Jonathan1321 Posted February 24, 2021 Posted February 24, 2021 (edited) Feel free to use this for Quest 2 discussion guys and to kick it off I will post my config set up. Nothing notable in terms of my performance usually running at 45PFS ASW but stretches to 90FPS on occasions. TheSNAFU Posted February 24, 2021 Posted February 24, 2021 (edited) Thanks for this. I too have the q2 and have the game running about the same as you described in terms of FPS. It runs smoothly most of the time. My settings are pretty close to yours. I am limited by my gtx 1080 while I wait to get a 30 series card if they ever become available at a fair price. I am curious about what resolution you have set in the oculus software. Edited February 24, 2021 by TheSNAFU
Jonathan1321 Posted February 24, 2021 Author Posted February 24, 2021 Super Sampling is at 1.3 (Via TT) so that sets the resolution does it not? (looking in the oculus software its set to 1.2 - Yourself?
TheSNAFU Posted February 24, 2021 Posted February 24, 2021 I have resolution in the oculus hone app at the lowest 1.0 setting with ss in the tray tool set to 1.4. This gives me decent visuals and performance. With the low resolution setting I’m using there is still way to much flickering and aliasing but any higher causes the game not to run smooth enough for me. I also recently switched to Opencomposite which allowed me to increase ss from 1.2 to 1.4. Definitely better performance vs SteamVR

Even with a little screen door effect, the Rift S looks sharper and less aliased to me...and seems to perform way better.
TheSNAFU Posted February 25, 2021 Posted February 25, 2021 I dont understand all else equal how the rift s has better visuals than what the q2 is capable of. I get there is the question of compression with link but the specs are significantly better on the q2. My hope is when I get a 3080 (if ever) and I can crank up the resolution and ss further the visuals will improve a lot on the q2. If that doesn’t do it I will sell it and move to the G2. One things for sure, I doubt I could ever fly without vr. I’m hooked!!

One things for sure, I doubt I could ever fly without vr. I’m hooked!! Again, I can only tell you my experience with both units. I keep trying the Quest 2 and want to love it, but it just isn't as good with my system in IL-2 (i7-9750h 6 core, rtx 2070 max q, 32 gb 2666mhz cl15 ram). The cockpit looks very good, but the terrain is always aliased and blurry. I have tried so many different setting and can never get it quite right. The rift s is just set and forget for me. The Quest 2 looks amazing for everything else, but not in IL-2 for me. The stuttering, blurring, and warping is also really bad--even when it holds a steady 72 FPS. I can't figure it out...have tried steam vr and open composite. Edited February 25, 2021 by =AW=drewm3i-VR
TheSNAFU Posted February 25, 2021 Posted February 25, 2021 (edited) Hmm maybe my hopes for much better with a new gpu are misguided. What you describe is pretty much spot on what I see. Great cockpits and planes around me look good close but further they are not sharp and the terrain has a lot of flickering aliasing the further away I look and there is warping or ghosting when aircraft pass by. i really haven’t used it much for other games but some of the standalone stuff I’ve tried looked great. I’m going to hold on to it till I get that dang 3080 and then decide it’s fate. Edited February 25, 2021 by TheSNAFU

I’m going to hold on to it till I get that dang 3080 and then decide it’s fate. Wise decision. I'm trying mine again tonight. With process lasso running I'm able to mostly eliminate time dilation in SP which is good by give me a few extra hundred mhz on active cpu threads. With asw disabled (ctrl+numpad 1) my framerate is around 45-50 in career combat on the rheinland map (scattered density) with some nodded textures, vrem, the vr cloud mod, and a few other mods. I am running 1.0x and 72 hz and it looks okay, just doesnt seem as crisp as the rift s which although mildly pixelated is fairly sharp and smooth if that makes sense? I have also tried up to 1.5 and it looks better but the asw (havent tried it without) blurs the image so the resolution gains do not help too much. I'm running a rtx 2070 max q laptop card which is slightly better than a gtx 1070 desktop card and I'm only seeing 60% average gpu usage, with spikes to around 80% and the odd 99% spike. CPU usage is also around 60-65% on active threads only. My tests are not really speaking well to the game engine optimization...if I was seeing high cpu/gpu usage taking the frames from 72 to 45ish, that would make sense but I actually typically see the usage DROP when performance declines.

I grabbed a Quest 2 and found it to be a visual downgrade due to video compression artifacts, blurring and ghosting of other aircraft or objects that got close. I ended up getting a G2 and it has blown both the Rift S and Quest 2 out of the water in terms of visual experience. The G2 worked very good at 50% render resolution with a 1080Ti and still looked absolutely amazing compared to the Rift S/Q2. I got a 3070 and was able to crank the resolution up higher and I'm blown away every time I put on the HMD now.
Giovanni_Giorgio Posted February 25, 2021 Posted February 25, 2021 Does anybody have mic working with the link?
Jonathan1321 Posted February 25, 2021 Author Posted February 25, 2021 Ive noticed the Microphone isn't working on mine either, not that I use it...
76SQN-FatherTed Posted February 25, 2021 Posted February 25, 2021 Well this is a depressing thread. I was bought a Quest 2 for Xmas and haven't yet managed to get it performing to where I prefer it over flat screen with TIR for IL2. My PC specs are on the low side (i7-3770 @3.5GHz, RTX 2070, 24GB DDR3), I admit. As part of the present I upgraded the GPU from a 1060, but couldn't really justify the ridiculous price of a 3070. So I don't know where to go from here. I mean the experience of VR is tremendous in FC, but it just makes me sad that I can't enjoy the glorious graphics of the game in VR. Obviously I'll keep tinkering with the settings (and threads like this are very useful) and I think Oculus are pushing development quite hard, but if only the answer is to throw silly money (for me) at it, then the headset will be gathering dust.
MoleUK Posted February 25, 2021 Posted February 25, 2021 Recently been getting into warthunder sim VR with my Q2, only launched IL-2 a few times to see how it ran. Will try tinkering with opencomposite in a few days to see how good I can get it looking and report back. Running with an r5 3600 and a 3070. Might be worth trying virtual desktop instead of link, as link has had a few issues of late.

On your rig getting good performance through Oculus Link would be difficult. If you had a CPU running closer to 5 GHz you would be a little better off.

Your gpu is just fine, but you need a new cpu with fast low latency ram for a good vr experience. Either intel or amd ruzen 5000 would work fine. You need something with good single core performance and for that an intel 9th or 10th gen i7 would fit the bill. For amd, a ryzen 5600x would be great. You'll want 3600 mhz ram at least with the tightest timings available. Guys on here recommend samsung b-die for amd.
76SQN-FatherTed Posted February 25, 2021 Posted February 25, 2021 Appreciate the input guys - am saving up for a MoBo/CPU/RAM combo. 1
whitav8 Posted February 26, 2021 Posted February 26, 2021 @=AW=drewm3i-VR, I have a 9700K@5Ghz. Could you please provide an example link to the kind of memory with tight timings that you are referring to (2x16gbgb) Thanks much Dave W.

You should ask on the desktop forum as I'm running a laptop amd dont keep up with desktops really, but I think you could find cl 18 ram for that speed. I'm using Kingston HyperX Fury as it had the tightest timings (cl15) for my system that only supports 2666 mhz ram.

Don't cheap out on it either, get good quality. You can usually tell by price. Edited February 26, 2021 by dburne
