Guys,

If any Radeon users so have everything working OK we need to know that as well, so please post in the special thread. It could be related to a specific card series etc. We need to narrow it down as much as possible.

The 37mm's performance certainly lends credence to the idea that gun damage isn't quite calculated properly in Multiplayer. All the planes in this clip returned home:

It's not about calculation, it's about packets of info and lag.

Great update - love the new rendering.

One small gripe is the new "stop pulling on the stick too much!"  techno chat message.  If you are riding a stall in a turn fight, it's on permanently and to use 1940's vernacular, is a bit Micky Mouse.  Also it's un-grammatical.

Ah - found the box to un check in settings - 'handling tips'.

That makes a lot of sense. Krup here was playing on our server which is in NYC which is relatively local to him but of course that doesn't change the facts that one packet may drop compared to another. Has the team got any ideas regarding how we might get damage more consistent across MP & SP?

EDIT: He informs me he pings 30 to our server.

Thanks for a solid update Jason.

We'll put out an announcement in the Combat Box discord asking for the community's help.

Wonderfully easy install. No problems with small exception : all my newly installed cockpit pinup photos seemed to have reverted to the default ones and I can't figure out why?

Happens with updates sometimes, the original files get written back over your custom photo files because they use a shared file name.  Particularly if you use Steam and perform an integrity check of your installation, it will see that the custom photo files are not original and will overwrite them with the stock pictures.  After going through this a time or two I backed up the folder they're in and set it up with the JSGME mod management utility so i can activate them or deactivate them as needed (as you should deactivate any or all mods prior to an update).  Worth taking the time to set that up.

Thanks for the response. I am aware of that command. What I'm trying to get at is, it used to be possible to have just the compass and not the rest of that instrument panel showing. I'm not interested in having the g meter or airspeed etc. clogging up the screen. I like to read the gauges and see little need for the g meter because it's self evident when pulling too hard....

Cheers,

M.

Sneaksie (developer) has a post in the thread outlining possible fixes if you have trouble. My post below is probably not comprehensive - I have only been able to get onto the forums and not able to download the patch yet (no time this week, currently on lunch break).

First, back up your Data folder at the least from your game files. Some people have had their keymapping reset to default or lost their cockpit photos. If you can back up the whole game folder, that might not be a bad idea.

Set all your graphics cards settings to default/application controlled in the control panel. You can keep track of your old settings but they are unlikely to give the same effect now that the rendering is so different. This way you will know also if any issues are caused by the graphics card processing itself or an issue with the game

Reshade and graphical mods may cause issues. Most of the graphical mods are likely going to be broken by this release. Its recommended that if you have issues after installing, remove Reshade and any mods for the time being. Launch in Mods Off mode.

Radeon cards appear to have graphical glitches and artifacting issues but they are not universal. I have seen someone with a 5700XT having no issues, while others with 570 or 580s do. Devs are working on a fix and gathering data from the community. Because of work from home they weren't able to test on Radeon hardware as thoroughly as they wanted to. Since you have a Radeon card there is a good chance you will see some of these issues. If you are planning on downloading the update now and not waiting for a hotfix, it would be very useful for you to report your experience in the technical issues thread here:

The new types of AA (FXAA) increases performance but looks slightly less smooth than MSAA, if you are having performance problems switch to FXAA. According to Han FXAA + Sharpen in the graphics settings should help with spotting aircraft against the ground. If you are getting artifacting try to switch AA types or go to no AA.

If you have a lower end card turn 4K textures off, since more planes have 4K skins now since this update, some graphics cards may struggle to load these textures if they have less than 4GB of memory (according to Geronimo over on his 3000 steps thread in the Manuals section - look at recent posts there for a good summary of things to try for best looking game and best spotting -

).

Unfortunately there is a lot of information spread across multiple threads right now. We will almost certainly see hotfixes in the next couple days. Hopefully the Radeon issues get sorted as quickly as possible.

Thanks Red Kestrel very useful summary ..... I think I will wait a bit longer for the hotfixes to land in that case .... BTW can you be any more specific in exactly which folders I should back up for keymapping etc ?, is it the entire IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad folder ? .... I dont want to wipe out the new release if / when i copy things back if you get me ?

Mmh, I did some tests with cockpit reflection set to normal and high - both do the same and to me, they are static.

F.ex. if you get into the YAK9 or LA5FN (both have a thick armored glass behind the head of the pilot) you can see

the reflection of the cockpit, the stick and even the pedals - move them and you won't see any motion of the reflection,

they are static.

But finally, that's absolutely OK for me. Looks good as is - we don't need to push it too far, do we?

Cheerio

The only think that is odd about the reflections for me is they are overly bright while below an overcast sky because they are set for full sun. Not a game breaker but it took a minute to get used to that.

The "data" folder inside your main game folder.  Actually just the "input" folder inside the 'data' folder.  That is where your keybinds and HOTAS settings are found.

Bit of feedback on the rendering approach.  Flew a QMB mission to see how reflections were with a low sun as I had always struggled with these.  Good news is they appear much more realistic and spotting appears much easier than before, especially when the sun is low.

However, I was getting some very odd rendering of the small lakes to the north of Anapa on the Kuban spring map (6:30am).

I think that the inputs folder is for your keybinds and HOTAS but your Data folder has other things like your career mode progress and graphics presets. Don't have the game files in front of me at the moment so can't be sure.

Bug or feature?

