IL2 VR stuttering and ghosting despite high FPS

Hello, I experience wired problems where ASW is turned off, my quest 2 is running at 72Hz and I have 45-60 fps. Despite this I experience stuttering and ghosting when rolling and the ground lags behind, meaning looking at the ground feels like 20ish fps. A similar effect is noticeable when passing enemy planes and they ghost or lag behind, effectively making them appear in double vision. This happens despite ASW being turned off via the debug tool. ASW on increase this effect noticeably. I’ve tried turning resolution down or refresh rate up but nothings seems to help.

I run a oculus quest 2 on Max resolution, 72Hz, no SS or AA, 2070 Super, Ryzen 3700X, 32GB RAM, Settings on balanced/medium.

Has anyone experienced something similar to this or knows any fixes?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Personally I don't use VR but I DO know that if you're recording at all that this increases workload quite considerably.
Not much help I know, but I thought I'd just call that one up for reference.

Yep :)

Nope :(

I've wondered about this too. It does seem to be connected to the workload even though the FPS stays up. I've noticed it less often when there are fewer aircraft flying.

All I know and keep saying is since the latest hot fixes the performance and visual quality dropped.. but I don’t see it being addressed anywhere

I haven't really noticed any performance hit myself, but I've seen multiple people reporting this so it seems that at least for some people, the performance has indeed reduced.

But what is this visual quality drop you're talking about? The visual quality hasn't changed a bit with the latest hotfix, and I haven't seen many people complain either. If you notice a quality drop, perhaps something got corrupted on your install?

Some things I did that made the game feel smooth.

Turning off "Force Mipmap Generation on all layers"

Disabling Oculus Home (enable oculus homeless) in Oculus Tray Tool, this will free up some VRam

Use Opencomposite and running game without SteamVR

OpenComposite is *fantastic* and works absolute wonders. However, my cable is a bit buggy so my Quest 2 tends to disconnect every once in a while and OVR+IL2 can't handle it, crashing IL2 (no problems with Dirt Rally 2 though; there I can just reconnect the cable and play on). Any chance anyone has any ideas I might try??

I have noticed that my position in the cockpit is now drifting around more; this has been happening in the past two days.  At one point I was outside the cockpit.  I was playing in a bright room, so I don't think that it was a tracking issue.  I also had high FPS.  I am using a Reverb G2, so not quite the same.  Is anyone else experiencing this?

I use a Reverb g2 and have not noticed what you're describing. That is odd

@40plus Thank you for the input.  No problems today, so I it seems to have been an anomalous glitch.

@spreckair @40plus If you're using the Reverb and they're drifty, then close the game, and restart VR from the WMR app (can't remember what it's called off the top of my head) and make sure to run it's start-up room check.

If you launch VR directly from IL-2, sometimes it doesn't finish it's calibration before it puts you in the game.

If you've got juddering in WMR, then going into the Steam VR room and setting it to Force Dx11 will sometimes help.

Also in the Windows settings, check to make sure Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) is turned off. Sometimes windows decides to be stupid and randomly grab priority from the active VR window to, as near as I can tell, ask the GPU to tell it whether or not the active VR window should have priority.

@Voyager  Thank you very much.  I will look into your suggestions.

The question is, how do you know what fps you have while rolling ? I mean in VR you have to look right and up if you want to see FPS. But when I look right and up in VR I am usually facing the sky and my FPS goes up significantly. So I can imagine that the FPS goes down while you look around a lot in VR and you can' t even see the counter at that time.

I actually had exactly the same problem as you described but got kinda used to it. After reading your post I thought maybe I should try to do something about it , so I tuned down my graphics settings a bit and I would say it helped too. (I just  switched shadows hight > medium , and tuned down the Distant landscape detail.

Enable the frametiming overlay in steamvr and/or set it to save the frametime log.
