IL-2 as a Profile Maker

I was inspired by @Jason_Williams profiles in the recent DD and decided to make my own, heavily Photoshopped of course. For a Work-In-Progress project they're actually coming along quite nicely. I had to create the drop tanks by hand, and they still need some serious work IMHO, but I'll square them away eventually. Thought I share some early WIP's for poops and giggles and to demonstrate what can be done with the tools provided by the developers.

Looking good! Might I inquire how did you get such almost(?) orthographic pictures? Combining several screenshots? In my skin viewer good resolution (zoomed in) pictures are so heavily distorted because of perspective that they are hardly usable. Is there some trick in skin viewer I'm unaware of?

I use a single screenshot imported into PS and render a 3D extrusion and normal map which I then overlay using different layer mask adjustments. You could go the easy way and apply a bevel/emboss, however I'm not entirely sure how that would turn out.

Eventually when I have a proper object viewer in the sim itself this kind of thing will take 2 seconds.

Are there plans to have the tanks viewable in the object viewer?

Det, if you are taking requests I am in need of a Heinz Bar, Red 13. I'll PM you for one suitable for framing and the appropriate recompense.

Rotate the camera so the aircraft can be seen top down. Middle mouse button move the aircraft object to the left of the white square 'cursor', then rotate back to the aircraft side view.

You should now see the white square in the foreground and the side of the aircraft quite a distance behind it in the background.

Now scroll the middle mouse wheel to zoom into the white cursor square.  When the camera reaches the square, press the 'zoom in' button on the top menu to enlarge the aircraft further.

Now you should be able to see the object without an over enlarged wing etc.. Hope it makes sense!

Thanks! That actually works quite well! I guess I've never even tried those zoom buttons as I thought that their function is the same as scroll wheel.

It's a 'foreshortening' issue I believe so yeah, your method does make sense! It's what I do all the time whenever viewing skins-in-progress.
