Depends about what you know about WWII airplanes...

I guess searching some tutorial on YouTube is a good way, otherwise find some player that can help you in the first steps..

Have you bought it? downloaded the launcher and installed it? That would be a good start.

Hello Aces..

Forgive me in advance for this long read, it should express my passion, desire and true intent. I do so as to not waste anyones time.

First, an introduction. I'm Jeff, 50yrs old. I started gaming in '74 with pong and I've literally had every gaming console ever made and been hardcore gaming now for 40 years. When It comes to flight combat, my love for them started in 86 with the arcade game afterburner. Then Air combat and then Ace Combat. I've always been a console player, PS1,2,3 then in 07 i picked up an xbox360 specifically for Ace Combat 6, the first online multiplayer air to air combat game for consoles back when xbox live debuted. By 2008 I had risen to the top and became ranked 3rd worldwide in ace combat6 multiplayer. My gamertag SAAM I AM came from ace combat from my usage of the SAAM Missle (semi active air to air).

I would host $1,000 weekly tournaments and pay from my pocket. My shoulder patch was fan made and is now a part of the ace combat unit patches. It displays dr suess surfing atop an FA18 and holding a telephone pole rocket (i was famous for saying "Beware my exploding telephone pole").

In 2009, the first IL2 was released on xbox and I was literally the first player to set up a multiplayer match.. Lots of growing pains back then in IL2 multiplayer..  Needless to say, I love air to air combat.

Fast forward to 2019 and after returning to the good ole US of A after a 9 year living in the philippines, I find myself buying an Oculus Rift and became a PC Gamer. VR, air combat, I was like F yeah!!!! First I downloaded war thunder, (free, vr support) I hadn't yet picked up a flight stick and so when I saw it was mouse controlled I was like WTF???? No thanks... insta uninstall.. I didnt have the cash yet for il2 but was stoked to see it has vr support.

In the meantime I discovered Aces High III. It has VR support and touch controller support.. Super fn cool to grab the stick and throttle inside the cockpit and fly.. well thats captured my attention to the tune of 4 to 6 hours per day, every day 7 days a week for the past 20 months.. The servers never get more than 150players, the community is toxic and full of 20yr aces high diehards and the developer is a dick to his customers.. it was my love of dogfighting that keeps me there, that and the great vr..

Well, about 6 months ago I finally got IL2 BOS, bought a Thrustmaster HOTAS T FLIGHT 4 specifically to play IL2.. I couldn't wait to play IL2 again.. 6 months now Ive had IL2 and have yet to play even the first campaign mission, not a single quick mission, nothing, nada zip zero... It is not from lack of effort or interest. It is because I cant get my damn HOTAS TFlight 4 setup. Ive never in my life had a zero luck setup of anything.. ever..

I dont get it??. A game with such attention to detail, incredible graphics, humungous community and the litteral worst controller set up I have ever seen in any game ever. No I'm not trying to dog IL2. I love the game and desperately want to get in and mix it up with you killers but I cant get my damn stick to work.. What makes it worse is that I am forced to play the game through Steam and steam doesn't support any HOTAS.. How does that make any sense? Steam doesnt support HOTAS BUT in steams settings under controller general settings it sees and lists my TFlight Hotas 4 by name but when you click it.... not a single button is bound.. so open IL2 to Play, open settings,  click controllers and I see joystick is checked so cool... start a quick mission, hit P to unpause and..... Nothing.. flight stick does nothing. No buttons work no axis, nothing..

For 6 months now Ive tried to figure this out and am no closer today than 6 months ago.. Can't find any solution on google, youtube, forum... for the love of blowing shit up SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME.. Help me get my stick set up, recruit me and you get a dedicated 10year USMC Veteran Diehard 50yr old gamer to take up wing with you 4 to 6 hours a day as fierce as a pitbull and loyal as a Marine. My system specs are good but none the less here they are..

cpu - core i5 9400 3.4ghz

gpu - gxt 980 6gb ddr5 strix

ram 32gb

ssd 500gb specifically for IL2 only

2tb ssd for everything else

windows 10

Oculus Rift S

HOTAS  Thrustmaster T Flight HOTAS 4

my steam id is SAAM_I_AM   Add me as a friend, send me a message

my email is jeffrox34  at gmail

If you have a mapping profile I can put into my files that would be awesome.. I so desperately want to stop playing Aces High and start playing IL2 again but Ive thrown in the towel.. after 6 months, it has beaten me... I turn now to you good sirs.. please help me.

Respectfully,

Don't worry, this solvable. We can fix it step by step.

Launch Il-2 and go to SETTINGS and then KEY MAPPING.

There, you should be able to bind your control axes. For example, you'll find pitch, roll, and yaw in "Plane controls". Click on whichever control you want to bind and move the axis on your controller.

Feel free to ask more questions if you run into trouble.

Thank you for the quick reply friend.. I have tried mapping that way but when I click the individual function and move the stick nothing happens.. il2 doest even see my stick. No button press no throttle movement, trigger pull.. nothing at all.

