I guess dumb question but I gotta ask as I have no clue.

Currently in process of learning the P-47 and in beginning stages of a PWCG Campaign.

What is the selectable MN 28 option in PWCG for this aircraft? I had a look through the 1CGS tech notes on the P 47, and did not catch a reference to it.

MN-28 is a Bendix Compass (points towards radio beacons) if I remember correctly

How is this going for you?  I keep picturing you at the auto dealership trading in your British MG Roadster for an F-150 pickup!

Lol could be better. I feel like I am driving a big square bus out in the skies.

Not having quite the success in it I was getting with my beloved Spit Mk IX or even the P-51, but am still plugging away and see how it does.

I just transitioned form a 109 to a 190. I feel your pain. I have always loved the 190 from long before the first flight sim ever existed, but flying them is more than a little different than the 109.

The 190 is so far at least, the only one I have been successful at shooting down in the P-47.

Only been able to get like three so far in 10 missions so don't think too bad of me lol.

Thing with the P-47 is that it is faster the higher you are. To properly use the Jug as a fighter you need to be at least 6000m high. Down low everything is capable of outrunning/outmanoeuvering you. My tactic when fighting against Jugs is to drop low and use my superior manoeuvering to outturn them.

Unless you're flying the Dora, then you're just playing the game in easy mode.

For me, I view it the other way - the P-47 itself is "hard mode," since most of my fights eventually work their way down to the deck.

I was interested to hear what @dburne thought as he started flying it in PWCG especially moving from the Spit and P-51, because I have a real "love/hate" relationship with the P-47 (and P-40 for that matter).  I love the look/history of the P-47 and oddly enjoy trying to get all the engine management items arranged properly - but actually getting kills with it is another story.  But then again, it is so satisfying when you get the deflection and convergence right and those 8 .50s come together on a target.

My PWCG compromise was that I won't transition to the P-51 until one of my SP pilots finally makes ace in the P-47.  I am a believer in @PatrickAWlson's " a/c improvement" progression play style that was so much fun in RoF.  (I was mentally thanking Pat a couple of weeks ago for including the Ju-52 in his BoBp campaign when 3 of them showed up as targets to help my P-47 guy along the way to a P-51 squadron).

One other reason I have enjoyed the P-47 lately, is that I just finished "Race of Aces."  The author, John Bruning, did a nice job discussing the P-47 and the P-38 pilots' impressions as it arrived in the New Guinea campaign.  They were definitely not fans, but Col Neel Kearby (who I knew nothing about until reading the book) knew the P-47 and taught his pilots to use its strengths.  Unfortunately, while looking to challenge Bong's score, he eventually made the fatal mistake he had so diligently taught his pilots to avoid when he turned low and slow.

Although I look forward to some of the P-47 FM tweaks that are on the way with 4.08, Bruning's description of the combat style used by the P-47 for low level combat in that campaign (they were mostly fighting a lower altitude battle with the Japanese), feels very familiar in BoBp if you want to survive for another mission.  So, as much as I wish I was Johnson or Gabreski - the P-47 seems correct based on Bruning's New Guinea accounts and it will get your pilot killed if you treat it like other fighters.  This = "Hard Mode" for me.
