FlyingNutcase Posted August 3, 2023 Posted August 3, 2023 Hi Team, I've been PC-less for about a year and a half. I was planning to buy a high-end VR rig later this year, but VR clearly still needs time to mature so now I'm thinking of buying a simple rig (to use with my Track IR & 1440pp monitor) that will run IL2 well, and DCS, FS2020 and FS2024 well enough. I noticed that the GTX4060 comes in at a nice price point (https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/WKSGGPC50139/GGPC-RTX-4060-Gaming-PC-Intel-i5-13400F-10-Core) but have also seen comments here and reviews elsewhere trashing it (I would upgrade that to 32GB RAM). So I was just hoping to get some feedback as to a "balanced" rig, no VR necessary - I would probably just buy a complete higher end PC in a couple of years for VR. Cheers.
spreckair Posted August 7, 2023 Posted August 7, 2023 Well, if I can build a PC, then almost anyone should be able to. And the benefit is that you can build something today that can be upgraded to VR down the road. There are lots of videos available online that show how easy it is to build your own, and how to choose parts. Plus, it is empowering and became a second hobby to IL-2. Just a thought.
cardboard_killer Posted August 7, 2023 Posted August 7, 2023 When I get a new PC, I usually start at Tom's Hardware's article on building a PC. Their latest dates from 8-July. I then research some things I may want to upgrade or find a brand I like better. Then I buy the parts I want, take them to my local computer guy and he puts it together for me and installs my OS for about $100 USD. I have put my own together in the past, but it's worth the hundred bucks not to have to deal with it. Best PC Builds for Gaming: From Sub $500 Budgets to $3500+ 1
FlyingNutcase Posted August 11, 2023 Author Posted August 11, 2023 hey thanks fellas for the feedback. @spreckair As much as build-your-own seems to be considered the way to go, I'm with @cardboard_killer on this one and will likely approach a local PC builder to build to a discussed spec. He can professionally tune and overclock it too, which I wouldn't dare attempt. It looks like going the extra distance for a 4080 might make more sense and upgrade as necessary in 2025 or so with the 5000 series. Or I'll just continue boardgaming for a couple more years. A tough decision. 1
spreckair Posted August 11, 2023 Posted August 11, 2023 @FlyingNutcase That sounds like a plan that makes great sense. Let us know how it all turns out. 1

Buy second hand GPU and CPU easy win You can grab a 3080 or a 3080 ti second hand for an excellent price compared to anything new also overclocking is dead you are looking at maximum of 10% extra performance for a lot of work and power consumption I do it, but I go for world records and I'm a nutter Second hand CPU is basically zero risk if you can get a 9-10-11 gen intel or an amd 5xxx you will save a lot of money If you in chch I can help you out Edited September 17, 2023 by RossMarBow 1
FlyingNutcase Posted September 22, 2023 Author Posted September 22, 2023 @RossMarBow Thanks for your input - much appreciated. I'm in Ackld but my roots are in Chch and visit family & friends roughly twice a year - October next. I'll look at the second hand option. At the mo there's so much going on I'm not likey to have any flying time for the rest of the year anyway so PC stuff is unfortunately on the backburner.
