Popular Post JMan1512 Posted October 31, 2020 Popular Post Posted October 31, 2020 (edited) I got this magnificent game just recently after stumbling upon it randomly on steam, never tried a flight sim before and this was on sale and looked good especially in VR so decided to give it a bash, i then promptly bought some of the DLC, after trying it using a mouse which was less than ideal i bought a cheap joystick (logitech extreme 3d) which works brilliantly with it, using JoyToKey i gave buttons on the stick a secondary function, was a pain setting that up but i've got it set pretty good for myself now. After flipping my plane upside down every time i tried to land i managed for the first time last night to actually land and keep it right side up, who cares about winning the war, that right there is victory enough for me Anyway, just wanted to write this post to say what an amazing game this is, hell it's more than that, it's more of an experience than a game, and thanks to the devs for adding such great difficulty options for us noobs, i can see myself putting many many hours into this and one day i may even be able to up the difficulty from oh my god what did i just do to come get some Cheers. Decided to make a little compilation of some of the gameplay i have experienced in the short time i have had playing this game, what an absolute blast it has been and my god this game is beautiful, love it - https://www.bitchute.com/video/FyG8bEguJ0BJ/ or here https://odysee.com/@tcttgames:8/Il2GameplayVR:d (sometimes takes a while to load) Edited March 28, 2021 by JMan1512 Added video link 43 1 14
AndyJWest Posted October 31, 2020 Posted October 31, 2020 Welcome to IL-2 GB, jamboman1512. Seems you are on the right track already. I suspect most of the old hands here (some of us are positively ancient ?) will have forgotten just how much fun there was in even being able to take off and land, never mind hit anything with the guns. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you get stuck. And, when you feel confident about learning a bit more, check out Requiem's excellent video tutorials. He has lots of stuff on IL-2 GB, starting with some good advice on basic principles of flying here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLnyigzFtHeNqmQMVhq1Shl972CPX4O-0B 3 4
mattebubben Posted October 31, 2020 Posted October 31, 2020 (edited) I’ll just repeat what Andy said. Welcome to the community. And don't be afraid to ask for help or advice about the game etc. Edited October 31, 2020 by mattebubben 1
SCG_ErwinP Posted November 1, 2020 Posted November 1, 2020 Welcome to the IL2 world! You also can build a cheaper Head Tracking using a Playstation 3 camera (PS Eye) and some Infrared LEDs. That's will take you to another level in this game! I recommendo read this guide from BlackHellHound1 about HeadTracking, he did a excellent work. I can help you too if needed. 1
ShamrockOneFive Posted November 1, 2020 Posted November 1, 2020 (edited) Welcome to the community! Flight simming can be an incredibly enjoyable hobby. As the others have said, feel free to ask questions when you run into something that you need help with. There's tons of community knowledge and resources out there that will help you as you grow your skills. Highly recommend Requiem's Air Combat Tutorial Library as a great resource for all things about flying aircraft, particularly in IL-2: https://www.youtube.com/user/RequiemBoS Edited November 1, 2020 by ShamrockOneFive 2 2

