I still can recall note for note the soviet hangar theme.

Even now, both that and the Pacific Fighters theme still make my pulse go that little bit faster when I hear them.

I've jumped into Great Battles just recently, but years ago (might be even a decade...) i played a lot Il-2 1946 mainly on WarClouds server. I was a member of 79Vraf. Any of you guys frequented it as well? I wonder if i'll meet some old friends...

(edit: spelling corrections)

i remember the first time i played il-2 original back when i was 15years old along with the COD1 and medal of hornor pacific

rome total war1

technology got better

more resources doens't mean you get better games

these days all the games look same

and there's no search for innovation

what we have now is all done already back in the 2000s' whatever the franchise is

they jsut upgrade the visual(sucha as graphic and animation)

but there's no revolution in core gameplay anymore

I just received a Steam offer for a  full  "1946 "  box......It is almost free with the discount and the pictures feel really  nice,  but I wonder if it can run on a Win10 system ?

my IL2 and RoF are here _not Steam.

I attempted once to load my original CD,  but crashed the system ?

If anyone tried this Steam version, please help,  Thanks  !!!

Works for me fine, with B.A.T. mod installed you don't even need steam to run it.

Thanks for help,  i'd a look at B.A.T : very impressive but seems really big for my Disk......Just tried Steam ( $ 3 !) and it runs ok on win10 , but I hope to be able to find space for B.A.T  WWII fine birds !

Maybe I can provide a somewhat unique (and maybe unwelcome ;)) view on this, as a young IL-2 fan:

I remember running around (embarrassingly, retrospectively) on the playground with images of the IL-2 1946 trailer in my head, thinking about the wondrous Heinkel Lerche, and of the videos of air races and IL-2 crash shows (one has disappeared from the youtube which I dearly miss: I've never found the backing music - I can still hear it in my head ?).
This was only in 2011, 2012 or so, I'd hardly seen IL-2:GB until the summer of 2017, but all of that dreaming set me up to be the plane crazed engineering student I am today, so I'm happy for it.

So, now my question to you: feel old yet? ?

If I felt old, I wouldn't be flying this series 20 years later...  Be sure!

I remember playing IL-2 Forgotten Battles ever since I was 4 years old, and then Pacific Fighters within a year of its release. I still play them in the form of IL-2 1946 and it is still loads of fun even more than 15 years later.

One more here. I used to play a lot Il-2 1946 online. From 2007 (or maybe 2008, not sure) to 2011.

Is there anyone still playing it online?

Posted (edited)

Im playing 1946 again and more than BoX, because there are hundreds of handmade fantastic campaigns for BAT, from Africa to the Pacific.

And an AI that behaves reasonable in most cases.

Started flying IL2 in 2001, flew with 401Cdn, 361st VFG and at the end I was flying with AG-51 (VF-51 on the USS San Jacinto) with HSFX mod running and playing SEOW with other like minded groups in the Pacific.

I remember buying the original Il2 and the first time I fired up a training mission on my 15.1 inch LCD desktop monitor :)  - I was like WOW and the idea that we could fly in a different theater of war with planes we really never saw before and that in different ways were possible underdogs. Just remember thinking how cool and realistic that was!!!!

Oh yes Hyperlobby and Zeke vs Wildcats were golden days ? Wonder if my favourite opponent from back then is still flying high, KZ Sakai?

Hello Panp, ~S~

Sorry I did not see your post as I haven't checked the forums in a long time.  I owe you an apology, I'm truly sorry for swearing at you that one night!

Il2 was kinda like family for me, I spent almost 15 years flying online IL2 FB talking with people from around the world almost every night.  I hope to start making some new memories soon with GB.  Hopefully I'm not too late to the party!

Hi Maven ! My best online experience was SOV. I dont know if you remember me but I remember a Desert Map where SOB were High and I was the Bait and ye just Zoomed down and Killed anyone on my six. SOB were great shots.......MY Favorite Map was Flying the Seafire off the Carrier ! (Dont mention Spawning Problems !) .The FS team were very helpful to Newbies like me. ....My First Kill Online Ever was in a P40. A guy called "Pirate Smiles" (if I remember correctly) covered me and encouraged me when i had my first Combat. .....I remember Waiting and Waiting In HL to get a slot in SOV . Such great Flying . Great to see you SOB Maven.~S~

Sorry, I am very late reading your post Jaydee.  Yes I remember!

