JG1 "Oesau"

is proud to present

tif3.thumb.jpg.6a87dcd20c2eb0ba018bd1b21018a64f.jpg

For those unfamiliar with JG1’s “in Flames” events, these homegrown online tournaments have a long history within the virtual combat sim community.  Flanders In Flames (FIF), our WW1 event, was started in October 1999 and is currently run in Rise of Flight and Flying Circus.

Tanks In Flames (TIF) is a combined arms tournament for the IL-2 Great Battles series.  At its core is the desire to create a realistic campaign experience.  Emphasis is placed on creating historically-inspired dogfights, tank battles, and matchups.  Coordination between players is vital, and the repercussions of attrition and lost resources heavily affect the outcome of campaigns.

TIF is a "dead-is-dead" style event for aircraft. This means that each player will only have one pilot life per night. If the player is killed, or captured, they are done as a pilot for that mission.  However, all participants will have unlimited lives as tail gunners and tankers.

Further, TIF does not make use any type of scripted missions.  As a result, tournament play can flow naturally between the two established teams – the Blue Team and the Red Team.  Note that neither the Blue Team or the Red Team represent an in-game side (Axis or Allied).  Side switching is built into the event!  Further, both teams have their own command, and it is these individuals who determine what the operation tasking orders will be for each side.

To win a campaign in TIF, a team will need to damage and destroy targets to allow friendly ground forces to capture territory.  Capturing territory gives a team points.

More information regarding the Tanks In Flames tournament specifics can be found here.  Additionally information will be posted over the coming weeks.

For now, please feel free to post, ask questions, and check out the sign-up thread (which will open Friday, 5 March 2021).

Really looking forward to this.  Tanks In Flames has taken years to develop, and we're so happy to share it with the greater IL-2 community.

If anyone has questions (regarding the rules, the upcoming campaign, what's involved, etc.), @JG1_Butzzell and I would be happy to answer.

Plane-sets, tank-sets and the map for the first campaign are in the works, and we'll be announced after registration has started.  But here is a link to the upcoming schedule: https://forum.jg1.org/topic/8644-tif-2021-spring-campaign-schedule/

All missions are run on Saturdays at 2PM EST / 7PM UTC.  Missions last for 3 hours.

We'll post a reminder when registration goes live.  Hope to see you all in the air with us!

Hi All,

Registration for TIF is now live!

TIF is an air war primarily, hence the dead-is-dead rules for pilots.  But, player controlled tanks are absolutely necessary to capture territory, hence the unlimited lives as tail gunners and tankers.

If any of you have any questions, just let us know: https://forum.jg1.org/topic/8729-tif-2021-spring-campaign-registration/

S! All

While the name "Tanks in Flames" implies a tank battle it is actually a combined arms battle with emphasis on the DiD air war. It was originally designed as an open server tank battle. By incorporating planes that affect the ground battle we came up with a DiD air war tournament. Not exactly the old IL2 "Ghost Skies" but close. This is a dynamic campaign with a moving front. Tanks and planes must work together to capture territory. This is a sign up, closed server event. It will be held on Saturdays at 2:00 pm Eastern North American time.

Both squadrons and individual pilots are welcome.

While The actual event will be held on Saturdays in April, it will be available for examination as an open server on Sunday March 7 and 21.

We will be using the Rhineland map today. Please remember the plane set is just temporary.

We want people to experience the map and features so no dead is dead today.

Also, the map for the TIF 2021 "Spring Campaign" has been posted:

https://forum.jg1.org/topic/8643-tif2021-spring-campaign-map/

The plane-set will be late 1944 / early 1945, and all tanks will be available in some form.

Once the teams have been finalized, the plane-set and the tank-set will be finished by participating squadrons.

Let me know if there are any questions.

Results for  7, March open session.

This was an interesting session. Below are starting and ending maps. The German team was able to capture the southern Allied base.

The Germans had many tankers but few planes.

The Allies had many planes but few tankers.

The Germans were able to control all flags but only able to destroy the southern allied HQ close to the end of session,

The Allies were able to destroy the Northern HQ but could not maintain control of the flags.

The map also shows that when a base is capture, the bases in the middle become active to extend game play.

Almost a stalemate.

Hi All,

Tanks In Flames is still actively registering participants as pilots, tank drivers or both!

https://forum.jg1.org/topic/8729-tif-2021-spring-campaign-registration/

Definitely sign up if you're interested in participating.  We'll be creating teams and finalizing the plane and tanks sets within the next week or so.