Jaws2002 Posted November 1, 2020 Posted November 1, 2020 (edited) Welcome jamboman. Nice feeling landing for the first time. I still remember my first take off and first successful landing, in that good old Il-2 demo, back in 2001. I knew I was hook, the moment I flipped and crashed the P-39, in my first takeoff attempt, in that intercept mission that came with the demo. Welcome and have fun. dburne Posted November 1, 2020 Posted November 1, 2020 Yep welcome aboard OP!! This is a fantastic game especially in VR!. Be aware though IL-2 in VR can end up being quite the money pit... at least it has for me. But wow, what a ride! 1
BornToBattle Posted November 1, 2020 Posted November 1, 2020 ^^^ ditto what dburne has said regarding VR. Once you start you’ll always be opening your wallet for the next leap in technology. Now that Facebook axed the more what I consider serious Rift line, I’ve abandoned it and am awaiting the new G2, which will be mind blowing (I hope) in regards to IL-2 and VR. DCS I’ve flown in VR as well but for whatever reason I just don’t get the “wow” factor like I do in IL-2. The optimization for IL-2 and VR has been really well done and they just don’t stop on trying to tweak and make things even better as time goes on either. Great dev team. Now just get a set of rudder pedals and a throttle quadrant and you’ll be in it big time! For an authentic “feel” I’ve got both yoke and stick available to use. With the P-38 it feels weird using the yoke, but that’s the way it is! Probably my favorite to use the yoke with is the A-20B. I find her very nice to fly and very well behaves as well. Practically flies herself. Very tame. Playing in VR makes you remember key commands and location is done by feel so a quadrant can really help in that respect too as the one I use (CH Products) also has simple toggle switches below as well that can be assigned all sorts of inputs and performs as I expect it to without having to take out a second mortgage to pay for it. I also LOVE flying in those WWI birds as well. In VR I particularly, you REALLY get a feel as to the size difference between the machines of that time period and WW2. Plus, if you don’t mind really working to get a kill as you progress in your skill sets this will definitely fill that bill. Talk about a furball. They've got a nice Halloween sale going on now too...hint, hint...nudge, nudge... Sorry this was a bit long winded. Oh, and welcome aboard! 1
Rjel Posted November 1, 2020 Posted November 1, 2020 Welcome aboard. You’re in for some good times. Both the sim and on the board. This sim is the best cost to enjoyment ratio for an entertainment product I’ve ever spent money on. Worth every last cent. 2 2
Guest deleted@134347 Posted November 2, 2020 Posted November 2, 2020 (edited) I'm actually envious of your IL-2 discovery. I want to re-live it again! ? I was giggling like a 5 year old boy when I took the first flight in VR in IL2. every time I fly Il2 i discover something new. Yesterday I discovered that Mig3's flap extension indicator is on the floor. And that was after flying/playing this game for ~1,500 hours or so. ? Welcome to the club! You won't be disappointed! blitze Posted November 3, 2020 Posted November 3, 2020 It is a magnificent game and more. Welcome. Even being experienced with prior WW2 flight sims - it took me a bit to get the feel for basics in Il2 BoX Birds. Admittedly - the physics have gone through a lot of changes since then but so has my approach especially on the controls - easy does it, even in combat as your breathing and vision will tell you. Have a look at the WW1 birds as well, boring to get anywhere in them but a blast when you end up in dogfights. Some great reference material for learning and a great community. 1
KG_S_Kalle_Kalutz82 Posted November 3, 2020 Posted November 3, 2020 Welcome dude Some of us here are salty per default, but as a german old phrase goes: barking dogs dont bite... Well, some of us do, but mainly you will get here helpful and patient pilots, willing to show you the first steps. Hope you enjoy your experience here in this our all game ! 1
SAG Posted November 7, 2020 Posted November 7, 2020 (edited) I second the comment that says that you reaaally should consider getting head tracking (or VR is amazing!) as it takes the game to another level, don't bother with expensive TrackIR as the free alternatives are just as good if set up correctly EDIT: I should've guessed fro your OP that you already have VR. My bad. Anyway, Welcome and hope you enjoy the literally thousands of hours you'll be able to get from this sim. Edited November 7, 2020 by SAG 1
EAF19_Marsh Posted November 10, 2020 Posted November 10, 2020 Welcome onboard! This is a work of art and we are all so happy to see new people enjoying it. Spread the news! 1
GregP Posted November 10, 2020 Posted November 10, 2020 Yes, welcome to the game and to the community! Your experience provides a welcome reminder for us long-time simmers that this is supposed to be fun. Sometimes in our passion for the details, we tend to get lost in negativity and it ends up sucking the fun out it, which obviously defeats the whole purpose of playing in the first place. So thank you again for the reminder to not lose sight of the forest for the trees! 1
J37_Spyboy Posted November 11, 2020 Posted November 11, 2020 Welcome to the game and this helpful community. 1
kestrel79 Posted December 1, 2020 Posted December 1, 2020 Finally got some time to fly some IL-2 during the long weekend. I got through all the WW2 Allied planes in hopping into the cockpit in VR, having my jaw hit the floor, then making sure all the controls are mapped for each specific plane to all my buttons and HOTAS and then doing a few quick mission dogfight and ground attack missions and landing back at base. This was my first time flying a bomber in VR and hopping to the different gunner positions such a cool feeling! Hoping to start the Axis side later this week. Exploring each new cockpit in VR is very amazing and exciting. Anyone else just marvel and moving all the levers, dials, and switches on the ground before takeoff? I know I'm a total nerd but I love the sensation of being there in the cockpit. 1 2

Run through the Me-262 engine start process in full manual mode....I don't know why, but doing that in VR was so gratifying to me. 1 1
Bf109Ace Posted December 2, 2020 Posted December 2, 2020 Hi Guys, Thanks for a magnificent flight sim!! The best!! I have been flying IL-2 1946 and all the previous versions, for years! I finally upgraded to CloD Blitz last year and then to Tobruk. Great stuff but sadly not as bug free as IL-2 1946. My next step was to BoS. My question is.... Is there no open view in BoS or do we have to fly with the cockpit permanently on??? I am a SP player and although I appreciate the reality component of the game, it still remains a game!! Please tell me I have the option ( somewhere ) to turn the cockpit view off.

Which is one factor that makes this a Simulator rather than a game. 1
Bf109Ace Posted December 2, 2020 Posted December 2, 2020 Thanks Elem, appreciate the quick response. Not the answer I was hoping for. Looks like I am stuck with Clod & Tobruk Cheers

There are no key maps available to leave you freely flying around in space.

Reason we don’t have it I suspect , it might be another opening for cheats online. I can understand wanting to have it some times. But a dealbraker? That is a first. Why not use aim assist instead?
DragonDaddy Posted December 2, 2020 Posted December 2, 2020 F2, F3, F4, F5 give you various external views

Jason That view works well... add in a bit of vibration and a black and white filter... and one has a gun camera. That said (and this isn't another request, just a musing)... I always kindof wanted a track system that'd only take pictures from that view, and only take pictures when I was firing - right now, if I want the gun camera experience to review my shots - I'd have to copy out all the footage and then edit it together
