off DLSS. In the VP2, when I run DLSS Quality and set Steam SS to 3100 x 3100 the visuals are crisp and colorful and the frames very smooth. So even with DLSS on and the VP2’s ‘softening’ technique, I prefer it over my Pimax. I can also tell you that MSFS 2020 looks much better in the VP2 than my Pimax. Again, this is due to a number of things related to resolution. The lack of flickering is huge in this case. 1 1
dburne Posted June 9, 2021 Posted June 9, 2021 Well as of this morning Fed Ex tracking shows my VP2 will be delivered tomorrow. 2 1
dburne Posted June 9, 2021 Posted June 9, 2021 (edited) So in getting prepared for my VP2 to arrive tomorrow I realized it has been some months since I have run IL-2. I had moved over to the DCS Hornet and committed to learning it well enough to be able to fly campaigns, which I now have done. So getting back to IL-2 it seems I never really got my newer Virpil CM3 throttle all set up for it properly, so at least today I can spend some time doing so. But I am again reminded of why I really do not care for IL-2's controller setup scheme. I so wish they could improve on that and make it specific to individual planes. And reflect actual controller names. Wishful thinking. Ok just had to vent a little there. Off to do some controller assignments. Edited June 9, 2021 by dburne 1

I also map the max Combat power to the detent. Per plane... You may want to look into that solution. It's the most elegant, did that for SWSq as well.

dburne Posted June 9, 2021 Posted June 9, 2021 I had forgot how gorgeous this sim was in the Reverb G2. My performance is still quite good as well. VP2 going to have a tough time beating this - will see soon enough.
chiliwili69 Posted June 9, 2021 Posted June 9, 2021 Well my VP2 arrived today a midday and I have been testing it for just an hour (with original pad, 6mm pad, 10mm pad and at 3052x3052 in SteamVR with 100%SS and 2448x2448 at 90Hz profile) with all kind of QMB missions. IL-2 run just fine. After that I just put the Index again and made the same QMB with SteamVR150% and you know what: So far I would prefer the Index! It is possible to setup the VP2 with just one basestation and no controllers at all. I only tested IL-2 since this is my only game. The worse thing of the VP2 it is the small eye-box or sweetspot (understood as the place were you get focus), but this is also linked to other bluriness in edges difficult to explain. The glare or godrays is definetely more pronouced in the VP2 than Index. Having a less vertical FOV is not a problem, and the colors and black levels are better in the VP2. But I am thinking right now in keeping the Index. The sound is too much metallic, better in the Index. This are just quick first impressions. 1 1
dburne Posted June 9, 2021 Posted June 9, 2021 I will say @chiliwili69 I was surprised when you chose Index over the Reverb G2 previously. I love the Index for my VR games, but flight sims I myself much prefer the Reverb G2. At this point I am just hoping the Vive Pro 2 can replace both Index and G2 headsets for me. I am not expecting much better visuals though with the VP2 over the Reverb G2. I suspect like the Reverb G2, the Vive Pro 2 will require some work to get it tuned to one's preferences. Also I think probably the Vive software needs to mature some more.