Also, to clarify, Tanks In Flames is not a perpetual server or a day long event.

TIF missions only go for 3 hours, once a week.  And no aircraft start at the front.  They must realistically fly forward.  So, as a result, teamwork between you and your wingman, you and your flight, and you and your team are vital.

But at the same time, while "dead-is-dead" for aircraft may seem a bit harsh, you can always "fly next time" with no penalties.  And, during the mission in question, you can always participate as a tailgunner or as a tank driver.  There is always plenty to do in TIF, regardless of your pilot's fate!

Dead-is-dead events were very common in Red Baron 3D, IL-2 1946, and even IL-2 Cliffs of Dover.  However, somewhere in the transition to IL-2 BoX, this style of play faded in popularity, with many being unaware of it's history within the greater community.  Flanders In Flames, a WW1 event run by our squadron since 1999,  was to my knowledge the only ongoing dead-is-dead event within IL-2 Great Battles / Rise of Flight.  It now has a sister in Tanks In Flames.

So, for those curious, definitely check out Tanks In Flames!  I don't think you'll be disappointed.

And if anyone wants to chat about the event, rules or how things work, please feel free to stop by our event Discord and message me.  I'm always happy to help!

There is now a Tanks in Flames area at JG1

Tournament info is very important. This is NOT FiF in WW II. Please look through the "Features" and "objectives" section.   This is a "Capture Territory" game. The tank battle locations move as territory is captured from session to session.  Tanks are dependent on planes to destroy enemy HQ and other targets. Planes depend on tanks to capture flags. Tanks and planes must work together to capture.

We wanted to recreate Ghost Skies. The 777 program is not the same as the original IL2 so we had to do something different.  With the addition of Tank Crew, we had a means for territory capture. Combining air targets into the ground war was easy. The conditions for the tank battle took some time. Fortunately the nice people at Simulated Combat Group have a lot of experience with tanks and helped us improve the ground war. We now have a fluid ground war with immediate dynamic effects from the air war and a moving front from session to session depending on the combined outcome of air and ground success..

Just to clarify... this is open to Blue Team as well... in fact, it's non password so all are welcome. JG1/Red Team will most likely be on the JG1 Teamspeak but we will also be monitoring the TIF Discord which would be a good place for Blue Team to go.

We added pictures of the aircraft spawn locations. This should help orient pilots to their location relative to the runway.

You always spawn at the end of the runway and perpendicular to the runway. You will need to pull forward some 50 m or so.

When you spawn in. look for the wind sock. When you pull onto the runway, turn towards the windsock. This should give you the maximum length of runway.

Pictures are here in the map section.

Hi All,

Tomorrow is our last dry-run prior to the start of the campaign.  If anyone is interested in joining us, registrations are still open:

https://forum.jg1.org/forum/169-tif-registration/

Currently, the two teams are pretty even - about 30 players per side.

The tournament kicks off on 10 April 2021.  Hope to see you there!

TIF is a "dead-is-dead" style event for aircraft. This means that each player will only have one life per night as a pilot. If a player's pilot is killed or captured, they are done as a pilot for the rest of the night.  However, all participants will have unlimited lives as tankers and tail gunners.

Looking forward to flying and tanking with you all!

Congratulations to both the Blue Team and the Red Team for their outstanding performances over the last 8 weeks!  Thank you so much for sharing the inaugural Tanks In Flames event with us!  Flying and tanking with you all was a tremendous amount of fun, and both @JG1_Butzzell and I hope that you enjoyed it as much as we did.

As mission designers and event administrators, we learned a lot of lessons in both Phase A and Phase B of the Spring Campaign.  We're hoping to use this new information to bring improvements to the whole TIF concept.  The goal is to not only give TIF more advanced gameplay but also to make the overall tournament more interesting to a wider audience.  Specifically, we're going to take a serious look at the air war and how we can better integrate it into the ground conflict.  As we start our Summer break, we hope to have more information for you soon. Keep checking back!

Now, onto the results:

With a stunning offensive in Phase B that I think General Patton would be proud of, the Blue Team has secured enough points to win the overall Spring Campaign.  You guys definitely brought your "A Game", both in the air and on the ground.  And I know that the Red Team can't wait to have the chance to meet you again on the virtual battlefield.

Thank you to every pilot and tanker!  Without your support, this tournament would not be able to function!
