When I try and open a mission file I get an error

Error reading Mission File

I tried the previous suggestion of under tools "save all mission files" but that did not seem to work?

Any advice?

Ok so I re read the instructions on the mission re-save utility and it now appears to be doing something to the files, hopefully they will all be ok when it has weaved its magic...

Every update needs a 'Save Mission Files' before opening a mission in the ME. It works every time I use it.

yes, run that process and all good, phew! first time I had to do this...

Because of the addition of tactical codes that are stored in the mission file. The resaver is located in bin\resaver folder. If the 'resave folder' or 'convert missions to binary' functions in ME give you problems, try to delete *.msnbin files from these missions first and leave *.mission ones.

I tried it  it didn't work.

SITUATION:

Dogfight missions.

Deleted .msnbin file.

Reopened mission in ME.

Saved mission in ME.

Started game.

Created Dogfinght Server.

Put mission in que.

Loaded mission.

Got to the Briefing screen with home base showing.

Chose plane.

Got the moving wheel.

Wheel stopped,

Tired to setup plane or start mission.

Nothing happened.

Tried to re-choose plane.

Plane list didn't show, wheels spins, game frozen

Had to Task manager out of game.

At this time ALL of the missions I created are unplayable.

I would say more but I want to continue to be a part of the Community.

Discovered an error message loading the mission:

"LuaScripts/WorldObjects/Bots/TurretControlerTankMG_AI.txt"

Could this be what is causing this mission to not load?

If so how to fix it?

(P L E A S E don't say re-download the game.)

What mission was that? If it is a custom one, delete the .msnbin file and resave .mission file using mission editor or mission resaver.

Yes, Custom Dogfight Mission.

Deleted .msnbin file.

Reopened in ME.

Saved under new name in different folder.

Same result.  See attached.

This is a far as I can get.

Game is frozen and requires Task manager to exit.

Okay, re-saved all the missions w/o any problems. Opened a Rhineland Summer mission in the FME and only had time to check one item, it was a train at Mainz that was about 100 meters in the air. Opened a Rhineland Winter mission and a column of tanks had sunk completely below the road they were on, also, a train was partially submerged. So, be on the look-out for problems. The summer mission is in the town of Mainz, and the winter in the Mons area. Also, and I may be wrong here, train carriages do not show in the FME when in 3d mode. I could have sworn they were visible before.

Update: Appears to only affect the Rhineland map, similar to the situation with the Moscow map some time back? I did also discover that even with the problem in the FME that the mission objects spawn correctly when actually playing the mission, strange to say the least.

I remember with that Moscow map update a while back there was something with setting stuff 50 meters up or down with a keyboard input to be pressed 5 times ..

Same error in yet another self made Custom Dogfight mission.

That file is not in 'LuaScripts/WorldObjects/Bots', all I have are "pilotbotanbc a20b raf43/rus42/rus42/ruswi/usa43" files.

I own Tank Crew.

Do I have to totally remake all these missions? :scratch_one-s_head:

Frustration beginning to reach RTEL, (Ready To Explode Level).

I was not able to open any of my own missions after installing the patch.

I figured out it was the msnbin files causing the problem.  When I deleted the msnbin all my old missions worked fine.

So I take it with the New Update...Most/All 3rd party Missions and Scripted Campaigns are out the window/shite now?  :(

That's why mission generators are so convenient! ?

But to answer your question: No, they just need to be 're-saved'. You can do it in batch using the mission editor or, the more slow process: Delete all the .msbin versions of those missions. But the first time you will load a mission it will be very slow....

Narrowing the problem down.

It appears to be an issue with the A-20.

I get the same error message about the "TurretControllerTankMG_AI.txt" in QMB.

Other planes in missions, even those with rear gunners (IL-2, Pe-2 etc.) are fine.

In the missions that "won't open" if I choose any other plane but the A-20 I'm fine.

The A-20 is one of my favorite planes but is currently unusable.

What to do?

