RoadtoVR not happy with the VP2.

  1. Poor sweetspot
  2. Lower clarity than a G2
  3. Lower FoV than an Index
  4. Microphone is bad
  5. Audio is good but microphone is poor

https://www.roadtovr.com/htc-vive-pro-2-review/

If it is indeed lower clarity than Reverb G2 I will not be much happy either.

We will know tomorrow for sure. It's already in my region and I expect it to arrive during the day (ETA ~18hrs).

If there's one thing I've learnt it is that these reviewers don't know the settings any better than you, ICDP or me.

These values sound like the bugged ROV again. 76° vertical is very suspicious.

Not received any shipping info yet on my end.

I've bought facial pads, holed PU leathers, 6mm, 10mm, 16mm, they've already arrived.

Location in where it's already being sent out is Germany btw.

Poor sweetspot

This again!!  So, not only Voodoo and Oasis but also Ben from RoadtoVR. The old VivePro had the worst sweetspot (edge-to-edge clarity) of any device, I really don´t know how the VivePro was even sold.

I have seen the french review also mention the noticeable blurriness in the edges:

I bought the exact same item(s) from Amazon but in hindsight should have waited until actual reviews come in.

This is probably a good thing as it gives you time to wait for actual user reviews and cancel your pre-order if it comes to it.

@SCG_Fenris_Wolf I will be curious to see what resolution you find appropriate. 2448 x 1.4 = 3427x 3427?  I remember you telling me that we need to make sure Steam is outputting 1.4 resolution of the native panel’s resolution because of distortion. I wonder if some of these reviewers aren’t checking this and are just relying on Steam at 100% Supersampling to do it correctly. And, of course, I assume you will use the narrow face pad to get the lenses as close to your eyes as possible. I got my shipping email yesterday as well. But, then it will come by Aramex, so you will get yours several days before me.

My VP2 has arrived in the morning. I'm in HomeOffice and I'll be putting it into testing soon. First quick look says MRTV was right this time regarding FOV. Will test resolution etc later as well, A/B with G2. I only got a Pixel 4's cam to get through the lens pictures.

Now got some work to finish and will be back later! Fingers itching!

Seems a firmware update yesterday addressed the image clarity in the VP 2.

https://vr-legion.de/tests/htc-vive-pro-2-im-test-der-5k-herausforderer-mit-grossem-fov/

Quote

Update May 31, 2021:

With the update of the Vive Console released today and a firmware update for the Vive Pro 2 included in it, a lot has actually changed. So much that I will have to adjust the conclusion as well. Primarily it's about the image clarity that I criticized in the test - with the update, the Pro 2 actually behaves exactly as I would have expected based on the technical data. The image is now actually very sharp and only minimally behind the HP Reverb G2 in details (such as the clarity of the writing). You have to find the sweet spot of sharpness first, but if the glasses sit correctly on your head, that's no problem and then a very wide area of the image is very razor-sharp - only at the edges, as always with Fresnell lenses, is it blurrier.

I wonder if other reviewers will update their conclussions.  Honestly with each passing day I am feeling more and more confident this will be a viable HMD for those wanted high clarity with a wider FOV.  A genuine Index upgrade.

I sure hope so. Currently I toggle back and forth between the Reverb G2 for my sims and Index for controller VR games.

Lot of cords laying around lol. Thankfully the Lighthouse cameras do not use USB. I would like to get back to using just one headset.

Now just waiting for that magical shipping confirmation.

My testing further delays, got my Pfizer nanites and now chilling on the playground with the kid.

Can't wait to collect hard data. What I already know is that this will double as both Simulator and Roomscale headset like @dburne plans. What I can also say is that at least for me, the thin face cushions = must-have. It's sharp, sweetspot takes a bit to get into, then clarity is great. I'll have to mount straps for cable to the ceiling later as well, that'll serve to free myself from cable until a future Wireless v2 module with full 5K@120Hz will be out for Xmas (fingers crossed). Now.. I need rain outside but the sky is blue from horizon to horizon (rare here)

What cover did you get? Vive Pro and if so it fits ok?

From the RoadToVR review , Ben is now saying in the comments that the edge-to-edge clarity is even worse than the previous VivePro. If this is really true I will cancel my pre-order. I tend to believe more the word of Ben than the MRTV guy (who could n´t notice the worse edge-to-edge clarity of the G2).

So, Please Fenris, If you have a chance just test edge-to-edge clarity.

I think you of all people should know the only way to be sure if a VR HMD is good for you is to test it yourself.  There are so many different factors that someone could put on a VP2 for example and call it horrible and others will be blown away by the clarity and FOV.

Worst that will happen is you test it and hate it and send it back under DSR and you are out nothing but the postage.

I was really excited for this headset but... it seems I will make do with my Q2 and wait for a headset that is a real upgrade across all fronts... sigh

Q2?

Or do you mean G2?

This is going to be like every other HMD out there, better in some areas and worse in others.  I have yet to get that one single HMD that has it all.  And the sad thing is there are no techincal reasons for this not to exist.  It always seems like the manufacturers are holding back.

Good FoV

Oled

Good lenses

Hi res

Great audio

Great tracking

No glare or God Rays.

Very true words full agree.

The thought of cancelling my pre-order never crossed my mind.

