"LULLABY FOR A DREAM" - Scripted Campaign for the P-51D

Hi Tip,

 

On Mission 5 I pulled into the re-arming re-fueling area next to the wooden tower (it was easy to find) and got the message to re-arm and join Neptune on an attack in Sector 1922.  But with my engine stopped, I couldn't re-arm or re-fuel.  So I decided to re-start my engine and pull back into the service area to see if that would work, but my engine wouldn't re-start either.  I was dead in the water and failed the mission.  Have you run into anything like that before?  I was luckily undamaged at the time with 3 kills, so it didn't make sense.  Thanks!

Hmm... First off congrats on the 3 kills.

1) That you received the order to join in on the Sector 1922 but were unable to RRR theoretically could happen if you continued to roll out of the RRR area after entering it. Although you would of seen that you were in and then out of the RRR zone due to the technical HUDs.

 

2) As far as not being able to restart. No, haven't ever had that problem.

 

3) What version of the Campaign are you using? I went in and changed the latest available version above in the OP after the new cloud update for Mission 5 to be accomplished by take-off and successfully landing or crash landing for that matter at Asch. Which you certainly achieved.

 

Attempting to recreate your issues. Played updated Mission 5 this morning without problems.

Ok, Tip...I didn't know about your updated version, so I'll download it and try again!  Can I replace the campaign and still keep my progress in the first 4 missions, or do I have to start over at mission 1?

Campaign progress can get lost if the file  ..... \Sturmovik Great Battles\data\swf\il2\usersave gets lost, happened to me twice by overwriting due a fresh game download. One of those main file to backup first when you need to reinstall the lot again.

 

Tip, did you do your skins? I could use some help with the anti glare zone on this one:

Nope, not a clue on skinning. 

Links to Pips skin packs are in the OP, the read-me and the skins themselves are directly downloaded into the players game when they install the Campaign.

After lots more experience with Tip's missions and refueling, I think my initial problem was that the 190's took out the refueling truck at Le Culot. 

 

Question: are there enough optional sorties available from St. Trond airfield to still complete the first mission if the refueling truck get's bombed at Le Culot?

 

I'm replaying this campaign again now that I have a better handle on the Mustang.

Sorry for the delay in addressing your post Spidey. Hopefully you're not still stuck. I've never had that rearming vehicle engaged or destroyed. But yes, you should be able to continue using St. Trond in that event.

I'm in the process of streamlining with an eye toward performance and greater immersion most if not all of the missions. After several game updates, resaves and what-nots, sometimes things get cattywonkus.  It's time for a full looksee.

I finished the extra mission at St. Trond. When I flew back to Le Culot at the end, the refueling truck was back (but I was out of time and ended the mission there). But I was able to move on.

Campaign has been fully updated with an eye to improving performance without sacrificing immersion. 

Download, extract and allow overwrite. Will not reset your progress.

Thanx so much for this masterpiece of a campaign.

Best SP experienced in VR so far !

I’m on mission 4 right now and i’ve enjoyed every second in the P51 !

Can these missions be playable in coop mode?

@CCG_Pips Great Skinpack, definitely my preferred Mustang skins !

I know.  What an excellent P-51D pack that Pips made. Without a doubt it certainly gave me some inspiration to create the campaign in the first place. 

 

Appreciate the kudus and thanks for the post. As I don’t have VR, that makes me glad to know that the missions are running well enough to use it without problems.

 

As for coops I streamlined and reworked two of the missions (no’s 2 and 5) into Teamplay CoOPs to be playable within the Multiplayer Forum under Tips Multiplayer, Dogfight and CoOPs in the Original Post.

No respawns for you. CoOPs are manageable with regard to randomized sorties. Just bring it back with enough parts and taxi to the RRR area. ?

Dogfight would need to gut a lot and require different logic to recognize players. No go.

I getcha. Early on, when we didn't have as much skill, my buddy or I would die in a coop mission, and then have to wait for the other to carry out the mission on their own--or we'd have to restart.

 

I wonder how well we'd fair now...

I just finished this campaign and loved it. Worked perfectly with current version of the game and everything looks gorgeous. I love how the airfield is really busy and the frontlines are populated. Specially the targets like the artillery positions, whith ammo dumps, camo nets and vehicles around, not just a bunch of cannons in a field.

