Ok I hope someone, anyone... has an idea about this one.

Testing the scripted campaign, and some testers cannot hear the custom radio calls.

They work fine for me, and fine for another tester, but 2 other testers can’t hear them.

If they place the campaign under the normal missions directory and play from there however they can hear the custom sounds just fine.

All sound files folders in the same folder as the missions. (01 radio calls, 02 radio calls etc) There was no issues during months of testing while operating in the game/missions directory. However some testers are not hearing the calls when the campaign is moved into the scripted campaigns directory.

I’m at a loss.

Any ideas?

What is the sound format used, and where are these sound files put in the campaign directory? Are your sound files stereo channel or mono ? What is the sound digital bandwith I mean what frequency?

From what you say it seems a dev setup issue. Check what kind of sound parameter setup they have in their game, and what Windows versions are used. Check also if all use the OS sound or have a separate sound board with specific sound software. Sound is also managed by the graphic card and there are plethora of versions for the drivers and hardware.

Ensuring that all will be fine in a world where PC systems are of an infinite variety of combinations of hardware and software with different versions some with pretty old machines various graphic, sound boards make it solving such issue nearly impossible. No guarantee to cover all cases. This is the advantage of free software. When paying for it I agree that when things don't work it can be very frustrating.

Shot in the dark here but is there any difference in the complete path to a particular sound file between a tester that can hear the file and a tester that cannot hear the file? I know that when I place a Word file too deep in a directory, sometimes the name gets cut off and I cannot open the file.

Gambit,

I have all sounds and media files in a separate folder inside the campaign folder,  for example...acthungspitfire/media

Had no problem until now and all works as it should.

All mp3 files are in a separate folder inside the campaign folder as Haash describes.

I have multiple folders, but the structure is the same. No issues until now.

So unless a tester moves the folders there should be no change in the file path.

I was thinking of the complete path, from the drive on down, but maybe the file is not buried deep enough to make a difference.

I see - C drive vs E drive etc.

I wonder...that would be disturbing. That would mean that only players with IL2 on their C drive would hear the sounds.

I have noticed that I can change the name of the campaign folder itself (tested this) and the file links remain intact.

EDIT: but works for them when played from their Missions folder remember, just not from the Campaigns folder. So not a drive issue.

It's not the drive I was thinking of but how deep the sound file is placed within the drive.

E.g,

E:\1C Game Studios\IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Moscow\data\Campaigns\Gambits Campaign\media\gambitsSoundFile1.mp3

versus

E:\Program Files (x86)\1C Game Studios\IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Moscow\data\Campaigns\My Testing for Gambit\Gambits Campaign\media\gambitsSoundFile1.mp3

After past problems I’ve kept it simple.

C:/IL2 Sturmovik/data/campaigns/Hell Hawks/sounds. (So sound folders are in the same folder as the missions)

Check if the people who can't hear it are using the game via steam.

That will make the file path much longer.

I 've seen that problem at work: on certain applications if a file path gets longer than x characters (256 i think) the link stops working...

Nolly - noted.

I’ll ask them.

Stranger still, one of the testers created a folder called “sound’ in Hell Hawks folder, put all the sound files in it, and now he can hear them.

Seems to me not only should this not be necessary, but it should break the file path and prevent them from working.

I’m confused.

OK - constructed the campaign in the "missions" folder, so that's where the game wants to find the files.

So if myself or a testers ALSO has the campaign installed in the missions folder then it will work, if the campaign is only installed in the campaigns folder - no sound.

(because the path is still pointed at the missions folder)

Don't know why this didn't occur to me early on, but I'm a bit stressed. I might have to to go re-link all those files.

Well not as bad as I thought (thankfully I was very organized with my mission sound folders) so I'll get through about half tonight, other half tomorrow night, then back in business.

Live and learn.

Not having reached that step yet. My missions are still at the individual mission stage, were all my sound files work perfectly. I would have probably got the same trouble as once installing them in the Campaign directory.  Many thanks to Gambit that cleans the path for us. ?