Ok.. so this is new.. and confusing.. not sure what to do here..

And what is a joystick noise filter??? Why dont the developers put in descriptions?. Am i the only person alive that doesnt know what joystick noise filter is?. What do I set this on?

UPDATE 1102pm...

and yet another unsuccessful gut wrenching failed attempt. As you can see in the picture above it clearly recognized my TFlight HOTAS 4.. and i clicked cancel there because i dont want my flight stick to be a xbox360 controller...

fired up quick mission, start, unpause and.....

NOTHING... no button, stick trigger.. nothing.. what the heck is wrong here.. why does il2 recognize my hotas but nothing works in game...

ive never been more frustrated..

Yup been there, saw that, followed its instructions to the letter when i first got the stick. Verified all drivers and firmware is good... tried the stick with aces high and it was plug and play.. instant recognition and usage.

Hi Jeff, not sure if this will help but have you got your Xbox controller plugged in too? If so then I’d unplug it before trying to set up your stick in game.  Good luck and let’s hope you get it sorted!?

Hi, I haven’t played IL-2 in a long while and I just got a new gaming computer and I have been buying all the campaigns,Battles,Aircraft’s on the Website and on steam. Will all the stuff I bought show up in the game when I get it all installed ? What other than registering the add-on’s would I need to do? Thanks for your help!

Hey guys, bit of a noob here, just want to ask a quick couple questions:

1. Why do I stall during dogfights? I don't feel like I'm pulling the stick too hard, maybe hitting like 6G. Using full elevator trim helps a bit but I still feel like I'm missing something

2. How much engine management should I expect on multiplayer servers? I'm not super fond of managing mixture, rads, supercharger, propeller pitch etc, I'm just looking for a bit of fun. What servers should I be looking to join?

Thanks in advance!

Stalls are induced by your wings reaching their critical angle of attack, G-forces have no direct influence on a stall and are therefore a bad indicator of when one might occur.
Though 6 Gs is no small amount and is more than enough to induce a blackout in a regular person- which in itself is an indication that you're turning far too quickly and likely bleeding speed.

In short, if you're consistently stalling in dogfights you are pulling back too hard.
However, there are ways to spot a stall before it occurs- as well as improve a given planes turning performance with a bit of practice.

First off, in any sort of maneuvering fight you always want to make sure you keep the aircraft coordinated.
This will stop sharp turns from becoming a skid or a slide which might then result in a steeper angle of attack for one wing and therefore induce an early stall or even a spin if the lack of coordination is too severe.

You can check whether your aircraft is coordinated via the ball on the attitude indicators pictured here:

Spoiler

Coordinated: 1082271736_turnandslipindicator.jpg.93febdac21f416f8e8035c62f6de7cc9.jpg     Uncoordinated: 1227582970_turnandslipindicator2.jpg.b69ba229845e9f3bbe9a99b545d8ed3e.jpg

When in a turn, you'll notice the ball in the lower track might move to the left or right depending on the direction and severity of your turn- this means you are uncoordinated.
In order to fix it you have to provide some rudder input generally in the same direction as the turn, the idea is to always keep the ball in the center.
The amount of rudder required will vary depending on the aircraft as well as things like speed, bank angle/pitch, throttle position, and even environmental factors like wind.
If you practice it enough however, the rudder inputs will eventually become instinctual- and even then there's nothing stopping you from glancing down mid fight to check and adjust.

Furthermore, if you're in a sharp turn and you feel the plane beginning to shake or shudder then thats indicative of an impending stall and is your cue to let off the stick.

Additionally, if you want to be competitive in multiplayer, constantly diving headlong into turn fights and bleeding off tons of energy is universally never the answer.
Energy and speed are king in the larger multiplayer servers, and getting stuck into a low and slow fight will near uniformly result in a prompt bouncing.
As such it would be in your interest to practice boom and zoom tactics and more vertically oriented fighting (something which works on the AI as well).

Finally, if your preferred method of fighting remains constant sharp turns and high G loads then you'll want an aircraft more capable in that style of combat.
That would mean a plane like the I-16, any model of Yak, Spitfire, and the Bf-109 F4- among a few others.

This varies depending on the settings of any given server.
Most larger campaign-esque servers such as TAW, Combat Box, and WoL run expert settings which require a bit of management.
However, this also depends on the aircraft you choose to fly, and if you truly hate complex management you can stick to planes which do it for you like the Bf-109.

Those severs I've listed are a bit more competitive though, and if you just want furballs and harmless fun I'd recommend Berloga Duel and Dogfight which is pretty much the IL-2 equivalent of a giant deathmatch.

I see, it hadn't occured to me that my tail may be in the wrong place but now that you mention it I realize I was hardly touching my rudder. Thank you for the tip!

I'll try to do some singleplayer missions with expert controls before I even try to do that in multiplayer, but that is my end goal.