@[DBS]Tx_Tip  This is one of my favorite scripted campaigns, and I just decided to play it again but I found that LAD04 went off the rails.  The lead (Neptune 5) got distracted, first by peeling off to obsess over strafing and bombing a Candy group involving an infantry skirmish just north of Geleen (the flight expends all their ordinance there and never makes it to Duren).  Heading on to the target at Duren by myself, destroying a number of targets in the assigned area, and returning to Asch resulted in a failed mission. 

I opened up the  LAD 04 in the editor to see what the problem could be.  I first tried to delete the Candy skirmish group north of Geleen.  When I flew the mission again, we passed Geleen (yes!), but then Neptune 5 got distracted again and decided to head south just past Heerlen and attack the airfield a Aachen (drat!).   As before, heading to Duren by myself, attacking targets, and returning to base did not bring success (not surprising since Neptune 5 triggers most of the critical events in the target area).   Back to the mission editor and I noticed that the priority for waypoint 5 was "low".    The good news is, changing it to "Medium" seems to have done the job.   Neptune 5 leads us all the way to Duren whereupon the group engages targets in the area, we got several new target assignments, and the Luftwaffe made an appearance (just as I remembered from prior attempts).   A very satisfying mission, I must say.  

Anyway, I'm guessing tweaks to the AI behavior since you originally created the mission may have resulted in the increased distractibility of our fearless leader.   Honestly I don't know how he would have seen a few German infantry in a wood line several miles north of our flightpath, much less why he would have thought it needed our undivided attention, but there you have it.   LAD 01-03 worked without issue.  I let you know if I notice anything else in the remaining 3 missions.   Thanks again for this great campaign.

@[DBS]Tx_Tip  I'm going to have to take all that back because though I was sure I had the latest version of the campaign, I didn't! [queue Homer Simpson exclaiming Doh!]  Updated and checked the mission out and it looks like you addressed this issue already.  Flew the updated mission and it works perfectly.   Sorry about the false alarm!

No Worries. Glad you are enjoying the campaign. Fly it myself.

FYI all, with the new BoX update coming up. Will take a looksee to check if anything has come undone.

One of these days I might just change the secondary and/or tertiary sorties just to keep y'all on your toes.

Here's some of the major changes:

01) As an entirely new mission has been added to the Campaign. All Players 'must' either Delete current version or Re-Start the Campaign anew for it to work after download.
 
02) Players may still simply <click> the Auto button and let the AI take control once mission either begins or after take-off if they so desire.
*Be advised though that Mission No's 02, 03 and 07 have been redone with respects to the Player no longer being attached to the Group, Flight or Element Leader designated using Auto. While Player may use Auto if desired. Using Auto-Level if needed to continuously fly aircraft in tandem with their Group which may prove to be the better option. Additionally on Missions 00 and 06 the Player will lead an Element.

 

03) Most Main Sorties, many Secondary as well as Tertiary sorties within the Campaign have logic, target objectives, enemy encounters and visual enhancements changed in one way or another.

 

04) Entirely New Secondary sorties added to several missions.

 

05) PatCartiers P51B-5 Yoxford Boys Skin Pack makes for a great addition alongside CCG_Pips 356th FG P-51D skins.

 

06) As I am now having more difficulty in viewing aircraft and ground targets, all aircraft now have different naming to aid in folks who may use default Icons.

I'm reflying the redux version and I'm enjoying a lot. Missions can be really long if the player wants it and rearms many times. In most missions I have detected some flying fires, soviet fuel trucks that should be USA/British and some ground objectives that say that you recieve penalty for attacking an allied (probably some neutral object). I'll try to give more detailed information. I think It would be nice too to know the day and hour of the mission on the description. It helps if you want to use the Rheinland map mods.

You have flying fires in most missions?

If you are using Rheinland map mods that could be the culprit. Anything that changes any altitude within the map would cause this.

 

The only Rhineland Map Mods I ever used when flying and testing this were the R_Winter Early, R_Winter_Late and I believe the R_Summer Late ones. No floating fires encountered on primary or secondary sorties.

 

I'd need more info for what and where to check on this.

Could be the cause. I used this same mods. I think the it was in mission LAD 01. I still havent been able to look at it at home, but i did som screenshots.

