FurphyForum Posted November 5, 2021 Posted November 5, 2021 Does anyone know from what FS,FG, "Honey Bunny" came from?

Magnificent pic of the Allied Fighter’ P-38L “Honey Bunny”. This Lightning (44-26981) was delivered to the USAAF as photo-reconnaissance F-5G. It was later, in civilian hands, converted to its nowadays fighter configuration. This interesting photo enphatizes dramatically the P-38’s characteristic cockpit nacelle layout with its superb all-around canopy. At the foreground we can see one of its peculiar elevator external mass balances. This features was added early on (first with the YP-38s) in order to cure tail buffeting -even if the P-38 already had internal mass balances. This buffeting was due, in reality, to poor airflow over the wing centre section/fuselage area, the Army test pilots erroneusly called it “elevator flutter”. Lockheed proved them wrong and the tail buffet was only solved when wing/fuselage fillets were added later. Notwithstanding that, General Wolfe made mandatory those external mass weights on each one of the Lightnings built starting with the YP-38’s. This was all I could find in a quick search. Hope it helps.
