Seeking feedback on DWT SP missions and campaigns

Played through a lot of "Rats over Tobruk" and a bit of "Desert Hawks"

Having a lot of fun so far! kudos to the creators

Did someone say there was a Beaufighter campaign? or did I misread that somewhere?

A quick bug note on Rats over Tobruk. After mission 3 you are stuck with bombs for the rest of the missions with no option to change loadouts on campaign anymore.

Cheers

Thanks for the feedback Jim.

re the Rats of Tobruk issue - we are aware of the issue and i'll try and do an update soon to rectify.  There were some changes made to the way the game handles default load outs hence the bombs being on aircraft.  In the interim a workaround is to jettison them after take off.

re beaufighter - i havent seen any mention of one but your interest is noted.

Hi Avimimus,

Thanks for the ideas and this is exactly what we are after in terms of developing new quick mission content - thanks.

I've added them to the list and the mission builders will take a look and see what they can do.  I built a Bloody Biscay campaign over at Mission4Today (based on Chris Goss' great book) many years ago so might even dust off the old mission designs from that campaign (or re-read Chris' book) and build the Ju-88C v Beaufighter one myself.  Lots of fun to be had doing heavy fighter combat!

Thanks

Ezzie

Glad I shared then!

I agree that it is fun to make some of these scenarios ourselves - although including them as official scenarios is good too!

Note: For the QMB it would be good to increase the diversity of default saved weapon loads (some aircraft are missing them). If there is a way to set appropriate fuses it mgiht also be useful (e.g. the Ju-88C is probably best flown with time-delayed/low-altitude fuses as the default).

A few more ideas for quick missions:

- Countering a torpedo boat attack on a convoy (or a submarine attack).

- A smaller intercept mission attacking bombers or transport aircraft (currently the missions are fighter vs. fighter, or relatively complex attacks by multiple groups of aircraft - which are harder for the user to quickly customise for practice purposes).

- A scramble mission because your airfield is under attack by machine-gun equipped trucks/armoured cars/the Long Range Desert Group.

- A wind/inclement weather liaison flight (possibly once the new weather engine is in).

Operation Torch, 8 November 1942 - First Cut

I used Derna as the closest I could get on the Tobruk map to Rabat, and Derna West is Rabat-Sale airfield.  The terrain is fairly close.  Nowhere near ready for anyone else yet - it really needs Vichy bomber and transport types we haven't got, plus a whole lot of Naval action.  Still, I got some combat.  Pity my Wildcat isn't RN, but never mind.

Second cut.  Now using Oran as my venue (still Derna on the Tobruk map) because I can get closer to the air side of Torch.  I'm very happy with the RN skins for Martlet and Spitfire:  one for the Hurricane would be nice, if it ever reaches the top of your very large heap of suggestions.  And maybe a USN skin for the Martlet.  I'd try it myself, but I haven't a clue on this topic.  One oddity is that, even with 'Show Markings' off, one of the aircraft always shows markings over its skin.  Often the leader, whether or not I'm flying it.

It would be nice if we could use French markings more widely.  At the moment I'm using Blenheim 1's as surrogate French bomber and transport aircraft, but of course can't put Vichy markings on them.  Once again, I can't do this myself.  If there's a reference somewhere that's not too hard I'll give it a try, and make it available if it works.

Here's a couple of images.  You know that advice about getting so close you're about to hit your target before you shoot, and then getting in closer?  Not always helpful.

Operational Research

As part of my research into Operation Torch I've just downloaded (free) the file series AIR 27/2387, covering the Fleet Air Arm.  It is totally fascinating, but the relevant part is that there is quite a lot of coverage of missions in the desert, at and near Tobruk.  I will be pulling more RAF Operations Record Books and so on out of Kew.  At the moment, due I think to Covid, downloading is free for those who register so I thought I'd mention it to members working on missions.  As a taste, here's a few excerpts:

I've sampled several campaigns and don't know if my experience is similar to others, but I've found I'm being sent out on missions with only a few squadron mates to look for just a few enemy aircraft or a single Ju-88 turning for home and hard to chase down in my Hurricane..., not nearly the numbers found in CloD.Also the enemy planes occasionally show up after our turn for home ( I've noticed this several times in "Desert Hawks" campaign.I spot them on the map function & turn to meet the Macchi's but my flight mates are on their way home & don't turn back no matter how much I try calling them for help on the (usless)RT. That leaves me in a real pickle ( this happened in CloD as well from time to time. Also in Eagles over Tobruk if I put my 109 in automatic pilot for the longish flights to Tobuk, my plane immediately turns around to land ( this too happened at timesin CloD as well,so...)I don't know if these are simply built into the campaigns.

