Shouldn't "Show active..." be clickable? I can see that the API layer is activated in OpenXR Tools and XRNeckSafer works just fine, but the "Show active..." is always grayed out.

I deactivated it because it's not working for everyone and it doesn't give more info than the OpenXR tools...

This may be of passing interest to others setting up the latest version of Neck saver:

I've found that these settings work well with my ReverbG2 headset esp playing Flying Circus:

It should work in beta2b. If it is messed up try to reset HOME and ENVIRONMENT in Mixed Reality Portal.

hi NobiWan,

Can't thank you enough for your great work! Just wondering if you've got an idea when do you think you'll be able to do a  "fix for translational movement when rotated"? It's the most annoying and frustrating thing for me, especially after getting used to the old NeckSafer behaviour.

Both me and a friend are having trouble getting VRNS to work.  We both have Reverb G2s.

We found that if we run VRNS after starting SteamVR, then it reads the HMD position and the offset is shown as applied in VRNS, but there is no visual effect besides the occasional flicker when pressing the manual rotation bindings or when passing an autorotation trigger point.

If we run VRNS first then it seems to work fine but quickly results in Steam and SteamVR crashing.

Odd because it used to work perfectly for me a couple of months ago.  I'm not using any other mods.

Hi all!

Many thanks again to NobiWan for this - I'm wondering if anyone can point me to a guide for running IL-2 in OpenXR?

Normally I run in SteamVR with whatever the default settings are (OpenVR I assume), but I recently started using a Varjo Aero, and VRNeckSafer no longer works, but XRNeckSafer should work, so I was going to give OpenXR a try.

I see threads with detailed setup guides for OpenXR for DCS... is it the same steps for IL-2?

Thanks in advance!

Yep pretty much. I gave it a try and for me I went back to Steam VR for both, but that was just personal preference.

@J2_NobiWan you probably are already aware of this issue, but VRNS 2.06 does a better job than XRNS beta2b does for looking back over each shoulder. This is perhaps most easily experienced and replicated when trying to look over either shoulder in a P-51.

Using VRNS 2.06 I can easily look back and also shift/lean my body to see around the P-51’s pilot headrest. Using XRNS beta 2b I can rotate my view the same, but shifting/leaning my body to also see around that headrest is more difficult or impossible.

I use the same settings (manual rotation 45° accumulative, autorotation off) in both VRNS and XRNS, but VRNS works better as described above. Fantastic software, nonetheless!

Yes, I am aware of it and it is annoying me too (see comments above). It's a complex thing and will probably take some time to get fixed.

Maybe something similar to this?:  https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/67985-simple-tool-to-check-your-six/?do=findComment&comment=1163012

It is worth playing around with the app mode options if there are problems with crashing.

Can confirm using v208 resolved the issue where vrns wouldn't work when launched in background mode

Out of curiosity. Does it also works in the vertical? (Let say I want to watch a plane right above me) Or only horizontal?

Posted (edited)

Just noticed that V2.09 works perfectly with the Aero HMD, but on the monitor.  When the HMD is on there's that 1-2 second hang while the switched image is turned upside right from first being displayed upside down, however with the Aero HMD off and watching the view changing on the monitor it works without any hitches and is instant as it should be, so the problem is within the Aero software and how it handles and updates the image change within the HMD only.

@Drum - Why not use XRNeckSafer, I heard it works well with the Aero?

No, but I believe it is on @J2_NobiWaN's list to implement..

My only experience with the Aero is in IL-2 and I find SteamVR works better.  I get a steady studder with OpenXR so can't use it.  If I take my HMD off my head and look at VRNS within the game on the monitor the VRNS works perfectly, but for some reason the image is displayed upside down inside the Aero HMD which pauses the view for a second or two until the image is turned right side up again.  So it's working, but just needs to first flip the image so the HMD works fine and the monitor has the pause.  ?

Understood. I think I would pursue finding out what is going wrong in OpenComposite\OpenXR rather than hoping for a fix from Varjo.  I see you are on the XRNS Discord, no help there? In my HP G2 v2 I don't see any studder in OpenXR, but thats apples and oranges.

It's strange why it's stuttering and you're right, I need to figure that one out for sure because I don't believe that's the case with other Aero users.  The stutters happens when I maneuver the plane or move my head forward, back or sideways.  Even without XRNS active, so it's something to do with my CPU setup but I'm fairly clueless when it comes to understanding what makes this CPU do what it does, so more reading I guess.  <g>

I'm coming from the WMR realm so can't be much help, but I would do the "OpenXR Installation Dance" from square 1 to see if the problem persists... and be sure SteamVR is disabled\uninstalled.. another place to look is the OpenXR Toolkit \ OpenComposite Discord here - https://discord.gg/Nw9CBkFx

SteamVR timed out!
 try to restart SteamVR/Oculus/WMR

^^^ this is the message I get now when running the app. It worked for a minute when I first installed it, now it's broken.

edit: now it's working again.. I've been at this for like 3 hours, and to be honest, I have no idea how I fixed it

Hello Drum, did you fix your issue?

It seems that I have a similar problem as yours. For me i get a stuttery image when ever i turn my head from center position left or right or when ever i make a quick roll of my plane.

@Drum  - check the XRNS Discord, seems like there is a workaround until Beta 3 drops..

From 453 Juihad Daddy - "I also stumbled upon a bizarre fix [to stuttering and FPS loss in IL-2]. I close (not just minimize) XRNS and back to a smooth experience at 70fps. Here’s the kicker: XRNS continues to function!"

@Drum have you tried actually shutting down XRNS once you are in the plane as 453 Juihad Daddy suggests?

This is a game changer for me. I was in a helicopter crash in the army 25 years ago and the dead zones on my neck and back axis is down to about 30 percent. I finally got to make the switch from being shot down by bombers in front of me to being shot down by fighters behind me. Thank you, NobiWan, it works brilliantly. One small thing that would be nice to have, if possible, is the ability to map the "Set Reset Button" to a keyboard key. I use Voice Attack to map the center VR key in game to "\", so that I don't have to waste a precious joystick button that will be used once per flight, or even once per game. It's entirely plausible that I'm just too stupid to map it to my keyboard as the app exists now, so apologies if that's the case. Help me NobiWan Kenobi. You're my only hope.

Have not tried this yet, moved back to SteamVR but I'll try it later today and see if that works, although I doubt it as it did the same even without XRNS activated.

Great to hear that VRNS is helping you with your neck problems. Comments like this make it all worthwhile for me, thanks! :)

There is a Voiceattack plugin that enables it to generate (virtual) joystick button clicks. This should work fine with VRNS.

Native keyboard support is not planned for VRNS because I believe it will open a complete new can of worms.

But with the plugin you should be able to do what you want.

Cheers,

 NobiWan

You're right, I remember reading and disregarding something about that when I set up voice attack. I'll look into it. Upon further review, I realized that I have plenty of joystick buttons. I recently (this week) upgraded from a Microsoft Sidewinder FFB2. I bought it the year that they switched from serial or PS/2 plug to the hot new USB technology that was emerging. I think I bought it before my daughter was born, and now I have two grandkids. It has like 7 buttons and each one is precious. The new one has like 90, plus, I guess, 2 shift modifiers. So I can spare the button, I'm just still thinking like the stone age. Thanks again for your hard work on this. I spent thousands on upgrading my computer and VR headsets and Hotas and pedals only to realize that I could barely turn enough to see my wingtip. I was considering going back to flat screen.?  Thank you for saving me from that.
