Finally bought Flying circus and wow!

Question... I already have the early version called "Rise of Flight" then IC Studios bought them, so before I spend my money, besides the addition of VR, ... are there any other major improvements? Thanks.

It's a matter of personal opinion.  The damage model is generally considered a big improvememt as are the AI abilities, to name a few.  The FC community is growing and thriving...the father of FC not so much although it offers more ready made solo campaign experience although even FC has some options in that regard.

You may find the following helpful in making a determination.   Also watch some of the FC videos around.

G-effects are a major game changer, damage model is better, most planes use pre-2014 FMs so FC Camels are faster and Albies are slower, ground targets DM is more realistic, multiplayer is alive.

I was lurking on this thread for a while, but now that I've played FC for the first time, I can say that it is worth the actual (50% sales!) price if you're into MP.
Despite everything good that everyone is talking about (DM, FM, G-effects, etc), there are at least 2 things that I didn't like so much:

a) engine sounds are a bit "off". To me, they sound too modern, something like a muffled Cessna.

b) it would be really nice if we could adjust the joystick curves like in RoF (per plane)

Of course, these 2 aren't game breakers and I can live without. In the end, I'm glad I finally bought the game. Can see a lot of MP hours ahead.

Welcome, Joker.  It was good winging with you in today's mission.

How are the servers at different times of the day? It looks like Thursday nights are the way to go, but unfortunately me living in New Zealand means I will only ever be able to catch the very tail end of that action. And Saturday nights are a no go for me as well... Surely there's enough aussie/kiwi flyers so that we can organise times for our own liking?? I'm getting sick of always adjusting my schedule for all you Americans lol :)

We've got a guy with us from Australia too. Start using this to check for folks on. We're starting to see steady numbers on the "off" nights/days. For instance, 7 folks on right now.

Yeah Baeumer, same from me, let's repeat! Too bad that our "A-10s" weren't a tad bit faster, lol. ?

Am I seeing that right? 79 people were on for that mission? I think the most I've ever seen on RoF was something 40, but generally it's around the 5-10 mark.

Not sure what you are referring to, perhaps the barans site display at some point today, but there were 75 pilots flying at once with more in the waiting room earlier today and 138 pilots entering the Flugpark during a three hour mission.  More encouraging than this is that there is fairly solid flying activity ongoing now particularly from about 1900 GMT and later throughout more days of the week. Additionally, we are meeting more and more WWII pilots who are really enjoying the nuance and pace of the WWI knife fight over the Front and two seater action (and hunting) behind the lines.

The half price also must've brought a few more chaps over. I don't want to start anything up, but it really seems like lowering the price permanently would be very beneficial. Unless they have some genius marketing scheme I wouldn't know ...

I’m trying to convince myself that the 50% off sale is an opening move to get more bums on seats before making the case to 1c Games for FC volume 2.

This on first of all, really a strong changer for a WW1 sim.

For my opinion is also very good the map, textures does not feel anymore "painted" but realistic, as for the clouds.

It does worth the money also for a RoF howner.

Yes. I very much hope for that as well!

Yup, I think you just convinced me to finally get it.

I hope I don't regret this lol

For $ 39.99 is a MUST to have.

Cockpits and 3D models have been improved too, and the new pilots are stunning.

I'm really very happy with this one, and 4k skins does help to make it even better.

I'm not running VR, and it seems like that is the main attraction with this game. But my trusty DIY head tracking should suffice.

See you in the skys...

(it does always hurt to see $60 empty out of my account, no matter what its for :))

Ah, NZ's Keith 'Grid' Caldwell SE5a! My fave if I have to fly that plane.

One thing I discovered, is that IC Great Battles and Flying Circus are really designed for VR. I use a Samsung Odyssey myself. SOOooooo ... anyone without a VR headset..GET ONE!! You're missing out on 90% of the fun.

I have a Samsung Odyssey as well and I agree with your assessment, even though I've stopped using mine for IL-2 and it's now part of our living room VR computer, mostly for my wife to play Beat Saber with.

VR is totes amazeballs, however for this game you need an extremely beefy machine if you don't want to stare at pixels or a blurry mess. Longer playsessions get uncomfortable and no matter what some other people claim: VR doesn't help with my situational awareness, and it makes using chat and map tools for navigation purposes (protractor etc.) all but impossible. You can use some camera hacks mods to improve your zoom, and the nature of VR also means that you can clip through your plane and see through it, though I'd be hard-pressed to call any of this a cheat compared to the convenience of TrackIR. The good news is that I expect VR to exceed TrackIR + multiple 2D screens in every way within the next five years or so, but it will not be with this game. It needs to be for a flightsim built from the ground up as VR-only.

Views on VR are definitely subjective to say the least and here's my alternative view ;) ......

IMHO, IL2 is at the moment is the best combat flight sim for VR as in it runs the smoothest ...My experience is with DCS, IL2 and X-plane.

I have yet to clip through my plane and see through it ...I'll try again tonight but so far I haven't experienced that. I'm almost always in server that lock you in cockpit so maybe that has something to do with that.

