That said, if you have no other option. Steam is still a good option.

Gienek Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 Hey all… I’m a (sorta) newbie. I “flew” the original IL-2 sim when it first came out. I was only a casual stick jockey but had tons o’ fun! But then other life responsibilities got in the way of my flying fun and I have been “grounded” for several years. Fast forward to today… I have more time to “fly” and I have the same ol’ ancient computer. ACK! BUT… I just ordered a new machine (AMD 5900X, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080, 32 GB DDR4-3600, etc.). I think it’s a sweet rig and I will be on Cloud 9 when it arrives (probably because my wallet is so light now I’m floating). In the interim, I have a bunch of stupid question for y’all. (NOTE: I’m a professionally licensed engineer who absolutely hates most modern computer technology! ? ) I see there is currently a sale going on. Can I purchase these sims/games now and download them to my new PC when it arrives in a few weeks? Will the new sims I download come with all the latest patches? If not, will I have to install all of the patches that have been released one at a time in a sequential order (I remember having to do this with the original IL-2? Or was that Falcon 4.0? Or both?)? Is there a good place to find all of the patches (I’m sure it’s on this forum somewhere)? Thanks, check six and I look forward to being everyone’s 20mm canon fodder!!! ? Na zdrowie!!! g

The latest patch, which includes all of the game's previous updates will be automatically downloaded and installed when you launch the game for the first time. No need to look around for individual patch installation files - it's all handled automatically by the game. 1

AJSNIPES Posted January 16, 2021 Posted January 16, 2021 I was wondering if i could play il2 Bos and other battles with just keyboard and mouse. Ive never really played a flight sim before and i haven't bought il2 yet because i just wanna know if the game is playable with just keyboard and mouse. (Im sorry if i offend anyone w this question i understand im a noob.)
AOB Posted January 24, 2021 Posted January 24, 2021 Hi AJ, given that keyboard templates do not show flight stick assignments I am thinking that a lot of folk must use keyboard and mouse. It should be perfectly possible.
Adler23FalkeAuge Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 (edited) I haven't played in a while. Most missions are not working. "Mission description is loading" - is the message I get. Do I need to reload them? Also when I do get a tank mission to open - aiming the turret can not be controlled by the mouse. Shift "T" locks and unlocks the turret, but that's it. Is there a tentative date for BON release? I see updates regarding the Hurricane, and a C-47 - are those collector planes that have to be purchased separately? Edited January 26, 2021 by Adler23FalkeAuge Additional question.

I believe there is a utility to do that for a bunch of missions at a time. Hurricane is a collector's plane. The C-47 is an AI-only plane for Battle of Normandy, though many hope it will be flyable one day.
BritishDragon Posted January 27, 2021 Posted January 27, 2021 Hello pilots! I bought a PC a few months ago for racing and flight sims and have slowly been buying hardware, bit by bit, for IL-2 Great Battles. After seeing it on YouTube, I was blown away. Especially with TrackIR! I've now eventually got everything I think I need. Warthog HOTAS, rudder pedals and TrackIR 5. I have some basic knowledge from a few of years of playing War Thunder with mouse and keyboard on the Xbox X and the old console version of IL-2 Sturmovik and Birds of Steel. I've managed to set everything up, which was quite stressful at times. TrackIR, button bindings, custom skins etc. It took me a few days to realise that I needed to set up the TrackIR myself and other peoples profiles weren't working for me. I'm currently practicing still (60 hours so far on expert quick missions and also the mod flight schools from Utopioneer) and I hope to be playing multiplayer soon. I think I will be flying the Dora, K4 or Tempest. Although I'm not sure how the multiplayer servers work. I'm guessing they limit the plane choice? One of the hardest things (apart from staying alive) will be navigation from what I've seen. Especially in the snow. I will need to learn how the cockpit navigation pip squeak instruments work on YouTube again. Any idea on what servers I should join? I hear Combat Box, WoL or maybe the Finnish servers are popular. I had a look and it seems that most of the servers are empty. I really hope this sim isn't dying out and I'm too late. I think I could spend a lot of time in this sim.

There are navigation resources under "Flying Guides and Utilities" in this post. Tips for "staying alive" (..staying alive...ah, ah, ah ,ah, staying alive) can be found under "Air Combat Guides" in the same post. Enjoy!

CombatBox is a great server for beginners and advanced, assuming you can navigate without GPS (worth doing, and not super difficult if you practice) and take off and land (Landing is optional if you get shot down as often as me). If you can do so at all, try to get on SRS with voice comms - see the thread here: Installation and Usage of SRS for IL-2 (Voice Comms App) - SRS Radio - IL-2 Sturmovik Forum. During higher volume times it is usually not hard to find a few guys to fly with. Finnish is also a great server, though I don't play on it much as my connection is often poor to European servers. On that one the planesets are different and late war craft are not always available I think. The Tempest is a beast - its a very powerful plane but punishing because it can black you out really quick - very sensitive elevator combined with high speed. On CombatBox, it can sometimes be available only in limited numbers for balance reasons. The D9 and K-4 might be limited too, depending on the timeline of the missions. IMO, train yourself in some planes that will be available in most maps. Once you have learned to fly one plane well, the rest will come easier. The Spitfire is available on pretty much all maps on the CB rotation and will teach you discipline in ground handling - it has a pronounced tendency to ground-loop. Make sure you practice with it offline to get used to handling it, the Tempest can be tricky this way too due to the non-locking tailwheel. The P-51 is highly competitive, usually available, but a little trickier to fight in due to the way it stalls. The P-47 is my favourite plane to fly but usually outmatched at the altitudes combat is at, if you're looking for dogfighting.

ZAMBO Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 Hello: I purchased & installed Battle of Bodenplatte last week. This week, I purchased BOS and I see that the Downloader file is the same as the one for the Bodenplatte install. What's the easiest way to install BOS if I already have BOBP installed without having to download the whole thing again? Thanks.
II/JG17_HerrMurf Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 (edited) You don't have to do anything. The downloader will essentially "unlock" the BOS content next time you open the game. They are not separate games. Make sure you activate BOS in your License Keys on your profile at the IL2 website. Edited January 28, 2021 by II/JG17_HerrMurf

I asked because when I bought BOBP, the downloader download like 30G of data. Do you mean that I simple need to run the downloader again and it will download only the content for BOS? Also, do I enter the BOS key on the website now, or after installation? Note: I don't play online, Multiplayer, or career. I only play Quick Missions (Single-player) Thanks.
II/JG17_HerrMurf Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 Go to the website and login. Go to the License Key tab in your profile, it's red in the upper right. In your license keys, scroll down and activate BOS. Start the game and the downloader will check for keys (in the background). Your BOS content should be immediately available for play once the game launches. In very rare occasions you might have to restart the game a few times before it shows up but after that it's permanent.
Art-J Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 The downloader installs all the Great Battles series content on your PC in one go, only keeping non-purchased items locked, purchased items unlocked. So when you buy new things, nothing extra needs to downloaded. Do as Murf says above and you'll be fine.

Also I can no longer control tank turrets with mouse. Only vertical adjustment with joystick. If I go into settings and choose default does that reset tank controls only or aircraft settings as well? Thanks!

It means that you get the content as it is ready. Right now, the Battle of Normandy map isn't ready. Because you pre-ordered it, when it IS ready, you get access to it immediately, rather than wait for release. Right now, the only thing out so far for BoN is the P-47D-22, but the 190A-6 and Spitfire XIV are in pretty good shape, as well as the Typhoon, so we should see some of those in the next 3 or 4 months I think.