ADDENDUM:

I am also noticing that I have two instances of the .exe running if I choose the A-20 after another plane in QMB.

(this makes me hesitant in looking forward to future updates and the release of BoN and FC2)

At the risk of duplicating/repeating info that likely is posted elsewhere around here by several others in other sub-forums:

How to use the Re-Save Missions utility in the Mission Editor to make existing missions compatible with an IL-2 Update:

Every so often, when an IL-2 update adds to or changes the format of the binary mission files, pre-existing missions need to be re-saved to the new format in order to work again.  Overall this is a good thing for the community and mission designers who are given new features to integrate into their missions, although it can be disconcerting to users who aren't expecting it.  Fortunately, getting the existing (i.e. older) missions to work with an updated IL-2 program is pretty straightforward, and you'll need to use the Mission Editor as follows:

Navigate to your IL2 install folder and from there, locate the "bin" folder, and within that, locate the "editor" folder.  I.e., the path will be:
{Your Install Path}\IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad\bin\editor

G81y8TS.jpg

Locate the executable file named "STEditor" and double-click to launch.  The trusty Mission Editor (ME) will load and appear similar to the below:

From the Tools menu, select the option "Resave All Missions in Folder":

mKTzGMh.jpg

Within the dialogue box, navigate (once again) to your IL-2 folder, and then to the "data" folder, and then the "missions" folder:

V9hHRFT.jpg

You can select any single folder at a time to re-save missions.  After clicking on the folder name to highlight it, press OK:

rUUXQMm.jpg

...then let it chooch for however long it takes (it may take a few minutes for each mission in a folder, so be prepared to wait).

Once it's finished, you can re-save missions in other folders, or exit the ME and go fly the missions you've just re-saved, remembering that you may need to come back and repeat the process for other mission folders as needed.

Can anyone help with this puzzle.  I had created a simple mission which worked yesterday, but now , since the update, when I click on my created mission  when in the Missions menu, my mission gets selected, but gets hung up trying to load the mission and just sits there.  The missions that came premade work OK.  Is there a work around?  Or is there a way to test things and analyze what is now wrong?

     Appreciate any help,

Ted

The binary format changed, so neither the game nor the ME can read the old binary format.    Delete the binary file (msbin), load  the mission in the mission editor, and save it again.  This will generate a new binary in the new format.

@Beebop You are not reading carefully. You have to use the Resaver tool.. not just open the file in the ME and save it over. This will happen every time there is an update that requires code changes.

If it's a custom mission, open the ME, and go to the tools dropdown list and browse to the "resave all missions in folder" and then select your files. This is a task we all need to master to continue with progress.

Patience sir...

I notice that all my missions have been wiped clean since the latest update, and that's a lot of missions, its now another visit to the editor !

there has to be a better way of ensuring that they are not lost every time an update comes along !

1. Never start the game with the Launcher.  If you do the update begins automatically.

2. Use the regular Il-2.exe in 'bin > game'.  Make a shortcut to your desktop or other convenient place.  If an unanticipated update arrives you get the notification on the startup screen that you have to download the new version.

3.  Before updating backup your Missions/Multiplayer folders.  I also backup my 'input' folder in case the update messes with my keybinds.

@Jaegermeister, I tried everything but....problem solved.  It was (kind of) an A-20 problem.  It was (really) my problem.  I just didn't follow even my own advice.

Cause, broken Navigator Mod for the A-20 that lets you ride in the nose.  nice mod when it works, totally fecks up the A-20, heck the whole game when it doesn't.

So.....

My deepest apologies for getting so hot under the collar.  I can claim the game is so complex etc., etc. but the truth is I and only I am to "blame" for the error.

Someday, someday I'll actually put my brain in first gear before complaining that I can't move in fourth.  ?

Todays update made my saved flight records obsolete and un openable.   Is there a way to update them to the new system?