I will see for myself how I like it. Still hoping with this one I can get back to just one headset for everything.

It's reaching a point of diminishing returns in my opinion.

The Reverb is insanely clear.  Even if the Vive Pro is "clearer" from a specs standpoint..I doubt it's a "wow factor" level.  That doesn't include the cost to performance ratio as well....for a slightly higher spec on the visuals..you are essentially paying 2-3x more money for the entire kit.  Just doesn't make sense for most folks if you don't already have a built in investment in a Vive/Index enviornment and are only upgrading your headset.

Yeah I already have the Lighthouse 2.0 system that came with my Index that I will be using with the Vive Pro 2.

If it is really close to Reverb G2 clarity and FOV better and I can run it with smooth performance I will then use it as my only headset which is what I am hoping for. Maybe even little better sweet spot, will see.

I have already ordered the thinner cushions for it, they will be here tomorrow so will have them ahead of time.

I will tell ya for those made for VR games that utilize the controllers, Lighthouse 2.0 is really, really nice.

G2's FOV is atrocious compared to VivePro(1).

If  VP2 delivers the same FOV as VP1 + clarity of G2 = WIN.

I have no idea now and every review I read is contradicting each other.  I watched the Tested review and he said it was not as clear as a G2 or a G1 (but close), had an HFOV of 108 deg with both stock and thin facepads.  It also had low sweet spot but when you are in it you get good edge to edge clarity.  Then I watched another review that said it was as clear as a G2, even though that tester had a 2070S and was running the VP2 in upscaled mode.

  • So this HMD has wide FOV while also having a narrow FOV
  • Has better, worse and similar clarity than a G2
  • crap audio but good audio
  • Poor edge to edge clarity and good edge to edge clarity
  • Poor sweetspot and OK sweetspot

All at the same time?

Oh, thanks for this review synopsis! Saves me a lot of time spent video watching. It looks like the Vive Pro 2 is a definite purchase/sit this one out for me!

Lol yeah just goes to show you how it is very individual specific on how they will see the unit.

Unfortunately with VR one really has to try the unit before knowing how they will like it.

I remember going into a Microsoft store and physically trying a few of the WMR headsets when that was a new thing. What different times those were.

Yeah if I already had the knuckles, lighthouses..it would definitely be a potential buy for me.

That being said..I've "pimped out" my G2 with VRWave Corrective lenses with my Rx, counter weight for more comfort and easier alignment of sweet spot, and Frankenfov modded face mask.  I'm really really enjoying the G2, specifically for IL-2 and Star Wars Squadrons.

Yeah I am currently doing a play through of Star Wars Squadrons in the G2, it is gorgeous for sure. All maxed out on the graphics.

Oh man, I went stronk into SW Sq around Christmas, especially in competitive MP. Got ScalpWakka to burst out at me a few times too and spit hate at my beautiful TIE Defender, good times. A game ruined by running out of patches in its service life - game mechanics exploits and macro'ing. Don't get me wrong, I built my own macros too and could boost-gasp infinitely with a single press of a button (built for each ship separately), shield-skip, shunt-charge, the whole book. It ruined the MP community however, you could boost around virtually endlessly while charging weapons and shields.

Yes, there were a lot of contradicting reviews and the final one from Fenris determined me to keep my pre-order.  Basically I didn´t want to waste my time if the edge-to-edge clarity was not good. But the Fenris review was giving me a lot of hope. Let´s see.

In fact, I already ordered the same 6mm pad that fenris was posting above.

It is interesting what they say about the vertical FOV compared with Index:

"The Vertical FOV on the Index is simply perfect for me with my face shape; I don't see how it could be better, slim foam makes VP2 totally acceptable; however I'm not sure yet if the increased HFOV is worth it on the VP2; If the panels had the same pixel per degree resolution; I would absolutely choose Valve Index, due to comfort and audio; but the VP2 is so clear in terms of pixel resolution per degree that I don't know if I could go back to Index now even though everything else about the Index is better(audio, comfort, VFOV) UPDATE: After more time playing with the Pro 2, especially in Half Life: Alyx... I'm seriously missing the vertical field of view of the Index.... There is a lot of looking down at your hands in that game; and I'm finding myself having to crane my neck a lot to see my ammo status or see what is at my feet; where before I could just glance down with my eyes; don't get me wrong; the horizontal FOV is noticeable better on the VP2 than Index; but To sum it up; the loss of the vertical field of view as compared to the Index; so far is a bit more annoying than the benefit of having a few more degrees of horizontal visibility; since the vertical FOV tends to have your hands directly in the bottom of that area."

Let´s see how it goes with IL-2. Once you are get used to a perfect VFOV it is dificult to acept less.

Just checked and now my order states it has been released for shipping and I will be getting shipping info via email when it ships.

Yay finally something is happening, I chose two day shipping also so maybe not too much longer now.

Mine now say shipment processing but I can't remember if it always said that or not.  When I preordered on the 14th May I was told end of June for delivery, unless there has been a lot of cancellations to move me up the list.

So if I get it earlier I will be happy enough because I have seen enough postive reviews to know it should be fine margins over my 8KX.  It will be returned under DSR if I don't like it.

Yeah mine never said processing for shipment until this morning. I think we are close now.

My thinner face cushions are arriving today so I will be ready for it.