Hello all, Just wanted to share my experience of going multi player for the first time.

Like most of us, I found myself with a lot of time spare at home this year so I endeavored to build myself a sim.  My philosophy was simple--go big or go home.

So over the next few months I pieced this beastie together and installed IL-2 Sturmovik with all DLC's, IL-2 1946, DCS World with most modules, X-Plane, MS-X with room for more.  Still very much a work in progress.  My Warthog HOTAS is due to arrive Friday replacing the "toy like" T.16000.  When It was up and running, I dubbed it 'Forbin'.

(The first person to get that obscure reference wins bragging rights for life!)

While I'm a competent pilot in real life and sims, I'm most definitely not a combat pilot so was hesitant to go multi.  So I practiced, and practiced, and........  I got familiar with the game and aircraft but eventually my learning curve against the A.I. began to plateau.  Time to take this show on the road!  Now about my hesitancy.

I just knew that as soon as I spawned in I would be shot up, ridiculed and berated.  So I spawned in and was immediately shot up by a plane strafing the field before I could even get the engine started.  Welcome to Multi. *sigh*.  But then the strangest thing happened.  The chat window opened with a one word message "Salute!"  Instead of being ridiculed and berated, I was being thanked for participating.  So I spawned in again and this time managed to get airborne before being immediately shot up.  Baby steps!  I spent a good part of the day exploring servers, spawning in and being taken to school.  Eventually I  found myself on the Training server where a few fellows were playing around at Pilotage.  They had the smoke on and were in close formation low over the river.  Eager for some formation experience, but wanting to be respectful, I followed at what I hoped was a polite distance.  They noticed, and instead of asking me to back off, I was invited so slide in and join the formation.  I'm not sure if they knew what they were getting into.   All  the while messages of encouragement coming across the chat.  Then I was asked to take Lead.  I was incredibly honored. (However in retrospect, they may have just wanted me up front where they could keep an eye on me ?)  After a bit we knocked it off and just screwed around and had fun. These people took what had the potential to be a negative experience and were very welcoming and encouraging.  I have not asked for permission to use their player names here, so won't.  They know who they are.  I did reach out on my own to them,  so ?

So in closing this rather long winded entry, If you are hesitant to go multi you are depriving yourself of most of what this game has to offer.  Jump in.  Are you going to be shown no mercy in the air?  Yup.  Are you going to have your butt served up on a platter?  Beyond doubt.  Will you learn something every time?  Guaranteed.   Will you run into other players rooting you on and encouraging?  My experience would suggest yes, your mileage may very.  A Lot depends on you.  You can help grease the way by observing SuperChief's  Three Simple Rules:

1. Be Humble in Victory

2. Be Gracious in Defeat

3. Don't be THAT guy

Thanks for the warm welcome Fellas!

I applied in 2016, however, I was unable to actively participate. I have since re-awakened my interest in flight sims and I am ready to do whatever it takes to "fly" again. Please walk me through the re-activation steps.

Hello guys and gals,

I'm coming back to flight sim after a long hiatus (20+ years....) and I need some advice. I hope I'm in the right place and wouldn't want to bother you.

I'm looking for a WWII flight sim and after some research I found 3 products that would interest me. IL2 Great Battles, IL2 CoD blitz and the tobruk xpac and DCS. I've read many reviews, some forum posts and watch numerous videos. I can't really decide which game I should go for. I've pretty much encountered the whole spectrum of reviews....

Sadly I've kinda spent all my money on a new computer, HOTAS, rudder pedals and a head tracker is soon to follow, so I cannot buy the 3 games - which would solve all my problems.

I'll mostly fly WWII planes. I'm looking for a great flight and damage model, "realistic" AI, some campaign and multiplayer possibility. Cockpit "clickability" is not a must since there isn't much interaction in a WWII plane.

So I'm turning to you since I cannot decide which game I should pick up first.

Thank you very much.

The IL-2 are now in a big discount (Great Battles and Cliffs of Dover series), I would recommend you buy the IL-2 Great Battles modules that attract you the most and the IL-2 Cliffs of Dover with Desert Wings Tobruk, and if you do not have enough, at least the Great Battles module that attracts you the most and the CloD Blitz alone, that would be in total only about 20 dollars, check the store

Well it seems that I'm weak :) and I'll buy all 4 of them since it's indeed on sale. I'll go with the standard version as it seems the extra planes are not available during the campaign mode.

I recommend the P38 but the Hurricane ix outclassed because of the limited choice of ammo (I mean it doesn't have the DeWilde). Also, all the collector planes are available

Once you use Steam you have to start the sim through Steam to see any/all modules you buy direct from IL2 (and you have to link them to Steam during the install IIRC). Better off fixing your card and get everything through IL2, plus your badges won't show for Steam purchases here... ?

Yeah, I don't want to use steam.

I've contacted my bank so it seems it's not on their side that there is a problem but rather on Xsolla. So I brought up a ticket and waiting for the reply.
