I'd love to make a skin of a semi-local ace's plane I saw at the Warhawk Air Museum in Idaho, originally flown by Lt. Col. Duane W. Beeson. He join the RCAF when he didn't meet the requirements for the USAAC; and flew with them until 1942 when he transferred into the USAAF. He shot down 12 aircraft with the P-47C/D, and 5 with the P-51B, with 22 victories total. Ultimately, he passed away of a brain tumor at the age of 25.

If you're a 4thFG buff, I hope you've read 1000 Destroyed and Escort To Berlin. Both are excellent reads.

I'm afraid not! I've concentrated most of my reading time to the Eastern front, Pacific, and more recently missiles. Of course... What reading you can do about missiles...

Always looking for good books though, thanks for the suggestion!

An interesting missile book I've read lately is titled Command and Control: Nuclear Weapons, the Damascus Accident, and the Illusion of Safety. It's about an accident where a Titan II blew up in its silo. You can kinda get an idea of what happened here.

Without his influence, the P-51 might not have become the dominate force it was as early as it was. This was his first B model, perhaps the first in the 4thFG with the Malcolm hood.

Yep.

“We are here to fight,” he told them. “To those who don’t believe me, I would suggest transferring to another group. I’m going to fly the arse off each one of you. Those who keep up with me, good. Those who don’t, I don’t want them.”

He had flown more than 100 sorties in the Spitfire and been credited with three aerial victories by the time the RAF’s three Eagle squadrons were transferred to the U.S. Army Air Forces in September 1942, forming the 4th Fighter Group.

Escort To Berlin is also great. It is basically a complete day to day mission log of the 4th FG's history in WW2 including Eagle Squadron missions from the start. A bit dull at times reading all those mission reports, but gives you a great idea what they really went through from day 1.

I just googled "Escort to Berlin" and of course what comes up is "Escorts in Berlin", which is not quite the same....  :o:

I'll try adding WWII to the search...

This is the book. Had it for 40 years or so. Excellent.

Yep that's the one! I lost my first copy about 6 years ago to water damage, so now I have my second copy. I've been through just about every book on the 4th FG and they all have some merit, but this one is the best from a historical perspective giving you precise dates for the little stuff like when they got issued the first G-suits (both types, water and pneumatic), turnover from Spits to Jugs and then Mustangs, how hard it was to get the coveted Malcolm hoods, and good descriptions of their many combats, etc. Highly recommend it.

I'm on my second copy too. Bought it brand new in 2013 from the original printing. I've used the indexes in the first copy to cross check A/C serial numbers, pilots and the like that the book is completely worn out. The new copy sits in my bookcase untouched.

If I could recommend a good book about a Fourth pilot, check out Delayed Legacy by Conrad John Netting IV. His father flew with the Fourth from 4/4/44 until he was lost on 6/10/44. It was an excellent read of a sad story and then ultimately one that was somewhat rewarding.

Hopefully the P-51B will get a nice mix of OD, two tone and natural metal skins.  I think a lot of the stock P-51D choices were a little bland.

I agree the default D model skins aren't bad but there's lack of army green color skins.

Hey guys,

Sorry no DD today. We are focused on the Release Candidate for 4.605 with the Breguet and AQMG. After this we plan to put the new clouds into the Beta next week. Probably have a good DD next week.

:salute:.
