AI question .... do they eat a lot of carrots? ?

First off let me say that Im really impressed with the progress being made with the AI behaviour ... so much better than it was last time I played the game regularly. How ever I was watching some YouTube vids of folks playing online and I noticed something that I dont believe Ive ever seen in single player (so far). Sometimes people get shot down simply because they dont see their attacker coming. Every time I approach an enemy AI they see me a long way off 100 percent of the time regardless of what angle, height or speed I approach them at. It would be really good to get the occasional "sitting duck" like you see in online games ... it would seem more "human" to make mistakes occasionally like this and give a nice sense of achievement to be successful in a stealth attack now and then.

It certainly would be nice.  The player’s pilot seems to have a similar advantage, as I often hear him repeatedly saying he is engaging a target 10km away when I’m in the middle of doing something else.  Gunners on the the other hand seem blind to the world outside and sit on their little folding chair until the enemy is right upon them.

Broken spotting is a known Issue/Bug/"feature" in the game. it's routine to not have planes drawn at 1K away or be so small it's like 2-3 pixels unless you fly zoomed all the way in the the FOV the size of a coffee mug.

This is precisely one of my most "please devs do it!" things. I hate not being able to stealth against AI. It destroys any chances of becoming a true Hartmann (lol).

AI will always see you when inside their "bubble". They see thru clouds, terrain, planes, buildings. Nothing blocks their vision. AI shoots at player and does not matter if there are buildings, terrain, trees, friendlies etc. in the way. Only the player entity matters. In short: once inside AI bubble you are 100% visible to it.

FYI the AI has blind zones as proven and discussed here (roll down for the next 15-20 comments):

You can extract the .gtp files and open the novice-ace files with notepad to read them yourself.  The ignore distance is set by skill level alone and does not factor in anything like sun, blind zones or angle of attack.

@sniperton Try AA. Once inside their bubble they will shoot at you even you go "out of sight" by going lower than tree tops, behind buildings, terrain etc. and still having a perfect knowledge where you are, attitude etc. And they also keep firing thru anything in their way, be it own airfield structures, player planes and whatnot. Those things simply do not exist to the AI. You might be able to sneak on an AI fighter, but once it has spotted you, you can not escape it. It has "spotted & locked" you, just like the AA AI. Drive a tank and AI shoots you from quite far away, thru forest with immaculate accuracy, even it should not even "see" you due obstacles.

The AA AI could use a piece of code "losing track after X time if LOS lost". This would require it to actually have a proper LOS routine implemented. Also it would require the AI to stop shooting if there is something between you and the firing AI entity, like a building or forest. Devs have improved the fighting abilities of the AI planes, but the stupendous all seeing Laser/radar tracking gunnery AI is still there. And it does not suffer from barrels overheating etc. either. So could use some work.

That's all true, guys, I didn't say there's nothing more to do here, on the contrary. I too am very much annoyed when the side gunner of a shot-down bomber snipes me through the thick smoke with a perfect 90 degree deflection shot.

I just wanted to point out that according to my test experiences the AI flyer does have blind spots, and those do depend on the aircraft's geometry. Furthermore, very much depends on the priority level of the AI's waypoints (set by the mission designer). If the waypoint priority is set high enough, the AI doesn't evade you until your first rounds impact.

:salute:

This, together with  this, are the main reasons why SP is actually unplayable at the moment. In all modules. An new normandy module will not change that. :(

Totally with you on this. Actually, I’ve been playing more Cliffs because it feel so much more realistic… The sense of flying, the photo realistic graphics and far superior AI. With Cliffs I actually feel like I’m fighting a person, not a super human AI bot that can out fly me no matter what planes we’re in and where bomber gunners shoot me down from 2 miles out. I have to fly with invulnerable checked which does not do much to promote realism. There are some inherent flaw’s with my L2 that I believe will never go away, the overly twitchy flight controls and poor AI I believe are here to stay. They can add as many planes and maps as they want but I guess it’s too hard / too expensive to fix some of the fundamental issues with the game ... overly twitchy flight controls and poor ai simulation. However, I will keep supporting until someone else comes out with a better product. I am really hoping Microsoft gets back into the combat flight Sim business!

I would love for the AI to have the ability to lose a player, the constant turn battles are frustrating with AI and actually make it more difficult/annoying than playing against real players.

Its impossible to catch AI by surprise, something which happens very often online. It should depend on AI level and number of friendlies in the area.

Been thinking I should try COD out of interest .... whats are the main pros and cons for a "casual"  SP combat sim player Im not a great fan of coplex engine management etc

I am a casual SP player and that is why I find IL-2 so frustrating. Like my post said, I think the graphics are far superior, the AI is better.
FMs are better and DMs are way better!!! The sense of flight is more immersive the water looks amazing. The cons are it’s an older game and feels a some interfaces feel bit dated. Also, no VR support. If I had 10 minutes to fly either in SP mode I would pick Cliffs

Honestly, both games have a lot to offer and both are owned by Jason and company so it’s all good

They do not see through clouds. It's been that way since ROF for ages now.

@LukeFF With all respect, they shoot you even fully engulfed by clouds. Seen this many times online when attacking targets and evading into clouds.

Way back when the newer style of clouds were introduced, the AI regained the ability to see and shoot you in full cloud.

I thought the 'invisible planes' issue happens with all the planes? I'm not sure tho, I don't play MP usually

Happens with other planes too than the 109. Fw190, Bf110, P51D..all of them.
