We dropped all the bombs on the target in level bombing from 3000 m. 
Maybe I forgot to mention it in my post.

Yes without any co-ordination 2 of us just happened to take off side by side, pursue and attack your 2 BR20's, and then crash land in the desert side by side. 

At least we had each other for company on the long walk back.

  REGIA AERONAUTICA MISSION BRIEFING

Date: November 09, 1940

Time: 07:00 AM

   ITALIAN AIR MISSION: "Support your advanced tank columns"
TARGETS (For N°1 Victory Points):

- (INTELLIGENCE REPORT): SECTOR M11 - SQUARE 2  FORTIFIED CAMP

SITUATION:

After having successfully advanced, on the whole ground front, and having conquered Sidi el Barrani, 
the 10a Armata stands on a defensive line that goes from Sidi el Barrani, East Tumar, Nimbeiwa, Bir-abia (Habrata), and reaches the Siwa oasis in the middle of the deep Marmaric desert. 
The most advanced operating airport is Buq-Buq.

To date, there is no forecast to resume the advance.
The reinforcements requested by General Graziani are slow to arrive, and the Regia Marina doesn't send its ships to stop this damned bombardment from the sea.
General Berti has repeatedly reported the presence of an area of about 20 km in Bir-Emba that cannot be garrisoned, it is located between the deployment of the 2a Libica and the Cirene division, 
but the Command believes that the enemy is short of men, and who does not intend to attack in that point.

The Genio Militare built the paved road from Sollum, and an aqueduct, even provisions arrive regularly.

In this moment of tranquility, the task of our air force will be to preemptively strike the concentrations of enemy troops and protect our Units from attacks.
 
Possible fortifications, artillery positions and tanks must be attacked by our Cr.42 and Br.20.
Once the bombs are dropped, the Cr.42 will join the G.50 to protect our strongholds from possible enemy attacks.
Our G.50s are certainly our best aircraft, but they are few. They need to be used with thrift!

ATTENTION:
Before attacking any targets on the ground identify them, remembering that:
- OUR armored troops are attested in the strongholds or they are heading East
- the field is controlled by OUR self-supporting mobile columns, with only few tanks
- the road costrution sites and the port of Sollum and Sidi el Barrani are possible targets
- it is necessary cover the area of Bir-Emba (P9,4)

 (For N°1 Victory Points):

SITUATION:
Our reconnaissance and ground patrols indicate a large area of about 20 km in which the Italians have not set up defenses. The location is Bir-Emba in position P9,4.
It is there that (General Wavell says) we will launch an attack to check how the Italian defenses can react to the offense, and prevent us from reaching the coast by bypassing Sidi el Barrani.
The most powerful Italian division, the 2a Libica of General Maletti, is entrenched in Nibeiwa, and we must prevent it from intervening to close the leak, attacking it by surprise from West.
Passing through Bir-Emba, our armored vehicles will be able to take her from behind where their camp is not yet well protected. The new Matilda tanks will make a difference.
Our Marsa-Matruh and other Southern airports, in deep Marmarian desert, were well stocked with new aircraft and at maximum operation, we have not lost any installations since last October.
We can finally count on many Hurricane Mk I/Trop.
But they must be used with care!

 

 

ATTENTION:
1) Before attacking any target on the ground, identify it, remember that:
- from Bir-Emba the advance will follow a path towards North-West.
- the Italian tanks are entrenched in their fields, they move only with mobile armed columns
- ALL VEHICLES coming from Sollum or Sidi Barrani on the coast are ENEMIES
2) Two Squadrons of Blenheims will depart from Marsa-Matruh to attack the enemy airport of Bir El Beira N.2

a) 2 miles North from Sidi el Barrani, 7:44 AM, Angels 11.
b) Sollum, 7:59 AM, Angels 11.

OPERATIONAL NOTES:
Our Spies report that the Italians intend to send supplies by air. Shoot-down their planes that will come from Tobruk...Orders will follow!
Royal Navy announces a naval bombardment on Sidi el Barrani, it is necessary to protect it from the sky .. Orders will follow!
Remember: if damaged or without ammunition, you can land or refuel at any operating base.

Thanks for the efforts again.

One comment from commonwealth side - were you aware that we only had the fighter blenheim variant available to us (ie was this a deliberate campaign action)?

The fighter blenheim (ivF) has no internal bomb load, only the 8 x 40lb bombs available to use. Made attacking any target almost irrelevant (hurricane FB carries the same loadout) as we could not carry 250 or 500lbs. So we were taking 3 blenheims on a mission and getting 3% damage making it feel some what pointless.

It was easter weekend, a lot thought it would not happen - or turned up late because it actually started somewhat nearer to 19:30 GMT. One day was pretty short notice. I only turned up in time by accident.

You are right and we apologise for that. The problem was I were outside due to work engagements and I returned only Friday in condition to prepare the Briefing and so on... normally we advise at least 1 week before... ?

Notwithstanding the fierce Combats the campaign remained at an incredible equilibrium:
After Four Air Battles 4 Victory Targets per Side !!!   This is a PERFECT DRAW in AiR.

Here the Preliminary Mission result. We have only to calculate the losses detail.

With the Battle of NIMBEWA ends the FIRST PART OF ITALIAN INVASION OF EGYPT IN 1940.



At DECEMBER 1940 British troops began the "OPERATION COMPASS" that carry to the conquer of all CIRENAICA.


Only the arrival of German AFRIKA KORPS push back British Forces behind the Egyptian  Border
