Charlo-VRde Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 Thank you, @Chiliwili69, and I agree it is a bit strange, as I had read that Intel RAM overclocking guide, too, and I am only interested in simply using built-in XMP profiles. When I add to my i7 10700 build any RAM that runs at 1.5v, pcpartpicker displays this note: “Note:The G.Skill Trident Z RGB 32 GB (4 x 8 GB) DDR4-4000 CL15 Memory operating voltage of 1.5 V exceeds the Intel Comet Lake CPU recommended maximum of 1.35 V+5% (1.417 V). This memory module may run at a reduced clock rate to meet the 1.35 V voltage recommendation, or may require running at a voltage greater than the Intel recommended maximum.”

As with any overclocking, ymmv.
Charlo-VRde Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 Earlier in this topic @chiliwili69states, "Initially I thought that the important number to correlate was going to be the first word latency (it is 2000*CL/Freq). The lower the better. But Greif saw that frequency was correlating better than first word latency." Since speedier RAM at 4000MHz but also at 1.35v requires a higher CL and first word latency, I'll probably get the G.Skill Trident Z Royal 32 GB (4 x 8 GB) DDR4-4000 CL17 at https://pcpartpicker.com/product/gXKcCJ/gskill-trident-z-royal-32-gb-4-x-8-gb-ddr4-4000-memory-f4-4000c17q-32gtrs Thank you @dburneand @chiliwili69 , two of the folk who I most trust when it comes to recommendations, for noticing my posts

If the manufacturer has an XMP specification for a particular memory kit and it says 1.5v, then that's fine for that particular kit (as long as your motherboard can do it). The 1.35v thing is simply a caution for people playing with voltages themselves and potentially damaging their chips. To get to 4000 and above you're quite likely to need more than 1.35v, and if it's in the XMP, it's ok. Edit: And technically, XMP itself is an "overclocking" setting - it's more than JEDEC standards which cap out at like 2400 or something. But it's manufacturer approved overclocking. It's still always worth looking at your motherboard's RAM compatibility list, they test stuff and can give a thumbs up that it'll work (they don't test everything though, so if a RAM kit is not on the approved list, it might still work). Charlo-VRde Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 Ah, thanks, @Alonzo, another person in these forums whose posts I look for on these types of things! I rather suspected it is the case that Intel's 1.35v RAM limitation falls more in the realm of overcautious. That puts back in play the G.Skill Trident Z RGB 32 GB (4 x 8 GB) DDR4-4000 CL15 at https://pcpartpicker.com/product/VFxbt6/gskill-trident-z-rgb-32-gb-4-x-8-gb-ddr4-4000-memory-f4-4000c15q-32gtzr that I prefer (and which is also listed on the MSI QVL for the MEG Z490 Unify board I have in mind).

You have the current top GPU but in memory you are not at that level. See what frequencies support your MoBo. If they support 3200 or more it could be worth to upgrade to gain some performance. The higher the better. I installed fpsVR for steam. Mostly the frametimes for GPU were slightly higher than the CPU ones. And there were a lot of short red spikes for both frametimes. Today I received my new DDR4 3200 (Highest that my MoBo support, it's bit old I know). I installed them and flashed Bios also to newest version. I did some quick testing with 8 Mustangs vs 8 109s in Bodenplatte summer map (Ultra preset, High shadows, 2xFXAA). Now the frametimes for GPU were constantly lower than the CPU ones and the red spikes were gone. I think there is major improvement here. Thanks for the advice?

What FPS are you getting running the G1?

In the 90Hz mode I get 90fps when there is nothing or little happening around me. In a dogfight with multiple planes the fps drops to 80-85. It can drop to 70 or lower when there is also lot going on on the ground like in scripted missions. Bit hard to give you good answer as it depends so much on the situation. I can play a track with my setup if you want.

So a slower RAM speed (or bottleneck in RAM) is seen as a higher GPU frametimes with spikes. Who could image that!
