Wanganui_Wildcat Posted April 11, 2020 Posted April 11, 2020 As the title says, is it possible? To be more specific, change the outside appearance while keeping the handling and everything else the same? Basically put a different 3d model in the place of an existing one? If it is possible, is there a how to guide for dummies?
HappyHaddock Posted April 11, 2020 Posted April 11, 2020 Plenty of folk will simply tell you this is impossible, and if you are asking if there is a "dummies" guide on how to do this then you may be best of just accepting that this isn't possible.... however little in life is actually impossible where much comes down to stubborn determination, hard work and a lot of lateral thinking! 1

I realise you would need a new 3d model so that is a good start, but once you have that (found the odd free one) i'm not sure where to go next. I'm sure there are websites and tutorials that could point me in the right direction but I'm not even sure what to google. So any rough direction pointers would be great.

Best bet is to assume that if starting from scratch that if you do ever get proficient enough to actually deal with all the obstacles that make this difficult the likelihood is that the goal posts will have moved entirely by then anyway. Apologies for what is an entirely facetious reply, but the following does sum up what you are asking about, so if you want to start with something simpler try hacking the federal reserve... I'll let others chip in with more serious suggestions about what they consider simpler starting points to learn the basics of modding, my own skills are pretty limited in general but well honed in the narrow areas I've chosen to pursue. rowdyb00t Posted April 11, 2020 Posted April 11, 2020 @Wanganui_Wildcat You wouldn’t happen to be pondering about making Zero‘s, Kate’s, Oscar’s, Betty’s, Wildcats, Hellcats, Corsairs, Avengers, Dauntless, and palm trees?? 1
Avimimus Posted April 11, 2020 Posted April 11, 2020 If you build up the skills there may be a team like Team Fusion (Il-2 Cliffs of Dover) that could accept your help on a few carefully chosen projects - but this engine is unlikely to be opened for that kind of modding. 1
Missionbug Posted April 11, 2020 Posted April 11, 2020 The sim is locked to all intents and purposes to the sort of activity you are asking about, maybe in time someone might find a way but for now you will have to make do with skin changes to try and reproduce different aircraft types as we all did in the original IL-2. When it was announced there would be a mods on option it was thought there would be a opportunity to at least add objects as in R.O.F. because this is essentially the same game engine, however, those who managed to add objects to R.O.F. have not yet been able to add them into the GB series so for now it would seem only texture work is possible. I suppose the only way at the moment to have any kind of 3d work added is if you produce a model that is up to the standard of the sim and present it to the development team, if they are happy with it maybe they would do the necessary work to integrate your model. Take care and be safe. Wishing you all the very best, Pete. 1
LizLemon Posted April 11, 2020 Posted April 11, 2020 Swapping mgm files is trivial. You can drive a car around instead of a tank, for example; However there is no 3d model importer available so you can't import anything into the game. 1
Wanganui_Wildcat Posted April 11, 2020 Author Posted April 11, 2020 Thanks for all the replies folks, seems like I will have to stick to skinning for now. @rowdyb00t Guilty, I was thinking of trying to swap out the I-16 for a Zero and possibly one or two of the ship models as well, got a bit of an obsession with that PTO. 2