Posted

Hi,

today Im not able to run or edit my DogFight mission. When I want to start a self build mission on a multiplayer server it just stop and drops me back to the "select Coop or Dogfight" window. When I try to open the missions with STEditor it gives an error message "Error reading mission file!"

Hi - there are threads for this - you just need to run the "Re-Save All Missions" under Tools in the editor.

I got caught by this exact issue as well.

Sneaksie, go and see my post in the closed forum about the 4.601 public. Have a look on the second one.

Flight records run off mission files just like a custom mission. You would need to resave the mission files attached to the flight record the same way as your other missions. Run the resaver on the folder they are in and it should work.

If you start the game from the launcher and it starts downloading an update you aren’t ready for, just close out the launcher. It’s a temp file until it installs.

Make your backup, turn off any Mods, then restart the launcher and you are good. Leaving Mods installed for a patch has always created problems.

Just thought I would post this for the mission resaver utility as some people may find it useful.

Creates a powershell script to batch process the mission files with the resaver utility.

1) Open a powershell window (part of Windows 10, I think you need to download it from Microsoft for earlier versions of Windows)

2) Navigate to your data folder (i.e. C:\IL2\data)

3) run the following command in powershell (replace directories and the output file with your own. Make sure the output file has the .ps1 extension)

PS C:\IL2\data> get-childitem -recurse -filter "*.mission" | foreach-object {("& ""C:\IL2\bin\resaver\MissionResaver.exe"" -d ""C:\IL2\data"" -f """,$_.fullname,"""") -join ""} | out-file -filepath C:\il2ReSave.ps1

4) use notepad (or other text editor) to open the generated file (in this case C:\il2ReSave.ps1). Remove any missions you do not want to process and save the file.

5) from windows explorer right click the C:\il2ReSave.ps1 file and select "Run with powershell"

NOTE: In my case I deleted this record from the C:\il2ReSave.ps1 file at step 4

    & "C:\IL2\bin\resaver\MissionResaver.exe" -d "C:\IL2\data" -f "C:\IL2\data\Missions\_gen.Mission"
Not sure if it was necessary, but it looked like a special case mission file, so did not want to mess with it.

Also if you have a lot of mission files you may want to process 5 or 10 first to get a feel for the amount of time that will be required to process them all.

Resaving missions does work well. No problem with that except for some offsets on smoke effects with Y values completely screwed and some other issues on the maps.

But the main problem here is that with Resave Group Files does crash the editor to desktop. So all my mission group libraries cannot be resaved.

If I try to import a group created under the previous version in my mission it crashes immediately the editor.

How can we resave the group files? Is this a bug of the Editor in which case please correct this urgently.

I never had this issue in the past. The resave group file function did work before.

Odd.  I've never had a problem with Groups not working as intended after any update so I have never felt the need to use the 'Resave groups' feature.

Does your mission are on the Rheinland map in Summer, Spring or Autumn ?

If yes, that map crash the editor with these season. It works fine in winter.

My missions resave is working fine, no issues on that.

I have also huge libraries of group files. These groups where saved when working on the Kuban Summer map but also on various other maps over time.

The crash problem with the editor is when I use the Resave Group File function. All my saved group files were made with versions  4.5xx and sometimes even earlier.

There is also an immediate crash when I am on a Kuban Summer Map mission and want to import a group. The crashes are with groups that were saved just right before the update, not old ones.

But instead of importing if I use the group function to select a group and then I click on the map, no problem the group is copied on the map.

The difference between the two ways of doing is that Importation guarantees that the group will be precisely on the map at the same position of when it was saved.

So if you change map fine in that case you do not import but you simply copy the the group to a place that you define.

But when working on campaigns and that is multiple missions on the same map, importation is a major function very useful. This is why devs must also check these issues when changing mission formats.

Do you IMPORT the group or just copy the group selecting it in the group list?

Copying a group from the list into a map that works no problem.

It is importation that makes the ME crash.

I take them from the "Groups" list in the ME's right hand sidebar.

I understand what you mean now.