Not being able to use chat for random quick messages and map tools for navigation purposes (protractor etc.) is a draw back for sure.

I often play for 6 hours at time and never feel uncomfortable.

I setup chat macros with Voice Attack for basic public and team chat messages and it works well.....

I Also agree you need a pretty good setup, high 4's-5ghz CPU and at least a 1080 -1080Ti......

I had a Lenovo as well as a OG Odyssey till' I upgraded to a Reverb but as long as you have a Rift S ,Reverb or newer higher res headset it's far from a blurry mess or pixelated and I'm generally 60-90 frames SP or MP.

With these two mods my SA has gotten close to if not up to my Trackir SA ...I often spot cons first in my flight ... I use the rotation angle mod in DCS as well and what a difference.

It takes a little work to set these up but once you do it's a game changer and now I can never go back. and the more I fly the better it gets.

To bind these two mods to my stick I use Joytokey It's a free program

How to add rotation angle to check your six in VR

This allows me to be able to see behind me. You can set it from 45-90 Degrees  I set it to 90 to have the same feature that I had with TrackIR, but that's personal taste

Lefuneste's 3DMigoto mod

This mod allows you to remove the prop disc, make the gunsight more visible, add increased zoom capability.

Keybindings are a little challenging to set up on the joystick so I recommend using JoyToKey  to setup your controls for zoom.

I cannot say this enough, get this mod. You can play online with it just fine.

Thanks for your different perspective! I definitely agree that IL-2 is the best VR flightsim on the market right now, having also tried DCS and X-Plane and not liking it very much.

Let's just say that I'm quite envious of your top-of-the-line rig (i7 9700K @ 5.0, 32GB DDR4, GTX 1080 Ti) and top-of-the-line VR headset (Reverb Pro). Compare this to my now ageing system (i7 7700K @ 4.2, 32GB DDR4, GTX 1080 non-Ti) and mid-range VR headset (Odyssey+), and I think it becomes clear why we have different experiences. Like I said: I can choose between pixelation and a clear picture, or a blurry mess where I can't spot a plane more than 500 meters away, even if I must say that the Odyssey+ is very good at preventing screen door effect. It works beautifully well on my downstairs living room system with comparable specs but slightly weaker GPU (i5 7600K, 16GB DDR4, GTX 1660 Ti) which I built specifically for VR-only games. Actually, in that respect I find some slightly more "artistic" low-poly (space) flight games such as House of the Dying Sun and Elite Dangerous to be better experiences overall, even if they're not strictly VR-only.

When it comes to IL-2, I found it a lot of fiddling about: having to mod/hack SteamVR to enable motion reprojection for WMR and get smooth 45fps (doubled to 90), then installing those camera mod/hacks to be able to zoom and remove the prop disc. To add insult to injury: when in VR the loading screen flashes so bad it would be prone to give you a seizure. It's just not a streamlined experience. Yet.

That said, in single player: I'm floored. The sheer joy and feeling of flight is worth the price of entry alone. It definitely took me some willpower to go back to TrackIR, not so much because of the immersive experience, but because you lose depth perception going back to 2D. I think nowadays the "best of both worlds" would be to have a 3D monitor and glasses with TrackIR, but I'm not sure if those things are even compatible and still being made.

It's Nvidia 3D vision I use to use it because high res and 3d depth,  image was not so bright as in 2d.  New monitors do not support it today , there were second generation but it's stopped there unfortunately. If you want 3d depth on 2d , simply close one eye or put some little dark giving filter in one eye :) btw 3d vision was demanding , use to use dube gpu for high frame rates. BTW my O+ is gathering dust afyer few weeks of wow , waiting for " lone echo 2", fist is  must have vr game IMHO.

Unfortunately, I hesitated to spend a mere $60 on Flying Circus... I don't think ill be able to get a VR running anytime soon lol. I only have a GTX 1060 6gb, and a ryzen 5 Cpu but it seems to run it without too much hassle.

So I finally gave it a go yesterday, and I wasn't all that impressed. That is mainly due to the fact that I very very much dislike the BoX system. Im having few problems with my head tracker... I need to properly set it up, and figure out how to fix this bug where I can't look up and down proper. It's a similar issue I had in BoS, but it looks like @J2_Bidu found a solution to that. So I need to try that out. Also, my snap views aren't saving... For some reason I had to re set them every time! I had this same issue in BoS.

It seems to run pretty good on high (not ultra) graphics with V-Sync on, and the graphics do look pretty mint! I haven't actually flown in RoF for a while, but I think it looks a little better then that.

Basically I'm just waiting untill I find time to set it all up properly, then find myself a nice server to play on. It'll be good to see all the chaps from RoF again!

Lol you can call sir. Only had 3 id's and I wanted to start a new more historical squad, one that flew entente and did objectives,  like bombing and recon, Something there's just not enough of. Theirs's enough hunting squads out there plus a squad of Bristol's can be very effective at anything it does.  Anyway this is the id I'll be using from now on.
