HandyNasty Posted September 27, 2018 Posted September 27, 2018 Is it me or does that look like Albert Einstein in pilot gear???
unreasonable Posted September 27, 2018 Posted September 27, 2018 I really do not approve of that unshaven look. Obviously not an officer. And certainly not a gentleman. 1
Diggun Posted September 27, 2018 Posted September 27, 2018 (edited) Are you kidding me? You need a few days growth to give the whale oil something to cling to. And you're not going to want to shave daily when you're subjected to sub zero temperatures all the time - your skin couldn't take it! This is why Ranulph Fiennes always looks so scruffy.... Actually I suspected that long ago....
Diggun Posted September 27, 2018 Posted September 27, 2018 (edited) Photoshoots in the first world war were always very naturalistic unplanned affairs, and definitely never orchestrated beforehand... And, yup, maximum respect for those in uniform (and those who have worn it), but I've never worn one myself. Does that matter? Cecil Lewis did wear one though, and frequently discusses going on patrol unshaven and unwashed (and with his pyjamas on under his flying gear) for days and days on end during 'pushes'. I suspect that, when push comes to shove, most military organisations prefer operational expediency and effectiveness to parade ground perfection. Here's my favourite RAF facial hair story btw.,.. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/7451939.stm Edited September 27, 2018 by Diggun
unreasonable Posted September 27, 2018 Posted September 27, 2018 Then he must have had a dreadfully negligent CO. Good personal hygiene is vital to maintain morale, what, what! 1

Danziger Posted September 28, 2018 Posted September 28, 2018 Yeah I was in the Iraq invasion in 2003. We were living in our vehicles with only what we brought with us. We were rationed to two bottles of water a day when it was over 130F outside. We still had to shave every morning.

In the US military, unless you have a profile or are part of SOCOM (even then you still shave any time you have to wear a dress uniform) you shave every working day. The US Army regulation is AR670-1.
