Tempest MkV Skins - 4k

First attempt mimicking historical (sort of), and a question too. Starter was the 4k template from Il2, and thanks Raptorattacker i now finally got that alpha thing working.

Q: The side letter and number codes are usually like WX-roundel-F. To change that ordering to F-roundel-WX is probably not correct,

but i found uploaded skins for IL2 files where they did that. Both sides different thus.

Alas the spacing regarding the five letter (pictured here EJ703) and the Roundel are not enough for 2 letters (top picture).

Size seems (the W) a historic fact. BTW what is a correct font? There seemed to be many used in '44- '45. Roundels are usually at the same spot looking at photos from WW2.

Codes varied - some spits for instance would read  AB o C on either side whereas others ABoC and CoAB.  I've seen the former more on RCAF aircraft but that's not to say it was an RCAF thing.

I think your code font is a little too big. Not by much though. If you imagine a C it should be able to fit around the white of the roundel with a sliver of blue showing.  Your "W" is also too wide. The verticals need to be straighter. There are lots of fonts purporting to be RAF this and that. Most do a good job 80% of the time but you are much better looking for references in contemporary photos (not artist colour plates) as there was a lot of variation. From there create your own letters either from scratch or by chopping up the ones you have.

@jollyjack As far as lettering goes, try contacting VA_SOLIDKREATE. He makes lots of letters for use and could also give you some tips on your question (I would imagine).

Cheers

And now one using the 'proper' font From VA_SOLIDKREATE ?? Party-time, with an added lady, I'll rework the others and repost downloads later ....

PS just came across Megalax's tempest squadron skinpacks. Nice and what a job that must have been.

It seems every one uses the green camouflage layer from the default template; gets a little boring LoL.

I'll try to post some camouflage variations later, as done in this skin ... more work to do for the next one.

There was only one pattern historically. The roundels varied but not the pattern.

Well, i changed the 'dark green' pattern layer from the template for this tester, and used Solidkreates Luftscript font because of the W:

i will post download links later, saw some minor fixes to do, and a change to experiment with ...and yes, they ar non-historical.

The font also looks better on an other skin ...

Actually, if you take the time to look at photos of different Tempests you'll notice quite a bit of variation. They used rubber masks on the aircraft to paint them but they weren't always put on the same spot on every aircraft. The shapes are largely the same, however their placement does vary from airframe to airframe.

sorry - by pattern I meant the shape. I took jolly jack to mean widely differing patterns

yep, i did. never knew they used rubber masks for the paint schemes. last time i (hand) painted a car was with a brush (in my poor student days, an old band-van).
