PhilthySpud Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 While I’m loving the new Normandy map, the sea is pretty much like a millpond with all the hazard that brings for judging height. I seem to remember reading somewhere that different sea states are actually possible - maybe @Hamaha15? My questions are: a. Is it in fact possible to have different sea states? b. If it is, how do you set it? It would be nice to have some whitecaps on a body of water renowned for them. 1
Hamaha15 Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 Good morning, a picture to illustrate the above said: However, I have not played with different sea states yet. I don't know to which extent these settings change the appearance of the water surface. I tried to simulate floodings, e.g. on the Scheldt islands but I found no credible way to do so.

PhilthySpud Posted September 18, 2022 Author Posted September 18, 2022 Thanks chaps! @=gRiJ=Roman- I would certainly support that suggestion if it’s possible.

IckyATLAS Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 Wind strength and direction is independent from Sea State and wave direction. In the Editor you can modify wind speed and direction but only the sea state. This creates the situation where you can have howling winds say going full east, and a totally calm sea. As the waves go always in a given fixed direction, then you can have again strong winds in a completely opposite direction of the waves. Now this is not completely absurd when wind direction does change or if wind has gone down quickly and you still have a wavy sea remnant of a storm, but it would have been nice to have sea and wind on similar directions. A positive upgrade here compared to previous maps is that you can have harbors were water is calm even if the sea state is very bad. The only negative thing here is that the color of the rivers, lakes and harbors have an extremely strong muddy color. For harbors that is not realistic and it should be toned down a bit. When a river does enter the sea it is realistic to have a patch that has a more muddy color, but again I feel the color is too strong and the contrast between sea color and the harbor or the river mouth flowing in the sea should should have patch of sea with less strong color.. I suppose here that the map modelling tool maybe does not allow for an easy solution to these issues. Having an intermediary color between sea and river color in a region of the sea outside the river mouth may not be possible to do. If yes then it should be part of the future map improvements. 1
Stonehouse Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 It's off topic but related - it would also be good to have prevailing winds and smoke linked. Currently smoke direction can be set to differ to the wind and spawned smoke effects via staticexplosions.txt always goes north regardless of wind presumably because the smoke direction defaults to 0 deg. These sorts of things should really default to the defined wind direction and be overridable if the mission designer wants them different for some reason. 2 5
