The sun is shining

I don't know if you plan to do anything about the shine of the sun, but for some time as soon as I look close to the sun in VR, it's all white all around, it even crushes the colors of the ground etc, and this unbearable effect disappears as soon as you zoom in.
It's really annoying to have to constantly zoom in 20 or 30 degrees towards the sun.
THANKS

Yep sun is too bright. And probably too large in size relatively. But this game is weird with sizing of objects, especially in vr. I wish they would address it but I’m guessing it’ll never get touched after the graphics patch last year.

The sun in this game is simply broken in VR, period. 1C tweaked this effect on a monitor, and did not account for larger fov in VR.

Here's the cockpit on a computer monitor:

2022_3_15__21_9_45.jpg

And here's exactly the same angle in VR

2022_3_15__21_5_55.jpg

The image in vr is completely washed out even though the sun is at the same angle in both screenshots. But the sun effect is badly implemented and instead of relying on sun angular position relative to where you look at, it depends on how much sun in inside the screen area. Since VR has much more vertical FOV, we end up constantly blinded by the sun even if not looking at it.

I asked about this, and this is the response from our QA guys:

This is how HDR works, as far as I know, nothing to do with how he thinks sun effect should be implemented. He could try disabling it.

Hi,

there are some Mods because of this issue available.

https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/55027-the-sun/

https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/78250-sun-flare-mod/

I am using this: sun.zip

It is NOT my invention. I think it is from one of the mentioned links and I just named it.

On my computer it works well with Rift-S.

Thanks, but these won’t work in MP which I mostly fly in. So unless the officially do something about it I can’t use those mods online.

Thanks for checking it with the team, but no, this has little to do with HDR, and it's just a badly implemented sun effect. HDR only makes it worse.

Here are several shots at the same angle, same hour (16:00), without HDR, and with bloom disabled in the cfg. Just different FOV in game.

Zommed in, no sun glare:

Zoom out slightly, suddenly there's some sun rays where there weren't any before:

Zoom out as far as you can on a monitor, there's some glare, but relatively manageable.

Stock VR view. Even more glare, everything is washed out including the dash and the cockpit floor, and we're stuck with it. The FOV is fixed in VR by definition and the glare will continue as long as the sun is in the wide field of camera view.

image.thumb.jpeg.fa4b5a8d1fdbf6a3efbf87a12cda55d6.jpeg

The sun effect kicks in only if the sun is inside the monitor area and it washes out the whole screen area, regardless of FOV. The result is that people in VR end up being blinded by the sun effect several times more often that when using a small monitor.

Thanks @kraut1, I'll check the mod.

Here's another example that better shows the on/off nature of the sun effect in Il-2. It only activates if the sun is inside the rendered area.

Head down, zoomed out cockpit view on a monitor, looks ok, no sun glare because the sun is above, outside the field of view.

Same angle in VR. We're blinded by the sun when looking down inside the cockpit. It's ridiculous. You may be looking in a completely different direction, but as soon as the sun gets in the view at the corner of the screen, boom, the white filter is applied everywhere.

Did you have HDR on for those screenshots?  If so, does turning HDR off help any?

Please Devs , we need your help with this problem for the good of our eyes health.

Hdr was off except for the last two screenshots. Turning off hdr makes parts of the image darker, that helps offset a bit the sun effect, but does not fix it.

BTW did you ever try the sun size correction mod from LizLemon? sun size correction.zip

Tip, use JSGME etc, as it changes textures ..

This has been broken since the new PBR sky and clouds were introduced, which was a big step forward, but this is a big problem.