Finally: Stuka attacks on shipping in Tobruk Harbor are suicide!

Having a lot of fun flying (and getting my tail handed to me) the Battle of France campaign, but I've noticed there's no ability to adjust the plane loadouts. Not sure if that's historically accurate or not, but I'm trying to figure out what the convergence on my plane is set at. Further, I'm not sure how the campaign is tracking kills, but it doesn't seem to be counting all the enemy plane kills at the end of missions (based on results screen vs. status window during a mission).

Regardless, thank you for the great content! I'm looking forward to trying out other campaigns as I hopefully get better at this.

Well, historically pilots don't decide what loadout they will use, but their commanders. Few fighter aces may have some privileges.

Ace or not you have this "privilege". 😁

Start the game, click in Options > Plane > Loadout > Guns and set your preferred convergence, Horizontal and Vertical, you need do this for each gun.

Hit APPLY , start a QM or Single mission and test.

Other than this you have, the privilege of decide the paint of your plane, and even their serial number.

Some people will swear that you can adjust ammo belts in Options > Plane > Loadout > Gns, but in my "waste(d)" CloD experience, I conclude that this is just "Internet legend", you can adjust and save with custom name, but after don't have way to use. 😜

You can, it's just there's one more step. You first have to set the gun loadout (bullets, convergence, etc) and save that.

THEN you have to go back to the screen with the fuel % and the bomb racks, etc, and save THAT preset. This then shows up in the Quick Mission menu where you can select Default [stock] etc.

Evaluation report - Bf109E vs D520.

Still digging.  I imagine that expert builders already have this comparison report, carried out by the Armee de l'Air, but it's well worth reading. Here

Or Here in English.  By and large the conclusions align with the performance I've seen in Blitz Campaign missions, with the 520 being outfought by the 109, except maybe in turning.  You pretty much have to wait for someone to dive on you, avoid his fire (!) and hope for a shot as he departs.  The French report is perhaps a little kind to the 520, but that appears in all wartime evaluations.  It gloats over the fact that the 520 has an appallingly rough stall and flicks inverted from steep turns, and that a following 109 can be caught unawares when it overshoots ....  Hopeful.  The report does comment on the very light controls of the 520, which are similar in Blitz.  Anyway, the information may help some mission builders.

Ah, so that's what I'm doing wrong! I have to say, after your assessment I'm feel a little bit less bad about how much I'm getting kicked around.

Very interesting report, thank you! Time to dust off my French and dive into it myself.

Opponents in Desert Hawks Campaign

Macchi 202's seem much harder to get in your sights than 109's.  They also support their comrades a lot better- usually if you're fixed on a 109 you are pretty safe maneuvering for a shot, but if the opposition is Macchis you really have to keep checking the mirror and the rear views. Maybe they are just set with a higher skill level, but I've found this pretty consistent.

I'm wondering if the Stukas really had their 'Jericho Trumpets' howling all the time when flying back to their homebase.  Happened with the Ju-87s I had to escort in the 'Hawks over Tobruk' campaign in both missions.

When flying the Stuks myself in an attack on ships in Tobruk ('Gravity is your Friend') I've learnt I have to retract the dive brake completely (neutral position wasn't enough) to stop the siren.

I'm playing both campaigns I mentioned above at the moment and I like them a lot. In general the AI fighters seems to fly not so 'acrobatic' anymore.

The Tomahawks are too much for me though, they shoot me down 3 times before I could escape and have an emergency landing safely somewhere in the German occupied desert.

But that's not the fault of the game, of course.

This combat reports looks like write by CloD AI pilots, "no attack" (on enemy planes),  "expend my ammunition", "...I evade and made back to base"😜
