Dagwoodyt Posted July 12, 2021 Posted July 12, 2021 I'm using an i7 6800k @ 4gh and am wondering whether a 3080 would give any detectable improvement in fps or image quality for my Index. Currently I can use Ultra settings with clouds off for simple DF quick missions.
dburne Posted July 12, 2021 Posted July 12, 2021 It will help. Whether by how much is worth it to you only you will be able to say really.
TheSNAFU Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 I just went from a 1080 non ti to a 3080 and the difference is definitely worth it for me. Back to running the game at ultra settings with almost everything cranked up to the max. On a Quest 2 and running 100% render resolution and 1.6 Super Sampling. The game looks really good and runs smooth at over 70 FPS most of the time. The 1080 did surprisingly well but there were concessions that had to be made.
ICDP Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 (edited) I went from a 2080 to a 3080 and there was a decent jump in VR but I am pairing it with a 5900X Ryzen CPU. Your 6800K CPU could be a limiting factor unless you are using higher resolutions such as 4K or a G1 or G2 VR HMD. Edited July 13, 2021 by ICDP
chiliwili69 Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 I went from 1080Ti to 3080 using an Index at 80Hz and having a 5600X CPU. The improvement in noticeable since I can increase the SteamVR%SS from 120 to 150 and have clouds at High without losing a single frame (always at 80fps). I can also use MSAAx2 instead of FXAA. But with my previous 1080Ti I was also quite happy with the Index. Perhaps as said by ICDP, in your case the CPU is more the limiting factor. You can visualize that while you play with fpsVR.
SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 If you can shoot a 3080 that does not cost an arm and a leg, do it. Check this out
Dagwoodyt Posted July 13, 2021 Author Posted July 13, 2021 Thanks all. I know my cpu is outdated, a longer term project though.
firdimigdi Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 IMHO with the current market situation you&d be better off upgrading CPU and getting a speedy set of RAM modules first. It'll definetely increase your framerate and cost less than a new GPU these days.
SCG_Redcloud111 Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 I went from a 1080ti to a 3080. Major improvements that you will definitely notice.

simfan2015 Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 (edited) I honestly believe the price is just about right ... if you remove that period from it ! ? That or ... the price has been like that since 1999. BTW maybe 'jojo' alo refers to ... pricing going up and down I guess ... maybe each time you click 1000 USD is added to it. mattswe Posted July 15, 2021 Posted July 15, 2021 I just updated from gtx1080 to rtx3080ti, using vive 2. It's totally worth it. The graphics gets a lot crisper (being able to use the higher vive 2 resolution). I now can max out (more or less) the graphics settings, nice. All in all it gets more immersive and easier to spot the bad guys. 1
354thFG_Drewm3i-VR Posted July 15, 2021 Posted July 15, 2021 (edited) Adding on to this thread...I'm also currently looking for a GPU and see that the 2080 TI is less than the 3060Ti/3070/3070 Ti on ebay and was wondering if this would be a better performing card in vr because of the superior memory bus and extra memory capacity? In the synvander benchmarks it looks to be close or have a slight edge. My cpu is a ryzen 5800x with 32 gb 3600mhz ram running cl 16 timings so I'm good there. I'm running a reverb g2 for the record. YouBet Posted July 15, 2021 Posted July 15, 2021 I've run IL-2 in VR on a 1080, a 2080 Ti and a 3090. Noticed a bigger jump in performance moving from 1080 to 2080 Ti. The 3090 is nice, though... As was mentioned previously, though, the most noticeable increase in performance came when I upgraded to a speedy 32Gb of RAM (from a lazy 16Gb).

Really? Do you think it is just the doubled memory size or do you think faster ram over slower ones actually are perceivable?

What brand memory are you running? I'm reading that Samsung B sourced memory is better suited to Ryzen than Micron sourced memory. It's a bit confusing.

Not a Ti, but I used to run IL-2 with a 2080 Super and used to get decent performance with balanced settings (low clouds med mirrors) and steam SS at 100%. Moscow map was always 90 FPS, Bodenplatte would go to 50-ies on take off and when flying close to larger cities as Brussels, and then to 60-ies when dogfighting near large formation (9 bombers, 8 allied and 3-4 axis). If the price is not outrageous (I haven’t checked scamBay lately), 2080Ti would be a nice stop gap till the next generation arrives mid-late Q3 2022 if rumor is to be believed. in the meantime, I recommend entering Newegg shuffle everyday for non overpriced cards, and depending on where you are, entering micro center shuffle/lottery when you can. MicroCenter lotteries are basically the only retail chain that would get you a card at msrp, and Newegg shuffle is close when they don’t tag a $800 1080p monitor as a “bundle”. The good thing is, stock is becoming a bit more and coupled to that, and as you noticed, scalping prices are coming down. If I were an optimistic person, I’d say one may even be able to get a current generation card at or near MSRP in 3-4 months.

I don't know if the cpu and ram timing are limiting factors in that setting. Upgrading cpu and ram means a new system build.
firdimigdi Posted July 17, 2021 Posted July 17, 2021 I'd refer to And @chiliwili69's knowledge of such. If you just care about IL2 and do nothing else with your PC a GPU upgrade will of course yield an increase in performance. I'm just commenting on the value for money upgrade at this time.

I can get a 2080 ti for around 1k used or refurbished or a 3070 for around 1k and a 3070 ti oc for like $1,150. A 3080 is around $1,500, or twice msrp. I think what I'm going to do is a buy a card with returns from amazon and return it every month until prices come down. Damn these scalpers.

Right now there’s a refurb i7 10700F, 3070 msi desktop for $1650 (I think) on woot. The ones with 2070 and the such are around 1k mark. If you want to deal with parting what you don’t need out, might not be such a bad deal. I’ve had people report catching an Amazon drop and purchasing cards at msrp, but it’s becoming rarer and rarer.

One of the points I was trying to make with that post was that fine tuning your major PC components (not necessarily upgrading everything in sight) can make a useful contribution to IL2 performance. Also admitted that going to the four times more expensive G.Skill 32 Gb memory was pretty much a side grade as i already had the Patriot Viper (4400Mhz model but no AMD XMP profiles) running at 15-14-14-14-28 at 3800Mhz, did need to increase VDIMM 1.48v for them to be stable though. So, yes the G.Skill RAM was a bit of a slippery slope job at least for IL2. Note to =AW=drew3i the Patriot Viper RAM does suffer a bit from the Silicon lottery and some sets perform better than others. Hopefully this is the link to the original post I am referring to Link to the youtube video that showed me how to undervolt a Ryzen 5000 chip with recent motherboard bios installed, So easy! Note I settled for an Allcore undervolt as I found undervolting individual cores a pain in the ..........

Far be it from me to give financial advice, but those prices are really hard to swallow… if I wasn’t intent on keeping my 2080 Super as a back up, I would have sold it to you for its market value (not the scalper dictated “market” value, but what a normally used, 3 month old card should fetch), but I feel I need to keep it just in case. @javelina, better lucky than good works for GPU acquisition, as well as combat gunnery right? I think there’s even a Ferengi rule of acquisition that mentions that Edited July 18, 2021 by kissTheSky