Ok, Now I'm testing without mods.

LAD 1, 2 & 3 (probably in all missions): soviet trucks in rearm and repair zone in St. Trond.
LAD 3: Objective blocking road and railway in Aachen and friendly fire message given when attacked (happens in other objectives too)

Had a target link dropped within one of the secondary sorties in Mission 02 resulting in its' failure. Could be with overwriting it or the upload or download. Don't know but annoying and not the first time, thankfully a very rare instance, I've with had links dropped during overwriting within the games software. Anyway here is a redone version with some changes such as having the mission month date in the briefing.

To Install for Campaign Play:
1)    *Download the "Lullaby for a Dream-Redux II" Zip and before extracting (See #2 below) the enclosed "data" folder to your C:\IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad folder or wherever/however you have your pc set up to play BoX.

 

2) As an entirely new mission has been added to the Campaign. All Players with earlier versions 'must' Delete earlier version for it to work without possible issues before extracting the Redux II Version.
 
6) Please review the Enclosed ReadMe for other pertinent details.

Mission LAD 4

Allied trucks in the east of Duren. It's suposed to be a German objective. Some other objects are allied or neutral too and marks firendly fire when you attack the tanks.

Sorry no allied or neutral units in the Truck Convoy objective. Perhaps your bombing, strafing eye-candy encampments outside of town instead of the objective. Guess it's possible I missed something within them. Certainly nothing to do with the objectives, logic or immersion as they blow up and make explosions just like everything else that's going up around you in the mission. 


As for the Tank objectives on the road, the tank encampment camp and all other adjacent objects. Nothing but axis entities. No idea what you're bombing. Don't bomb the city.

Mmm... Strange, because it was a direct impact with a bomb on a panzer IV and recieved the message.  And the east encampment of Duren was of US troops for sure. Perhaps because of the line of the front more to the west the encampment of US troops in the east of the town looked strange for me. ?

No worries. Without your first post I wouldn't have found that target link drop.

Some things within the game due get skewed with an error that I made/missed and possibly noted but forgot to remedy. Lots of moving parts going on. Or more importantly go bellies up with the overwrite, upload or download of the campaign such as when the Target Link was dropped. Torpedoing a mission sortie resulting in a new complete Redux II being created.

 

While I can look at what you've posted within the ME to see what's what. I took my own advice and deleted the older version, downloaded Redux II and enjoying "Dream" from anew. As many of the main, secondary and tertiary sorties have been changed or are completely new.

Penetration Escort

Didn't climb with the flight. Causing a tardy rendezvous with the bomber stream. Bad decision.

Returned to rally point and RTB to base.

 

Re-Armed, Repaired for Armour Attack with Group C. 

Things went awry. Needed the emergency base at St. Trond.

 

Re-Armed, Repaired at St. Trond to support "Ripper" Attack.

No description would do justice.

 

Flew well in this one.

I keep running into a weird issue with mission 0.

 

When I land to rearm and refuel at St Trond, my game “freezes” when I refuel. 
the weird thing is, the game doesn’t freeze—I just lose all control of the game. Suddenly, no inputs work. Time still passes around me. Other planes land. Artillery still fires. But I’m stuck. 
 

Happened twice. 
 

But only on this mission. And only when I refuel. 
 

Refuel works here in other missions, just not this one. 
 

Was able to pass the mission and move on eventually (flew another mission where I survived, but didn’t get to refuel), but never complete all the objectives and land at Le Culot.

I'll revisit this to see if I can duplicate the refuel issue in mission 00 Spidey002. 

 

In the meantime. After a long refreshing brake from the game and finding the latest update I fired up Lullaby to see if all these head-ons and general angst about this and that had torpedoed anything.

Nope.

 

Here's my AAR from 02 - LAD 2 "Lullaby for Dream"

 

Armed Fighter Sweep

All flights went in magnificently. No AI shenanigans in the demanding bruhaha.

My rustiness showed and limped to the emergency base at St.Trond with some serious damage. 

 

Re-Armed, Repaired flew sortie to support "Bullring".  

RTB'd to Home at Le Culot.

 

Re-Armed, Repaired for one of the new sorties that I had forgotten was in this mission.

Good to go.

 

Flying Redux II as a rookie and enjoying "Dream" from anew.