I hear the impacts on the enemy plane from 0 to 150m when flying the i-16 seems very unreal.

Tested also with the Yak1b with the cockpit open and this does not happen.

Steps to reproduce:

1º Select i16 to fly.

2º Stay very close to the foe and shoot. You will hear as you are the one being shot.

Im running on an older MSI laptop w. Nvidia GTX960M. This update improved my performance it seems and looks better too! I can get 40+ fps now (was 30-35 before).Worked perfect after install - no settings changes needed. I have 8x AA turned on in Nvidia control panel. Couldnt get the in game AA to work right on my machine before. Maybe I should try again and see if it improves more. Settings below. Maybe this helps someone else with an older laptop?

Update - I turned all the Nvidia contol panel AA related settings to application controlled and use 4X in game now. Works even a bit better! Lines seem bit smoother too (even though I had 8x in nvidia control panel before... hmmm). I was able to bump horizons out to 70km (was 40km) now as well without any real noticeable performance hit...

Clouds look fantastic even with my older GPU! I assume this new shading technique affects the clouds?

I'm very impressed with this update, and excited to try the new P-38 missions!!

Great work guys!!!

I believe I noticed this last night in FC QM too.  Was in VR headset and the impacts on the enemy a/c sounded like they were actually in my cockpit.

Much more important though - this has been a WONDERFUL update for my VR performance.  Thank you team!!

I agree with the importance of the update, just the first test I did I realized this behaviour and for me it was weird enough to report it

Wonderful graphics now, looks almost like a new game, thx!

Two small points:

- Please, give us the possibility to switch off the techno chat messages even if the server allows them

- all planes look like I16s against clouds from some distance now :)

Thanks Therion,

I believe that the 'instrument panel' toggle  is the main suspect for my troubles. I have managed to remove the air speed and gun info. somehow...but I guess the g-meter is locked to the compass now. :( I guess it's time for me to stop relying on that gamey compass crutch and be a man. ;)

Hi there,

I have a radeon and experience flickering shadows/artifacts on the ground. The Flickering seems to start below 250m. Above that height the picture looks good.

Current System is a Radeon RX470 4GB + Ryzen 5 1500X + 16GB DDR4-2400. But overall performance seems to be better than before the update.

Quick Edit: Radeon Driver is the newest one 20.4.2

For all those people posting that they can't get tech chat to display / hide; the option has been moved to the realism settings as "Info feed". There's also an option to display / hide the aircraft handling tips in the chat area on the left with a "Handling tips" option.

Thanks for that.  It works so far.

LOL, for me they all look like Fokker Dr1's, but I guess we mean the same :)

It definitely helps spotting; identifying not so much.... But I do like the overall graphic improvements.

Good stuff. The advice from Jason in past has been to set the anti-aliasing to Application Controlled for best results. Same for Anisotropic Filtering.

One thing I did notice in the nVidia settings you posted was: Antialiasing Transparency:  8x Supersample.

This will be crippling for your graphics card I would think (and most others too)  - even using 2x Supersample was problematic for me in the past. I strongly recommend you change that to Multisample. Will give much better performance and still look good.

Another excellent update by the devs. Thank you very much. I’m still exploring all it offers so more to discover for sure but I’ve noticed a satisfying thump and other sounds effects when my rounds hit the cockpit and engine area of a target aircraft in Flying Circus. Wings do come off but only after the real damage is done by the look of it. I expect some satisfied FS flyers as a result of this update. I’m using a Valve Index and still exploring the various settings for that but a noticeable performance improvement for VR for me.

The Yak-9 and 9T look great. I’ll be in those next.

That's been there.  Point blank shooting an enemy plane usually results in a hearty "thwack!" sound when you hit them. :)

-------

Nvdia 1660Ti 6gb card: running nearly maxed out on everything except mirrors and grass and no performance loss at all.  Awesome!

The rest of my machine is in the range where mid-range and lower-teir high range meet.

Solo flight over Antwerp rooftops on the Rhineland Summer map only resulted in occasional 1 or 2 frame hangs that last about 1 millisecond.  Frequency of hangs: Random. No more than 1 every few minutes.

Yak 9 and 9T:  The only problem I'll have with these planes is getting lulled into feeling that I can do no wrong when flying them.  Hence, everything going good, pushing too hard.... and... splat.  lol

The sound the 37mm makes when exploding a ground artillery position is incredibly satisfying.  Some real sub-bass whoomp-age there!

Enemy spotting in 1v1 QMB is improved.  I can now do turns onto the enemy that require a few seconds of not seeing him, then re-acquiring him visually right where I expect him to be.

Granted, there are times where the opponent plane still 'blends' into the background but, I would guess that it's a lot closer to the way real camouflage and using the environment to disrupt visual tracking works.

Excellent job guys!     ~S~

Oh!  And the canopy reflections are really good!   It seems to provide a sense of depth to the entire environment.

Also, the canopy scratches no longer scream "Hey, Rookie!  This is what you get when you take off on a dirt runway directly in your leader's prop wash!"

My strong advice would be "undo any weird settings some random guy on the internet told you to use" and get back to vanilla IL2, then change one thing at a time. I see loads of advice on the forum of doing weird stuff with NVidia and AMD control panels, none of which is backed up with actual benchmarking data, and I'm not surprised to hear people have gotten into a mess.

The game runs really nicely for me, the only control panel override I have in place is "prefer maximum performance".
