Ceowulf Posted March 29, 2019 Posted March 29, 2019 (edited) Hi Guys, I have less technical knowledge than most of my readers I suspect and I have never tried another headset so, this is just my initial newbie thoughts for other initial newbies . (My system below but I'm coming from 40” 4k monitor which was 65FPS on my 1070 in QMB 4v4, Kuban.) I bought from O+ from the Samsung site on sale for $300 in early March and it arrived yesterday. I took time off. VR Experience: First time in VR. Amazing thing. Hard to describe. It's cool like if you hadn't seen any computer game before ever and then played IL2 at 4k 60hz on a 32” monitor. It kind of seemed like my consciousness in two places, 80% in an airplane, 20% trying to find the mouse and not spill my coffee. IL2 implementation: This is from no other experience. Seems really easy to use and awesome. They've done a big thing here. One very little issue so far - centering is a new skill. To get my view point the way I want, I have to push the center key which is bound on joystick main thumb button, just like for Track IR. The problem is, it's fiddly and I have to sit just right off of real life center to be in the virtual center after the push. No big deal but annoying since I'm already busy. Odyssey Plus Setup: Easy, plug and play. Just remember to install WMR through Steam VR first. Head comfort: Not great. Feels sore-ish after two hours. I'm going to try a VR cover as people have recommended. If no improvement, it's still worth it. Eye comfort/motion sickness: Nothing but a slightly weird body feeling except when I switch view out of plane to watch a bandit on fire. Ctrl-F2. Bad habit, time to stop. Clarity: At first my settings were full ultra 4k, from when just pushing my monitor. FPS was 40 alone on a Kuban beach. However, I got to see what the O+ could look like. No SDE at all. Very clear and crisp. It didn't look “softened.” Colors look really great. The O+ in IL2 on Ultra is beautiful. FOV: My experience, it feels like wearing those horse blinders we used to see in the Great War. FPS on my rig: 45-90FPS when set Balanced minus, see pic for details. Don't know what I'm doing. Don't like mods. No benchmarking, just 6 hours play time. (2hrsx3) On Kuban Island QMB Spit x3 vs E7 x4, FPS hung around 70 with dips to 40 for seemingly no reason. Same on other parts of Kuban map. More planes didn't make much difference. Sometimes FPS alone was as bad as 45. Sometimes mid fight was 70. Maybe it correlates to cars driving by IRL. FPS experience: I know people say it should be 90. It felt good from about 60 – 90. It felt ok from 45-59. Actually I didn't even mind the low 40's too bad if they were momentary - no motion sickness from them and I still felt immersed. My take, it's way worth using at 45-60 AND also, I will begin setting up my attack run on a better video card in 12-24 months. Ceowulf<>< My system: i5 6600k OC@4.5ghz, Gtx1070, 16GB G.Skill 3200mhz, SanDiskUltraII 960gb SSD Sim gear: Virpil MongoosT50, CH Pedals, Thurstmaster Warthog Throttle, CH Quadrant, TrackIR5 w/ Philips 40” 4k, or Samsung Odyssey+, Belkin mousepad. EDIT: Sorry, picture bad. I'll replace when I can. Edited March 29, 2019 by Ceowulf 3 2
BlackMambaMowTin Posted March 31, 2019 Posted March 31, 2019 Congrats. I'm surprised you're able to jump right into a cockpit in VR. It sometimes takes time to get your "VR legs." In other words, desensitize yourself to motion sickness. I have become almost completely immune now but I was always pretty resistant. Just curious, how do you mount your Mongoose joystick?
Panzerlang Posted March 31, 2019 Posted March 31, 2019 With the Rift I too have to look just a fraction right of centre to get a true centre. FPS can go to 45 (not seen it go lower) but have never felt even a hint of sickness.
SYN_Luftwaffles Posted March 31, 2019 Posted March 31, 2019 Don't forget that you can alter the super-sampling through SteamVr. https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-supersampling-windows-mixed-reality It's a bit different than that, but you can see how to access SteamVr's settings. Instead of developer mode and all that, just go under applications and find IL2. Turn it up a smidge if you'd like. I've got mine at 150% on balanced with a 1070 and an 8700k

SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted April 3, 2019 Posted April 3, 2019 (edited) With F10 you can remap your aircraft's in-game center. That way you don't need to always remap your headset's in-game center. Edited April 3, 2019 by SCG_Fenris_Wolf

Hi, could you please post more detailed photos and explanations on how exactly you did that field modif ? It would be appreciated here as I want to do the very same thing but I don't get why your back strap comes at the bottom of the back headband. And as I'm french too, I'd be pleased to read where you got the stuff to do this. (Particularly about the crossing in the middle). Edited April 3, 2019 by Solmyr

Ceowulf Posted April 5, 2019 Author Posted April 5, 2019 Guys, Sorry for the fire and forget. @BlackMambaMowTin Yeah, I was surprised I could jump in for two hours first time, too, because I actually get carsick sometimes. VR is definitely a weird experience. I found the first time I was sweating a little and it wasn't hot and also, more embarrassingly, I keep having a dream where I do a split-S with too little altitude and see the ground rush up to me upside down. @Uffz-Prien I'm getting used to re-centering. Now when I get it, I leave it alone instead of fiddling so much. Settling into the gunsight feels very cool. @SYN_Luftwaffles Thanks, I'm set at Steam VR 150% too. I also set the WMR setting to “very high, (beta)” but it seemed to make no difference to visuals or fps. @-IRRE-Preach8331 Bonne idée, merci beaucoup! One important note: I've had since had some time to get used to VR and do my own loose benchmarking. After figuring out what I think are best settings for me, I turned off fps counter in startup.cfg. This one step seriously improved my enjoyment of VR. Stop playing FPS counter and start playing IL2. With it off the game rarely feels choppy between 45 and 80. With it on, “it's supposed to be 90” is all I think about. I guess that's admitting mental weakness but it really works. Ceowulf<><
