Maybe I'm just an idiot and unable to find it, but is there a way to view the pilot profiles of Dead is Dead pilots after they meet their final fate and have submitted their last combat report?

I know you can resurrect them with the activate function to do so, but this obviously messes the squad up.

That is not available right now

I just did something along those lines: I added a chalk board option that shows only the player personas, dead or alive.  Good for coop and those who have more than one pilot in an campaign.

For everything else like journals and such I would have to allow the player to designate a dead pilot as the reference pilot.  Is that what you are looking for?

Thank you Pat - That is a nice addition.  Along with this, would it be a possible future feature to add an "Epitaph" to the Pilot log reflecting the pilot fate for that final mission that just pulls it from the Squadron Log entry?  I have always thought it would be a nice immersion feature when looking at the deceased/captured/disabled Aces.

I would just use the narrative section of the combat report.

That would be great.  Since I think you are killing off the historical aces on their actual death date, if you do decide to implement this entry on under the status for the aces logs also, I would be happy to do the research for something to include for them too (since they won't eliminated in a combat report).  If you get to that point, just let me know how many characters I have to work with.

Pat - Just one final thought on this, and maybe a "bridge too far" just to get a small immersion feature, but I think the enemy squadron log does contain more specific info about the death/fate of the our pilot.  In the case below, this is from the "killing" JG6 Squadron Log (of course I actually don't know what the Combat Narrative Report would show for my deceased pilot Edmonds since we currently only see those for our Active guys).  Anyway, thanks for even thinking about it. :)

Want to make sure we are on the same page since my documentation and advertising skills are ... ahem ... suboptimal.  The narrative capability already exists.  You can write whatever you want in the narrative section of the combat report.  No limit.  If you want to rewrite the complete works of Shakespeare PWCG will save it.

There are two places you can write a narrative.  The first is during the AAR process when the combat report is displayed.  The second is in the journal - you can do this any time that you want.

Sorry Pat, my fault, I shouldn't have used the term "epitaph."  My very poor wording was to see if for deceased/captured/disabled pilots (including eliminated Aces), you could add a new Pilot Log/Dossier Field to take the type of entry below from the "killing" enemy squadron's log reflecting that pilot's demise:

and add that new field in the spot reflected below to show the reason for their fate (since it is already recorded as reflected above elsewhere in PWCG):

Of course this can wait for you to finish this weekend's 150,000 lines of code and your funding the Pacific expansion.  It appears  @Thad and I hold you in the same regard! :salute:

Hi Pat, new user for PWCG here. Truly fantastic work. To echo many others the journal narrative feature ended up increasing the immersion factor for me way more than I could have expected!

I just played through the first run of my first campaign as Dead is Dead and unfortunately died while being greedy chasing a bomber. Was there ever an update to allow us to view the journals of dead pilots? I really enjoyed building the story for that pilot and would love the chance to see it again, was surprised to see that the journal also became inaccessible after the pilot died since they can no longer be a reference pilot.

That is an interesting idea.  The record of the your pilot (in fact, every pilot, human or AI) is maintained through out the campaign.  I'm not sure what I do with the journal entries, but they are probably there too.  I'll have to see how everything can be put together.

Yeah, the journal entries are definitely all still there for me in the json files (under "User\Campaigns\Campaign_Name\CombatReports\#######\*.json"). I've always thought it was a neat idea to be able to pretend that your current pilot came across the journal entries among the belongings of their former and fallen comrades describing their stories throughout the war. But in any case, I would love to see a way to view these old journal entries within the program itself (maybe as a "museum" of sorts) if you happen to spare some time to incorporate a feature like this. Thanks again for all that you do, the campaign generator has really brought the game to life in a big way for this single player pilot!

If you are considering this, it would be great to see if it could pull together the info to show who the "killing" pilot was from the enemy squadron log info.  Sorta "Under the guns of the Red Baron" style for the final "Pilot Dossier" entry between the "Pilot Status" and "Air Victories" fields.  (See my 7/18/21 post above - I think that info is already generated by PWCG, but of course I don't know if it is worth your time to copy it over into the dossier).  Thanks as always for what you do here!