Yes the Seafire map was one of my favorites also.  I remember =AVG=Pirate's_Smile well.  I love watching old Youtube videos where the online chat was displayed at the top.  It's 'kinda like a time-machine into the past.  Brings back memories for sure.  My son was only 6 years old when he got his first online kill lol.  Now he's about to turn 21 so I'm feeling really old!

Here is a link to a vid that my old wingman made that has a lot of old names at the top of the recording!

Spit vs 109 and Zeke vs Wildcat were my two favorite servers. No icons, so as a bomber or attack plane pilot you could hide from the fighters a little easier. Also really enjoyed the Online Wars servers where they had the moving front lines and rescuing pilot feature.

I was maybe 20 years old when discovered IL2? My college Dell barely met the specs, and I picked up a used box version of IL2 Forgotten Battles with the Aces Expansion Pack included for $20 at an EB games in the Appleton mall. Good times. My life was forever changed, always wanting to know more about the less popular theaters of WW2 that they don't really go over in the US in school. Eastern Front, Italian Theater, Desert Theater, early Pacific Theater it was pretty cool to be playing the sim, then getting books from the library to read more in depth later that night. Ah to be young again with no kids or responsibilities.

Now I'm just lucky to get 20 minutes to myself and go to the basement and update the game to the latest version and read the forums before my kids get home and destroy the house :)

Warclouds was my go to dogfight server.

Around 10 - 11p.m. euro time player numbers would start to drop off and then they’d go up again as the east coast college guys would join.

There was a real feeling of passing the baton…

Spits and Zekes were the servers I liked best when not flying with the Pigs on one of our servers.

I spent some time there when coops were slow. Not my favorite but sometimes it was the best option. I’d fly the Dora, climb higher than everyone else and spend 45 min looking for/setting up the right Yak to pounce on.

If coops were slow I preferred Zeke vs Wildcat. Often as not I’d build a new coop to host while I waited for the guys (and Kelly/Billfish) to show up.

I preferred the western front server but yeah, the technique was climb high after takeoff and the transit to target and then ‘perch’.

I remember the first time I flew on the server being passed going the other way by four guys in Doras in an immaculate finger four formation that waggled their wings as they passed.

Impressed!

Occasionally you’d encounter a P47 at six thousand meters also transiting and a high altitude dogfight would ensue.

It was a great place to learn how to fight in the 190. You’d pick your target far below, dive down and then you had one or perhaps two pulls on the stick to line ‘em up and open fire.

If they jinked or you missed then it was a case of fire walling the throttle and up you go….

In the Dora, if you met a P51 up high the technique was quite simple; roll inverted and run for your life!!

Oh yes! I bought the original game back in 2001 in the big box. Such a classic! Those were the days you got a CD and a paper manual in the box (among other goodies). It was always a cool experience to open up that box and thumb through the manual, quick start guide, keyboard template, etc. I miss those days! I still have a copy of IL-2 1946 on my hard drive and play it on occasion. I believe I still have the Ostfront add-on as well although I only played it a few times. I also created a sound overhaul mod (Jiver's Total Sound Mod) for the game/sim that can be downloaded from the SAS 1946 site.

Started on-line in IL-2 around 2005 flying squadron dynamic campaign as well as Zekes v Wildcats mainly.

With the Old Breed

And before these there were strategic air combat games:

Eagle Day to Bombing the Reich by Avalon Hill, computer game Apple II circa 1984

Luftwaffe by Avalon Hill, board game 1971

I was there, I think using the handle Sakai07 or Stryker07. I did most of my online flying between 2008-2012, and I would run in whatever server had the population to make for good furballs. Did some co op with friends also, mainly flying 109s. I've been into flight sims since I learned what they are, MSFS5.1 was one of the first, and Falcon AT, but my first true love was Aces of the Pacific, then Red Baron, and Aces over Europe. What a wonderful trip down memory lane.

I am now virtually airborne. IL-2 1946 remains amazing. I was out of flight simming from 2017 to 2023, a dreadful period in all respects. Miss those who have passed over.

Hello Leit?

I can certainly say I had a tremendous amount of fun with Oleg's gem. Not being able to sim for a long time was like not being able to ambulate.

HALLO DD_Arthur! Were you using a different moniker back in the Alte Zeit?

Nah! I started flying IL-2 from the original version since 2001.
WWIIOnline took major flying time back in the days also.
