P-51B/C won the airwar in western front. The D model started to appear in numbers in mid-late 44, when the luftwaffe was already on it's knees from the work thunderbolts and B models have done.

That's quite an acheivment when we consider that they only started to become available at the end of 1943 / begining of 1944.

If we were to swallow this stuff, we would need to dismiss the fact that the Luftwaffe were fighting an airwar on the western front that started in 1939 and another airwar on the eastern front from 1941 that started almost 6 month before the Pear Harbour attack and yet another airwar in the Med and North Africa

 

All of this had a massive toll on pilots, (some highly experienced) either through outright loss or sheer fatigue, plus aircraft, equipment and important materials that need to be substituted with inferior replacements by the time the P-51B took to the air.

That's just the effect of direct combat that the Luftwaffe was involved with and does not take into account the effects of naval blockades and disruption to industrial capacity not the effects of area bombing of the German population. Etc.

In my opinion it is not a time problem but rather a technical problem.
Maybe they had planned to launch something at the same time as this DD but they had a hitch or discovered a vug and would rather postpone the launch than launch something that doesn't work or doesn't work well.
